Tour in the Museum

Experts or folk scholars lead the tour in the museum and throw

further light on certain exhibits. Lectures and interactive events

will be held to discuss popular scientific topics. Two public themed

lectures will be held every month, like

“Unlock the Space Station〞

and

“Looking into the Amazing Brain〞

A 60-year-old homeless woman named Smokie has sleeping outside

in dirt a few doors down from a man named Elvis Summers.

Most mornings, she stops by Elvis’s Los Angeles apartment and

asks if he has any recyclable materials for her. Through these

conversations they struck up a friendship.

One morning, Elvis saw a news article about a man in Oakland

who has been making tiny houses out of deserted materials. He was

inspired to put off paying a few bills so he could buy the wood and

hardware to make Smokie a brand new shelter. It took him five days

to build it, and now, for the first time ten years, Smokie has a place

to hang the sign, “Home Sweet Home.〞

“I had nowhere to really build it, so I just built it in the

street outside of my apartment,〞Elvis told Good News Network. The

local LAPD police have been super cool, and have told me they support

it—as long aswe move it to a different spot every 72 hours. 〞

He made this pretty time-lapse(延时的) video showing how he did

it. The materials, including two locks on the front door and strong

wheels for moving it around, cost him about $500.

“I've met so many homeless people, good people,〞 Elvis said

in an email. “Since I built Smokie's, I've had several people asking

me to make them a tiny home and it's turned into much more than just

the one house 1 wanted to build.〞

Although he runs an online retail store that sells EDM clothes,

he has decided to launch an ambitious project to fund more shelters.

He plans to get lighter and cheaper materials—without sacrificing

the strength of the house—for the next round. Rick Sassen, a branch

manager, kindly donated the roof shingles and cedar supporting

Smokie's house, final items Elvis couldn’t afford on his own. Saseen

has promised to work out a deal on future building materials for the

same cause.

China officially informed the World Trade Organization on

Tuesday that it will ban the import of 24 different types of solid

waste by the end of this year as part of a campaign to deal with

environmental pollution and protect people’s health.

In response to growing public concerns over the potential

environmental and health danger caused by the increasing amounts of

solid waste imported into the country for recycling and treatment,

China passed a special law in 1995 to control imports of waste

materials, such as plastics, slag from steelmaking, unsorted scrap

paper and discarded textile materials.

A year later, the country published a list for solid waste

imports and began implementing a permit system to control the import

volumes and types of waste imported.

However, due to the lack of effective supervision(监管) and the

failure of relevant departments to fulfill their duties, solid waste

imports have not been effectively controlled.

So far, China is the world’s largest importer of solid waste.

According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, China

imported 7.3 million metric tons of plastic waste worth $3.7 billion

in 2021, accounting for 56 percent of global imports of solid waste.

Correct recycling of solid waste materials is an important part

of the global economy, and moderate imports of scrap plastic, scrap

paper and scrap rubber products, such as vehicle tires, can to some

extent, make up for China's shortage of various raw materials.

However, the lack of supervision has resulted in the country’s

severe soil and environmental worsening.

Given that China’s continuing efforts to push for industrial

transformation and upgrading have resulted in a noticeable decline

in the demand for the materials recycled from solid waste imports.

It is right for the country to restrict such imports for the sake

of the environment and public health, and to better adapt to the

changed industrial structure.

8. Why will China ban the import of some waste materials?

A. The amount of imported solid waste is increasing.

B. The demand for imported solid waste is in decline.

C. Some solid waste has damaged the environment and public health.

D. People are more concerned about the environment and health now.

9. Which phrase has the same meaning as the underlined word?

A. Carrying out. B. Putting off.

Fighting against.

10. What is the problem when China deals with the imported waste?

A. Some imported waste is difficult to control.

B. The environment can’t afford the imported waste.

C. Some departments haven’t shouldered their duties.

D. Some useful materials are also among the solid waste.

11. What can we learn from the passage?

A. China will not rely on importing solid waste any more.

B. Solid waste plays an important part in the global economy.

C. Calling off. D.

materials.

I'll admit I've never quite understood the obsession (难以破

For both sides,GM foods seem to act as a symbol: you're

pro-agricultural business or science is exactly

what we need more of when it comes to GM foods, which is why I was

happy to see Nature devote a special series of articles to the GM

food conclusion: while GM crops haven’t yet

realized their initial promise and have been dominated by

agricultural businesses, there is reason to continue to use and

develop them to help meet the enormous challenge of sustainably

feeding a growing planet.

That doesn't mean GM crops are perfect,or a one-size-fits-all

solution to global agriculture anything that can

increase farming efficiency—the amount of crops we can produce per

acre of land—will be extremely crops can and almost

certainly will be part of that suite of tools, but so will traditional

non-industry research done on GM crops—not just because we'd worry

less about prejudice, but also because seed companies like Monsanto

genetic modification.I'd like to see GM research on less commercial

crops, like corn.I don't think it's vital to label GM ingredients in

food, but I also wouldn't be against it—and industry would be smart

to go along with labeling, just as a way of removing fears about the

technology.

Most of all, though,I wish a tenth of the energy that's spent

endlessly debating GM crops was focused on those more pressing
