The Research on Concept of Myth in a Century Chinese

Mythology

Abstract: Since 1903, Chinese mythology has experienced more than a century

of development and has made considerable progress, with a large number of

mythologists emerged. Thus, it is very essential to give a summarization to the

Chinese mythology with over 100 years of history.

The concept of myth is an important topic in the study of mythology. It is

scholars’ understanding to the definition, category, origin, classification and function

of the myth and embodies a concentrated reflection of the scholars’ mythological

thinking, thus, it is the crystallization of the research results. A retrospect to the

development of the concept of mythology is an important part of the history of

mythology. At present, there are fewer research achievements made to the concept of

myth and lack of system. Thus, research works with the concept of myth as theme is

still not abundant. Therefore, it makes the research in this field become more

academically significant.

The main body of this paper is composed of the cultural anthropology mythology,

history mythology, literature mythology, folklore mythology, archaeology mythology

and the conclusion made. The first part summarizes the mythological views of Mao

Dun, Xie Liuyi, Lin Huixiang and Ye Shuxian and makes clear the connection among

these four people to summarize and develop the thread of thought. The second part

summarizes the mythological views of Gu Jiegang, Yang Kuan and Tong Shuye, pays

attention to the influence of the “Suspicion of the Ancient and Detection of Forgery”

thought, and the contributions made by these two people to Gu Jiegang theory’s

development. The third part summarizes the mythological views of Lu Xun, Yuan Ke

and Qian Minzi, explores the relationship between myth and literature and myths’

functional role as literature. The fourth part summarizes the mythological views of

Zhong Jingwen, Sun Zuoyun, Liu Xicheng and Tao Siyan, pays closer attention to the

birth and development of the study of folklore mythology and the enhancement made

by folklore to mythology. The fifth part summarizes the mythological views of Xu

Xusheng, Dingshan and Zhang Guangzhi, studies the archaeological and historical

debate, points out these two people’s criticism and improvement and makes it clear

the boundary between the archaeology and history. The conclusion is made that the

Chinese mythology is characteristic for its lineage with the cultural anthropology, the

debate between the archaeology and history and the rise of folklore. All these have

provided acknowledgement to the innovation of the development of Chinese

mythology.
