Betty, an extraordinary football referee, was skilled at handling troublesome players. I

wanted to make her acquaintance. On the way to her house, I saw a laundry at a street corner and

went in after hesitating for a while. The clothes there were classified into four categories: wooden,

cotton, silk and nylon. I happened to see garment. It looked shabby but its brilliant color, though

fading away, betrayed itself. I knew it was an authentic antique. I gave a whistle in amazement. I

asked the owner to sell it to me. He made some good remarks on it before he offered a price. We

bargained and finally he came to terms and I got the garment without paying too much.

When I was in college, I read a play adapted by one of my well-beloved professors. At that

time I hesitate to ask him a question because I was afraid that I might be mistaken and that he was

so upper that he would overlook such a shabby student like me. It turned out that we talked as if

extraordinary.

Last year I decided to do some volunteer work. I began to research on the Internet and

discovered Volunteer USA. Three months later I found myself on a plane to Phoenix, Arizona.

I was scared at the thought of living with loads of new people for three months. However, within

fifteen minutes of arriving, my worries had gone. Everyone was so friendly and like-minded that

it was very easy to feel at home.

I was sent to the Coronado National Forest for my first 8-day project. We had to carry everything

we needed and walk three miles to where we worked. It may not seem like a long way but in 35 ℃

heat and with a heavy pack, my legs were on fire.

My job was to build a stairway out of rock. This meant climbing up and down the side of a

mountain inhabited by mountain lions, although I should say they were only heard, never seen.

Three days later, a beautiful stairway came into being. The satisfaction of knowing that

my work will be on that mountainside for years to come is massive.

But on the last night we were caught in a thunderstorm. I woke up at midnight to find a

swimming pool in my tent. The temperature was close to freezing. I had to spend the rest of the

night trembling in the only try part of my tent.

Needless to say, I suffered a lot. But I know whatever I have to face in my life I was there and

I survived. I think I am much stronger for having taken part in the project.
