Part 3 Reading Comprehension (40 points)
Task 1 Read the following passage. Choose the best answer.
The anti-plastic partnership
Plastic pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems of our times. It is said that about
8 million pieces of plastic are thrown into our oceans every day: endangering marine animals, spoiling
beautiful beaches and, worst of all, ending up in the food chain.
Thankfully, awareness of this issue is spreading, and many people are determined to do something
about it. Many countries have now introduced a “bag tax”,meaning that shoppers have to pay to use a
plastic bag. Local businesses (such as cafes) have been asked to stop using plastic cutlery and putting
plastic straws in drinks. Many people have started to use everyday items made out of other materials
instead of plastic. For example, bamboo toothbrushes are becoming popular. And finally, community
groups in towns and cities all over the world are getting together and finding out how they can beat the
problem of plastic pollution.
One such group is the "Anti-Plastic Partnership,, in Appleton, Wisconsin in the USA. The group
meets once a week to make cloth shopping bags and to discuss ways in which they can put an end to
plastic pollution. The group's founder, Ella Muster says, "Plastic pollution isn't going to go away. Ifs time
for communities to take action, working together for this important cause.”
The group meets every weekend, and currently has around 50 members. Ella says, "The local
community has been very supportive of what we're trying to do. Our ultimate goal is to make Appleton a plastic-free city.,,

Celebrating Christmas is far from their thoughts. Your local foodbank needs your help, now more than
ever.
Here are some of the ways you can make a difference.
Donate
We are always looking for donations of tinned food. Tinned vegetables, soup and pudding are all
very gratefully received. Please do not donate fresh food (such as fresh fruit, milk and bread) as this cannot
be kept for long periods of time. Also, we cannot accept donations of alcohol.
At this time of year, donations of children's toys are also very welcome. Toothbrushes and toiletries
are also gratefully received.
Volunteer
We are always grateful for volunteers who can help us to collect and sort through our donations. If
you have a few free hours a week, please consider joining our team. Together we can help and support

Task 4 The following is a formal email to a charitable organization. After reading it, fill in
each blank with no more than three words.
Dear Mr. Palmer,
I am writing to enquire about the possibility of volunteering at your animal shelter.
At the moment, I am in my third year of studying catering at college. I have some free time, and
would like to spend this giving something back to my community. Recently, I read a news report about
your shelter, and I really admire the work that you and your colleagues are doing to help homeless animals.
If possible, I would like to get involved. Although I don't have any experience of working with animals, I do have a dog, a cat and a turtle.
My dog is a rescue dog, and my family got her from a shelter three years ago. When she first arrived at
our house, she was very shy and frightened, and was in poor health. As a result of my time with our
family pet, I feel comfortable about handling and feeding animals, and know how to look after them
when they are ill or if they are frightened.
I would be free to volunteer at your shelter at weekends and on Friday afternoons. In addition to a
love for animals, I am hard-working, reliable and I enjoy working as part of a team.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Tom Bell

Directions: There are 5 recorded dialogues in this section. After each dialogue, there is a recorded
question. When you hear a question, choose the correct answer.
1.
M: Would you like to make a donation, Julie?
W: Sure. What cause are you fund-raising for?
Q: What does the man want?
2.
W: Look at all these cars on the road!
M: Yes. Ifs no surprise that this city is so polluted.
Q: What environmental problem does the man mention?
3.
M: I think I'd like to help out at our local fbodbank.
W: Good idea. Tve heard they're looking for new volunteers.
Q: What kind of work is the man hoping to do?
4.
W: How's your sister enjoying her volunteer teaching job in summer school?
M: She loves it. Kenya is beautiful, and she says the experience has changed her life.
Q: What kind of work is the man's sister doing?
5.
W: Do you give money to charity?
M: I don't give regularly, but I volunteer for a local charity once a week. Q: What does the man do to support good causes?
Section B
Directions: Listen to the two conversations and answer the questions.
Conversation 1
W: What were you saying to that man on the corner?
M: I was giving him money. You see, he was homeless.
W: Are you sure that's a good idea?
M: Well, do you have a better idea? Ifs a freezing cold night. I thought he could buy a hot meal and
something to drink.
W: I never give money to homeless people. I don't think it does anything to help them long-term.
M: Well, I wouldn't feel good about not doing anything to help.
W: Why not donate money to a charity, like a homeless shelter, for example? That way, you're helping
homeless people to get the support they need to make a lasting change.
M: Hm. Perhaps you're right. I still don't like the idea of walking past a homeless person without giving
them anything though.
W: I know what you mean. It does seem a bit heartless.
Conversation 2
W: You know, sometimes I feel really sad about the state of our planet.
M: What do you mean?
W: Well, there are so many environmental disasters happening. I'd like to do something to help, but I
don't know what.
M: Feeling sad isn't going to help anyone! Why don't you volunteer and make a difference?
W: I'm not sure about these volunteer jobs where you travel thousands of miles to clean a beach. Think
of the environmental pollution caused by flying!
M: You're right I suppose. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities closer to home though.
W: Such as?
M: Well, you could join in the Saturday beach-cleans. A group of students meet, go to the beach and
pick up all the plastic litter they find there. They take a picnic, so it's not all work!
W: Hm. I might be interested in doing something like that.
M: You should give it a try! It's a fun day out at the beach, and you'd also be doing something to help
the environment. Section C
