“许多”的表达法知多少

英语中有诸多表示“许多”意义的单词或短语，可归纳为以下三种情况：

1. 只接可数名词的单词或短语：several几个，数个；many许多；a good/great many很

多； a great/ large/ good number of, numbers of许多，若干；scores of许多，大量；dozens of

几十个, 很多；many a许多；a few有些，几个；quite a few不少，相当多。

Children of all ages should be outdoors several hours a day.各个年龄段的孩子每天都应户

外活动几个小时。

Many people would love to go on holidays abroad.许多人愿意到国外度假。

Nobody knows how the politician was murdered, but a good many people behind the scenes

can guess why. 谁也不知道这位政治家是怎样遇害的，但不少知道内情的人却能猜测出她遭

受杀害的其中缘由。

Quite a number of world famous paintings were on show in that exhibition.有许多的世界名

画在那次展览会上展出。

It’s reported that numbers of wildfires and typhoons might increase around the world.据报道

全球野火和台风的数量也许会增加。

Scores of experiments were done but none was a success.作了几十次实验，无一成功。

Dozens of students were injured in the terrible accident.好几十学生在那一次可怕的意外中

受伤。

He spent a few days traveling around Beijing before his exams.考试前，他绕北京游玩了几

个天。

In the past few weeks, success has ruined many a man.在过去的几周内，成功使很多人毁

灭。

Her speech brought about quite a few arguments afterward.她的演说之后引起了不少的争

论。

注意：

①这些词或短语修饰名词作主语时谓语动词绝大多数用复数形式，但many a后接只能

单数名词谓语动词用单数，the number of后接复数名词谓语动词仍用单数。

Many a student was deeply moved by Mr. Smith’s speech.许多学生深为史密斯先生的演讲

所感动。

As you can see, the number of cars on our roads keeps rising these days. 目前路上车辆的数

量在不断的增长。

②scores of, dozens of前有基数词时score, dozen不能用复数，同时去掉dozens of中的介

词，但scores of中的介词不必去掉。

She went to the shop and bought two dozen pencils.她去商店买了两打铅笔。

③a good/great many后接代词或其后名词前有these, those, 形容词性物主代词以及名词

所有格时，many后of.

Poor as he was, he buys a great many of those books.尽管他穷，他还是买了很多书。

2. 只接不可数名词的单词或短语：a little一些；much许多的；a great/ good deal of大量，

许多；a large amount of, large/great amounts of许多,大量。

Jim spent his time writing stories and earning a little money.吉姆将时间花在写作上，赚些

稿费。

So much homework did we have to do that we had no time to take a rest.有要作太多的家庭

作业，我们没时间休息。

It needed a good deal of effort to persuade Joe to give up smoking.说服乔治放弃吸烟颇用

了些努力。

One of the main disadvantages of this system is that it uses a very large amount of fuel.该系

统的主要劣势之一是消耗大量燃料。

注意：

①这些词或短语修饰名词作主语时谓语动词用第三人称单数形式，但large great amounts

of要用复数。

Large amounts of money are spent on advertisements every year.每年都要花费大量金钱在

广告上。

②Much还可用作副词或代词，“非常”或“许多”。

Much as we would like to stay, we really must go home.我们倒是很愿意呆在这儿，可确实

得回家了。(用作副词)

I can’t complete the task by Saturday; you expect too much of me.我星期六以前无法完成

任务，你对我期望过高了. (用作名词)

3. 接可数名词或不可数名词的单词或短语：some 一些；a lot of/lots of大量的，许多；

plenty of很多的；a large quantity of/ large quantities of大量的；a mass of/masses of大量的，

大部分。

I took along some books on vacation.我带了一些书去度假.(接可数名语)

If you save some money each week, we can go on holiday.要是你每星期能存点儿钱，咱们

就可以外出度假了。(接不可数名词)

It takes a lot of money to build a railway.修筑一条铁路要花费许多钱。(接不可数名词)

Tom is a bold thinker with lots of original ideas.汤姆是个敢于思考的人，富有创新观点。

(接可数名语)

We always keep plenty of spare paper, in case we run out.我们常大量的备用纸，以防纸用

完。(接不可数名语)

There are plenty of humorous tales in the book. 该书中有许多幽默的故事。(接可数名词)

The factory puts out a large quantity of wood products.这家工厂生产大量的木制品。(接不

可数名语)

The young dancers looked so charming in their beautiful clothes that we took masses of

pictures of them. (接可数名词)年轻的舞蹈者穿着新衣服看起来如此迷人以至于我们拍了很

多她的照片。

The ship cut its way slowly through masses of ice.那艘轮船慢慢地在一块块冰中行驶。(接

不可数名词)

注意：

①这些短语后接不可数名词作主语时谓语动词一般用单数，后接可数名词作主语时谓语

动词一般用复数，但large quantities of与masses of后接可数或不可数名词作主语时谓语动

词都用复数。

With more forests being destroyed, huge quantities of good earth are being washed away

each year.随着更多的森林遭破坏，每年有大量肥沃的土壤被冲走。

②plenty of一般用于肯定句中，在否定句和疑问句中可用enough, many等。

Mary has many e-mails to answers, so she hasn’t enough time to prepare lunch. 玛丽要回复

许多邮件，所以她没足够的时间准备午饭。
