When Pearl Fryar began his gardening on his farmland in
South California in 2009, he wanted to achieve something amazing
in his 30s--to be the first African American to win the local garden
club's "Yard of the Month"award, which was his dream when he
was 15.
When his garden was completed in 2016, people from many
countries, including Canada, Brazil and even South Africa, flooded
to see his creations.
Fryar started by using bushes that were thrown away-plants that looked dead to most people.
As an excellent engineer, he worked days in a factory. So, Fryar managed his garden at night.
Neighbors got used to seeing one litle headlight moving about when Fryar cut and pruned* his
growing bushes. Fryar created fantastic skills to make plants grow into fantastic shapes:
spirals*and platforms and arches, reaching up to the sky. "He has a way of ordering plants to do
what he wants them to do, using plastic ropes, coat hangers even his wife's old stockings," says a
neighbor.
Many professional gardeners were amazed by what Fryar achieved. "The garden itself was
created from lack* of knowledge," said Fryar in the opening ceremony of his garden on May 1",
2016,"because I didn't know what I should or should not do with plants. For one time in my life, I
got paid for my 'ignorance'. "
Fryar's garden now includes about 400 species* of plants and 150 different plant sculptures.
On his front lawn, four-foot-tall litters filled with bright red plants spell "Diligence, 'Ignorance'
and Patience". These are the principles Fryar lives by. .
Fryar also welcomes people who can't afford to pay. "You can be somebody,"he tells students
who visit the garden. "Show me anyone who works with a passion and patience, and they're going
to be successful. "
29. Fryar's garden is in _________________.
A. the USA B. Brazil C. Canada D. South Africa
D. Hawkins
30. It takes Fryar about ____________years to complete the garden.
A. 30 B. 15 C. 11 D. 7
31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Fryar worked very hard in his garden all day long.
B. Fryar could make the dead plants come back to life.
C. Fryar was not professional when he began his gardening.
D. Fryar has gathered about 400 plants in his garden till now.
32. Why do people like Fryar's garden?
A. Because the garden is open for free.
B. Because it is managed by an African American.
C. Because it's creative with wonderful shapes of plants.
D. Because Fryar used ropes, hangers and stockings in his garden.

Chocolate cakes, colorful candies and home-made cookies! They can
easily make your mouth water a lot! But wait! Here's a suggestion you might
ever hate but need: stop eating added sugar, which lurks* in nearly 70
percent of packaged foods, snacks, most breakfast foods and sauces.
Many scientists believe that added sugar is a main cause in the
overweight epidemic*, but normal-weight people can suffer the same problems because of too
much sugar. A 15-year study found that eating high amounts of added sugar doubles the risk of
heart disease, even for people who aren't overweight.
Added sugar also has something to do with an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and
Alzheimer's disease.
And too much added sugar in your diet can damage your liver*, similarly to the way that
alcohol can. According to a study from WHO, about a third of American adults and 13% of
children have fatty liver disease, a condition to do with too much added sugar, which can progress
to serious, even deadly, liver illness.
"Whether you are thin or fat, you can benefit by reducing the sugar in your diet," says Dr.
Robert Lustig, a professor at the University of California," Added sugar turns on the aging
programs in your body. The more added sugar you eat, the faster you age. "
So how do you start reducing the added sugar? To begin with, it's a good idea to cut added
sugar out of breakfast, which tends to be the sweetest meal of the day. Cut sugary drinks and eat
whole foods rather than packaged foods. If you long for dessert, eat fruit instead(no grapes or red
dates, which are mostly sugar). When choosing the food from a supermarket, read food labels.
"Added sugars go by many different names like 'brown sugar, ''beet sugar,' and honey," says Dr.
Frank Hu, from the Harvard T. H. Chan School.
_ ▲ . During the first five days of no added sugar, you will probably experience the
desire for sweets. But stick with it, and soon it will fade*. You'll tart to feel more energetic and
focused. After 10 days, one important study of overweight children has shown improvements in
blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. But researchers say children should continue cutting
added sugar to be in a better healthy condition.
Note that cutting added sugar doesn't mean you have to remove sweet foods from your life
entirely. Once you've got added sugar under control, the occasional* treat of chocolate or dessert
won't damage you. "It's got to be under your control, not the food industry's control. "Dr. Lustig
says.
33. According to Dr. Robert Lustig, too much added sugar will ___________________.

D. cause cancers or Type 2 diabetes
32. _______________when we are trying to cut down sugar.
A. We can't choose the food labeled with "honey"
B. We should not have breakfast or sugar drinks
C. We should not eat sweet things in our daily life
D. We can't eat fruits including grapes and red dates
35. Which of the following is the best t fill in"_ ▲ "in Paragraph 6?
A. Cutting added sugar isn't easy
B. Don't have chocolate or dessert
C. Cut added sugar under the following rules
D. Health condition can be improved in five days
36. What's the best title for this passage?
A. No Sugar, No Diseases

"I don't know——I hadn't thought. "She turned the handle of the
silver coffeepot toward him. He poured some coffee for both.
In the background, two little girls were playing blocks in the light of the lamps. There was an
easy, clean smell of coffee in the evening air.
"A war? An atom bomb? A comet?""
"None of those at all," he stirred his coffee. "Three days ago, there's an alarm from the super
AI-computer of the UN, which only contains two words: DANGER, UNAVOIDABLE, and a
date.
The AI-computer turned itself off right after sending the alarm. "
"And when will it stop? The world, I mean. "
"Sometime tonight for us…. I notice you didn't even argue about this. Why not?"
C. Fruits Are the Key to Happiness
"I guess I know the reason," she said. "the alarm spread widely enough even the women in
our neighborhood were talking about it. When I joined them, I learned about the news. "
He sat back in his chair, looking at the girls and then at her. The girls were laughing as they
waved their hands and knocked down their house of blocks.
"I always imagined people would be screaming in the streets at a time like this," she raised
her eyes from the coffee and looked out.
"I guess not. You don't scream, anyway," he smiled.
"Do you know,. I won't miss anything but you and the girls. I won't miss a thing except my
family and perhaps the change in the weather or just little things. "She sighed, "now I wonder
what our neighbors will do, this evening, for the next few hours. "
"Go to a show, watch TV, put the children to bed, in a way that's something to be proud
of—like always. "
He put down coffee. "Well, next," he asked. "dishes?"
They washed the dishes peacefully. At eight-thirty the girls were put to bed and kissed good
night. This time the door was left a bit open instead of shutting completely.
The clock struck ten-thirty and eleven and eleven-thirty.
He went through the house and turned out the lights and locked the doors, and they went into
the bedroom, standing in the cool darkness.
"Oh, my god! I left the water running in the kitchen," she left and came back.
Something about this was so funny that he had to laugh.
She laughed with him.
They lay in their warm night bed.
"Good night," he said.
"Good night," she said, adding softly, "dear. "
The sun also rose the next morning. . .
