Should Kids Be Allowed to Have Smartphones? A Middle

Schooler's Perspective

Hi there! I'm a 7th grader at Maple Grove Middle School, and

let me tell you, the debate over whether kids my age should be

allowed to have smartphones is a hot topic. Adults are always

going on about how we're "addicted to our screens" and "lack

social skills" because of our phones. But in my opinion, they're

being way too harsh and not seeing the whole picture.

First of all, smartphones aren't just for games and social

media – they're incredibly useful tools for learning and

productivity too. With a few taps, I can look up information for

my school projects, take notes, do research, and even access

educational apps and videos to help me understand tough

concepts. How cool is that? It's like having a tiny portable library

and study buddy in my pocket.

Plus, smartphones help me stay organized and on top of my

schoolwork. I can set reminders for assignments, keep track of

my schedule, and instantly message my friends about study

sessions or group projects. Back in the day, our parents had to

write everything down in agendas and pass physical notes

around. With smartphones, it's all just a few clicks away – so

much more efficient!

And let's be real, socializing and having fun is a huge part of

being a kid. Smartphones allow me to easily keep in touch with

my friends through group chats, share funny memes and TikTok

videos, and just stay connected even when we're not physically

together. Sometimes parents worry that we're "addicted" and

don't interact face-to-face anymore, but that's not true at all. We

utilize smartphones to plan hangouts, coordinate activities, and

make the most of our free time as a squad.

I think a lot of adults assume we're just mindlessly scrolling

through social media all day, but the reality is, we use our

smartphones for so much more than that. Sure, I'll admit I spend

some time on Instagram, Snapchat or whatever the latest app is

– but I'm also using educational apps like Quizlet for studying,

productivity tools to stay on track with assignments, and group

chats to collaborate on projects. Smartphones aren't inherently

good or bad – it's about how you choose to utilise them.
