Explore the history of Vancouver’s Chinatown through the events filled with stories from the people
who lived, worked and played there.
Upcoming Events:
Teacher’s Tour of the CSC Vancouver’s Chinatown
Looking for some new field trip ideas for your students? Join us for a one-hour exploration of our
“touchable teaching collection”. Learn about the diverse experiences of the Chinese Canadian
community and how we’re using these stories in our school programs. Participants have the
opportunity to win a free school trip!
A Passion for Music in Chinatown
Join Henry Young and “The Chinese Sinatra” Gary Lee for a delightful July afternoon of
storytelling and music. Hear their charming stories. Towards the end of their talks, Henry and Gary

2. School bus drivers have to keep the kids safe on their way to and from school. But one driver,
Patricia Reitz, goes way above and beyond. She has made it her mission to give each child a
handmade hat to keep them warm in the winter.
Miss Patty—the name students, teachers and parents call her—has given away more than 7,000 hats
in the nearly three decades she worked for the Clarence Central School District in New York,
reported WGRZ.
“She cares about her students,” third grade teacher Deborah Bosworth told WGRZ. “Any student
that has been on Miss Patty’s bus gets a hat, and they also get a friend. Miss Patty is one of the
favorites.”
This tradition began when Reitz took up crocheting (
针织
). She would work on items while she
waited for students to get on the bus after school. One boy got on the bus, and he asked what she
was doing. He said wearing a hat would be great going down ski slopes (
斜坡
). So Reitz asked him
what color he liked. “That started everything,” said Reitz. And it snowballed from there.
Reitz specializes in Santa hats, but she will make other hats too. The hats are two colors that the
students choose and always have two tassels (
流苏
) Reitz buys all needed for the hats but she also
receives gift cards from families especially around Christmas. This is a gift that comes from the
heart. Despite the amount of work involved, Reitz has no intention of stopping. In fact, she has
already began working on next year’s hats. “I’m going to do it until I can’t do it anymore,” she said.
While other school bus drivers will purchase hats and gloves for their charges, a homemade gift
made with love brings warmth even during the coldest winter days.

3. For centuries, people thought that fish did not feel pain or emotions. Now research has shown that
fish not only have feelings but can also sense others’ moods.
When a human understands and shares the feelings of another person, this is called empathy (
共情
).
Scientists have found that a chemical in the brain called oxytocin (
催产素
) is involved in our ability
to connect with others.
A team of researchers tested zebra fish with a series of experiments. First, they placed the fish in two
separate containers and gave one group a material that caused them to act fearful—either freezing or
swimming irregularly. Even though the fish in the nearby container had not touched the material,
they also began to freeze in fear. “They respond to other individuals being frightened… just like us,”
said Ibukun, a co-author of the study. The scientists tried the experiment again with the changed fish
whose brains would not produce oxytocin. These fish were much less likely to act anxious when
they saw other fish showing fear. If researchers gave them an injection (
注射
) of oxytocin, their
ability to empathize returned.
Finally, researchers played videos of fearful fish on one side of the container and relaxed fish on the
other side. Normal fish moved closer to the side that showed the fearful fish, which might have been
an attempt to comfort them. The changed fish did not move toward either side.
Looking at the normal fish’s brains, researchers saw activity in an area similar to the one humans
and other mammals (
哺乳动物
) use when empathizing with others. This could mean that the ability
to have empathy developed more than 350 million years ago, when fish and mammals shared a
common ancestor.
1. How many experiments did the researchers do?
A
.
One. B
.
Two. C
.
Three. D
.

D
.

4. NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter has completed its first test flight, marking a major milestone
for the agency’s efforts to explore the red planet. The 4-pound helicopter took off from the Martian
surface on Monday, hovering (
盘旋
) for about 30 seconds before landing back down.
The flight was powered by four lithium—ion (
锂离子
) batteries, which were recharged using solar
panels on the helicopter. Because of the distance between Earth and Mars, engineers had to program
the flight ahead of time and wait for the results to come back, making the entire process autonomous.
“This is a Wright brothers moment,” said MiMi Aung, project manager for Ingenuity at NASA’s Jet
Propulsion Laboratory. “I can’t imagine what it took for Orville and Wilbur Wright to do their first
flight, but I sure can tell you that the helicopter team poured their heart and soul into this and did
everything they could imagine to make this successful.”
The helicopter was transported to Mars attached to NASA’s Perseverance rover (
探月车
), which
arrived on the planet in February. Over the next few weeks, the team will test different sides of the
helicopter’s capabilities, including up-and-down flights and flying longer distances.
The final goal of the mission is not only to show new technologies and gather more data on Mars,
but also to pave the way for “searching missions” that can explore terrain that is inaccessible to
rovers.
“This really sets the stage for us to introduce an aerial dimension (
空中维度
) to our exploration of
planets in the solar system in the future,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for
NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
1. What can we learn from the text?

5 Ways Your Child Builds Important Life Skills through Play
Every parent wants their children to develop well. Sometimes it seems that a child’s game is empty
entertainment and 1 . However, for a child, play is the main way of communicating with the world,
mastering new knowledge and skills. The game performs several functions.
Education and development.
Through the game, the child learns new skills and develops speech, thinking and logic (
逻辑
),
attention and other mental functions. Outdoor games promote physical development and strengthen
the health of the child. 2 Thus, games contribute to the cognitive and physical development of the
child.
3
Through the game, the child explores the world around him and makes his little discoveries.
Through games a child learns the laws of physics, the diversity of animals, plants, professions, etc.
Way of communication.
4 : joys, anxieties, fears, hopes, expectations. Often, through the game, the child tells parents
something important about himself and learns something important about his parents.
Development of social skills and familiarity with social roles.
In games, children learn to follow the rules, control their behavior, develop communication skills
with peers and adults. In games, children learn different social roles: parents, friends, teachers,
doctors, kings and presidents.
Expression of feelings and learning to manage emotions.
Often the game becomes a way for the child to deal with their difficult experiences to express their
feelings of fear, anger, sadness, shame. If a child is afraid of the dark, he can play a game in which
he puts his toys in dark places, and then comforts them and says that it is not scary: 5 .
