My Favorite Place: Xiamen, a Coastal Paradise

As a student from inland China, I had always dreamed of

visiting the seaside. The images of crashing waves, sandy

beaches, and salty ocean breezes captivated my imagination

from a young age. So when I had the chance to visit the coastal

city of Xiamen during my university break, I jumped at the

opportunity. Little did I know that this trip would spark a deep

love affair with this charming city that would make it my favorite

place in all of China.

Xiamen's location on the southeastern coast gives it a

mediterannean-like climate that is pleasantly warm and humid

year-round. Swaying palms trees line the waterfront promenade,

offering shady respites on hot summer days. The city has a

unique layout, built across a series of small islands connected by

bridges and an underground tunnel. This gives Xiamen a quaint,

almost village-like feel despite being a bustling metropolitan

area.

One of my favorite things about Xiamen is simply strolling

along the wide seaside pathways, taking in the intoxicating mix

of fresh and briny ocean air. Couples young and old can be seen

walking hand-in-hand, while kids chase each other and street

performers delight passersby. The promenade comes alive at

night with a dazzling display of rainbow-colored lights outlining

the bridges and buildings.

Of course, no visit to Xiamen would be complete without

spending time on its world-famous beaches. Hulishan Bathing

Beach is one of the most popular, its powdery golden sands

contrasting beautifully with the turquoise waters. You can rent a

shade tent, lounge in the sun, or try your hand at a variety of

water sports from banana boat rides to jet skiing. The real show,

however, is at sunset when the entire beach seems to turn into

an open-air theater with everyone watching the sun slowly dip

below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery oranges and reds.

For a quieter beach experience, I prefer the more secluded

Huandao Road Coastal Resort Area in the south of the main

island. Tucked between lush green hills and the sea, it feels like
