A serious problem for today's society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to

improve their Lives

It is not only a financial problem but also a quashing of the system we want for our society

I would

like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees

To make this possible, a percentage of

profits should be set aside for this purpose

But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it

may softer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs

Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual

This means each person must

save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement

This does not seem a very fair model since some people

have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years

This means

the government might have to step in to care for the poor

In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly

This could be financed through

government taxes to increase the level of pensions

Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior daises,

which can help provide a comfortable life for them

Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is

not a truly viable answer

The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying

to care for the young

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the

elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages

Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some

combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations

1

What is the passage mainly about?

A

The problems faced by the old in society

B

Why we should take responsibility for the old

C

How we can improve the lives of the old

D

Where the old can go to get their pensions

2

According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?

A

Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire

B

Increase savings levels of people during their working years

C

Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old

D

Make available pensions for those who have retired

3

The underlined word "viable" most probably means"_ "

A

impossible

C

useful

4

What can be concluded from the passage?

A

Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money

B

Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age

C

Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people

D

There is no single solution to the problems of the old

5

What is the writer's main purpose in writing this article?

B

practical

D

successful

A

To point out the need for government supped for old people

B

To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people

C

To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem

D

When I was in college, I spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Strathclyde in

Glasgow, Scotland. In my brief time there, I came to love Scotland for its local culture, food and scenery.

You might think, “Scotland isn’t so different from the US; they still speak English there!” But when I

stepped off the plane, I was greeted by a gruff-voiced(

声音粗哑的

) lady at customs. “You’ll be coming from

America, then?” She asked me, and I nodded. “But all of our guys are leaving Glasgow for the States!” Her

thick Scottish English and sense of humor were obvious right away. I was not in the US any more, where

customs agents never joke around.

As I settled in at the university, I could feel myself getting used to hearing—and even speaking—the

Scottish English of my customs agent. In classroom discussions, people would say “em” when they couldn’t

think of what to say instead of “um”, which was great fun. After the first few weeks, I stopped chuckling

about this. Strathclyde students stayed up late into the night, running around campus and shouting, “Go!

Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go [curse word] Glasgow!” Pretty soon, I was no longer saying “thanks” at the

supermarket—instead, I said “cheers”.

My Scottish friends drank whiskey and ate haggis(

羊杂碎布丁

). I drank plenty of whiskey but felt

ashamed to admit that I wasn't brave enough to try haggis. Scottish bakeries usually sell bridies (

肉馅饼

).

Add a cup of tea—though I usually Americanized it by choosing coffee instead—and a bridie makes for a

delicious breakfast.

Every time I took a train anywhere in Scotland, I’d gaze out at the rolling hills and wonder if grass was

greener than anywhere else in the world. Then I’d reflect that there’s a reason this country was the birthplace

of golf.

1

What did the author think of the lady at customs?

A

Impolite.

B

Friendly.

C

Serious.

D

Calm.

2

Which of the following can replace the underlined word “chuckling” in Paragraph 3?

A

Talking loudly.

B

Comparing.

C

Laughing quietly.

D

Hearing.

3

What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A

To explain why Scotland was famous for golf.

B

To promote the development of Scottish catering trade.

C

To introduce different pronunciations of “em”and “um”.

D.

To share his experiences in Scotland as an exchange student.

The tornado came without any sign—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my

husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around , from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran

upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.

No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. The bones of the house shook, and the

power went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar

(绝缘材料)

through the house. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the

closet down there is wedged

(塞进)

underneath a brick staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest(

坚固的

) place in our town

house to wait things out.

I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind

lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister(

楼梯扶手

) and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in

place. In those seconds of stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling.

As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Shards of glass that looked like broken ice flew

everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us

by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us. The back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into

the darkness outside.

Instantly I reached the closet, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because

of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees

and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out and

into the bay. “Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to.

All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then

everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d

go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me.”

Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were

completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely

injured.

A 12-year-old with end stage cancer, the child’s parents had recently moved her from the hospital to her

home in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Some days later the girl’s breath quickened, and her father phoned the family’s

hospice nurse. Please come, he said.

The nurse knew the visit would require more than four hours of her time: a two-hour drive in each direction, plus

her time with the girl. Why don’t we connect over FaceTime, she asked. The father agreed, and they connected.

The nurse asked the father to move his daughter gently to her side, then to her back, to lift the child’s shirt. The

nurse would ask: What do you see, what concerns you, and the father would explain. In this fashion the pair examined

the girl --- the nurse on her computer, the father his iPad. Together they decided that the nurse’s presence was not

necessary, that the child had more time.

Later, the father reported feeling comforted by the nurse. He appreciated her availability, the fact that she could see

what he saw, and their ability to discuss it in real time.

Telemedicine has become a trend in America. Some hospitals have gone so far as to specially design telemedicine

clinics. The room is staged like an office but with better lighting. There’s a nice desk for the clinician to sit behind, a
