三、阅读理解

(A)

Do you know why different animals or pests(昆虫) have their

special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to

protect themselves.

Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫), but birds cannot easily

catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours

together with the change of the colours of crops(庄稼). When

crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest (收获)time

comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have.

Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily

found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for

lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of

colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by

hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.

Have you ever found an even stranger act? A kind of fish in

the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid (液体) when it

faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散开), its enemies(敌人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived

up to now though it is not strong at all.

( )1. From the passage we learn that locusts________.

A. are small animals

B. are easily found by birds

C. are dangerous to their enemies

D. change their colours to protect themselves

( ) 2. How can pests with different colours from plants keep

out of danger?

A. They run away quickly.

B. They have the colours much like their enemies.

C. They hide themselves by day and appear at night.

D. They have to move quietly.

( ) 3. Bears and lions can keep safe because________.

A. they have the colours much like the trees

B. they move quietly

C. they like brown and grey colours

D. they live in forests

( )4. Why can the kind of fish live up to now?

A. Because it is very big and strong.

B. Because the liquid it sends out can help it escape from its

enemies.

C. Because the liquid it sends out can kill its enemies.

D. Because it swims faster than any other fish.

( ) is the best title for this passage? Change of Colours for Animals and Pests.

B. Colours of Different Animals and pests.

C. The Main Use of Colours for Animals and Pests.

D. Some Animals and Pests.

Look at the plant in the picture. It looks beautiful, right? Can

you imagine (想象) it kills?

The Venus flytrap is a kind of meat-eating plant. It grows in

very few places, like wetlands near the sea in North Carolina in

America.

The Venus flytrap is not a large plant. It grows to be only

about a foot tall. The plant has white flowers in the sprin g, but it

is the plant’s leaves that make it so interesting. The ends of the

leaves have folding parts with stiff, tiny hairs (带小硬刺的可折叠部分). These are the plant’s “traps (捕捉器)”.

What does the Venus flytrap eat? As you might guess, the

Venus flytrap eats flies(苍蝇). It also eats spiders, ants and crickets

(蟋蟀). The Venus flytrap makes most of its food with sun, air and

water, just like other plants. Living things just give it extra

nutrition (额外营养) to grow well in wetlands.

How does this plant trap and eat living things? The V enus

flytrap uses a sweet liquid (液体) to attract its food. When a fly

lands on one of the plant’s open traps, hairs on the surface

make the trap close. And when the trap closes, the fly is dinner!

If you want to have your own Venus flytrap at home, you

have to buy the plant from a special place. You

can’t take a Venus flytrap from where it grows! There are

laws about taking it out of the wild. ( )1. Where does the Venus

flytrap grow?

B. In the desert. C. In the rocks.

while avoiding (避免) unlucky numbers.

The number two is lucky. A Chine se saying goes: “Good

things come in pairs.” The number three is considered (认为…)lucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for “birth”. Six,

pronounced (发音)as “Liu” in Chinese, means “everything

goes smoothly”. Eight is considered the luckiest number b

ecause the word for eight in Chinese sound similar to the word

“fa”, which means to make a lot of money, so all businessmen

like it very much. Moreover, in some areas of China, people prefer

to pay for a telephone number with 8 in it. The number nine is lu

cky because it sounds like the word for “long life”. The rulers

in ancient China wore nine-dragon clothes.

The number four is unlucky because it sounds like the word

for “death”. It is still avoided by people today in China. People

avoid the number “four” for their telephone numbers and

addresses. Many building skip (跳过) all the floors with the

number in them including 4,14, and 24. Some high building won’t even have the floors 40-49. The number fourteen is very

unlucky because it sounds like “want to die” in Chinese.
