In history, people always consider Napoleon in two different ways. Some part of

the people think Napoleon is a demon because he did many negative things but

some people think he is a great man because he did so many things that helped

the development of the culture. In my opinion, Napoleon has much more

advantages than his disadvantages, it’s the French’s’ honour to have this great

man.

Firstly, lets talk about the Napoleon in the positive way. Napoleon has a large

impact on the feudal system in the France, Poland and Belgium. In another way,

Napoleon is the symbol of the capitalism; they invaded and colonized other

nations in order to grab the resources and the market. Before Napoleon ruled the

French, the French still in the old feudal system. But Napoleon pushed forward

the process of changing from feudal system into capitalism. In Marx’s Communist

Manifesto, the only way social can develop is to break the old relation of

production.1 Obviously, this progress must be proceeding by the form of

revolution. Even if Napoleon didn’t invade other countries, there must have some

one stand up to start up the revolution. So Napoleon invasion of other countries

speeded up the development of society. Of course, the war that Napoleon

caused still had their disadvantages, but advantages are way more important

than the disadvantages.

Secondly, another most important thing of Napoleon is the Napoleonic Code

established under Napoleon in 1804. This code has a very important impact to

European countries. However, it was the first modern legal code to be adopted

countries formed during and after the Napoleonic Wars.2 These codes forbid

privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that

government jobs go to the most qualified. It determined the basic rules of the

capitalism law, such as proprietary rights. It consolidated the achievement of the

capitalism revolution. It also against the feudal system, it has deep capitalism

symbol because it was established to fit the capitalism system. Of course,

everyone has advantages and disadvantages. Napoleon also is not exception.

He also did a lot of bad things and let citizen suffer from the wars. Napoleon

conquered the almost entire Europe, but he finished his life in a small house on a

small island. I think the main reason Napoleon failed is not because of his army.

His army is strong and faithful, but he still failed. That’s because Napoleon cared

little about the people especially in the second half period of his life. In the first

half of his life, the aim of his war is to protect the capitalism revolution. These

wars are revolutions and they were against the feudal system, but in the latter

wars. The property of the war has been changed. After Napoleon set up First

Empire of France, their aim has changed; they want to expand the land of their

country. They invaded a lot of countries and brought disaster to the native people.

Since that, the war became an Imperialist war. And this Imperialist war causes

the Wars of national liberation.3

Napoleon was still a human being. Every gigantic man in every period of time

lives in the society with the people. They must have some characters such as

talent, and they have more positive and experiences than the normal people.

Nevertheless, they always stand at the same level with the people. In the past

few years, many historians have apotheosized for Napoleon. Some people called

him "The giant of the century "," Western Emperor "," God of War. " There are

also some people called him "The Corsican monster", "The tyrant who destroy

the freedom. " Some people may think if there’s not such a man called Napoleon,

there are no later things to happen. The history will change because of it. But is

that true? If there was no Napoleon, then will French revolution happen? The

answer is yes, because it’s about the human nature and the social development.

It’s not correct to say that Napoleon caused the French revolution. Indeed, it’s the

French revolution made Napoleon success. Napoleon crowned himself Emperor

Napoleon I on 2 December 1804 at Notre Dame de Paris. Then he started to rule

to country for almost 15 years. This is not capitalism; it’s actually autocratically

democracy. Many people consider the idea that he crowned himself was due to

his great ambition. Of course, this is part of the reason, but another important

reason is that an inevitable trend. It’s necessary for capitalism to establish the

rules. At that time, capitalism is still very immature; capitalism didn’t have enough

power to stand against the feudal power. So they were eager to having a

powerful government to protect the benefits of the bourgeoisie. They decided to

let Napoleon control the economic of the country. Only autocratically democracy can help them develop the capitalism in an extremely fast speed. After capitalism

has become strong enough, they can transfer their country from feudalism into

capitalism.

In conclusion, Napoleon and his empire are important not only in French’s recent

history, but also famous in the world recent history. He defended the harvest of

the French revolution, but he also destroyed the French revolution. He is the

militarist and politician of the new capitalism. He strengthened the capitalism and

awaked the awareness of the people in Europe. However, Napoleon is the

representive of the capitalism, he has his own restriction. Success grows his

emotions of pride and ambitions; he invaded the entire world and lead to the

perdition. Overall, he has more advantages then disadvantages.
