When you go to the doctor, you like to come away with a
prescription
.
It makes you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the
doctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person needs is
some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo.
A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or ail empty capsule. Even though they
have no medicine in them, these things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is
medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen?
The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body
can heal itself. It is as if there was a doctor in each of us. The doctor will heal the body
for us if we let it. But it is not yet known just how the placebo works to heal the body.
Some people say it works because the human mind fools itself. These people say that if
the mind is fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did, and the body
will feel better.
Placebos do not always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with
the relationship between the patient and the doctor. If the patient has a lot of trust in the
doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient, then the placebo is more likely
to work. So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all.
A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expect a bad reaction to medicine,
then they will also show a bad reaction to the placebo. This would seem to show that a
lot of how you react to medicine is in your mind rather than in your body. Some doctors
still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think
there is still not enough known about it.
The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is
stronger than we think it is. There are people who say you can heal your body by using
your mind. And the interesting thing is that even people who swear this is not possible
have been healed by a placebo
.

Derek Rabclo is not the only surfer to conquer Hawaii' s famous
Pipeline big wave break, but while all others use their sight to do it, this young
professional surfer must rely only on his other senses. That's because he is completely
blind.
When Derek was born, over 24 years ago, he got his name from Derek Ho, the first
Hawaiian surfing world champion. A surfing enthusiast himself, Emesto dreamed that
his son would share the talent of his uncle, a professional surfer. Unfortunately, Derek
was born completely blind, but this didn't slop his family from believing lhat he could
do anything he wanted, even if that meant becoming a surfer.
At age 2, Derek received a bodyboard and the beaches of Guarapari, Brazil,
became his backyard. He was always comfortable in the water and surfing was in his
blood, but he didn’t actually try riding a wave until he turned 17, when his father
bought him a surfboard. His father taught him the basics and encouraged him to keep
practicing, but after successfully standing up on the surfboard, Derek knew he needed
to become much better if he was going to achieve Emesto's dream and become a
professional surfer. So he joined the Praia do Moroo surf school, where he studied
under coach Fabio Maru.
Standing up on a surfboard and conquering small waves is one thing, while
gathering the courage to take on Hawaii's board-breaking Pipeline is another. But that’s
exactly what Derek Rabelo set out to do just months after learning how to surf.
Everyone told him it was too dangerous, but he felt he could do it. And he did, earning
the praise of famous professional surfers like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. Now 24,
Rabelo has been surfing the Pipeline every winter since.

The first truly autonomous cars — vehicles that drive down the streets
with no one behind the wheel — have finally arrived.
Waymo, which began life as Google’s self-driving car project, announced that it
had let its driverless cars loose in parts of Phoenix, Arizona, with nobody in the front
seats to take over in case of emergency. Members of the public taking part in a Waymo
trial in the desert city in the south-west US will be able to order the vehicles to come
through an app “in the next few months”, the group said.
Potentially one of the most revolutionary (
革命性的
) new technologies, as well as
one of the most advertised, driverless cars have been at the centre of a race between big
automakers and technology companies. But while a number of groups are testing the
technology on the streets with back-up drivers behind the wheel, most believe the
approach of full autonomy is at least two years away.
Google shocked the auto industry when it first showed a basic version of its
driverless technology seven years ago, and it then invested more than $ l bn in
autonomous vehicle research.
Rivals (
竞争对手
) admit it still has a technology lead, though skeptics question
whether the artificial intelligence is good enough to respond to the many unforeseen
events that could occur on the road.
Waymo believes it is the first company to reach a standard known in the driverless
car world as level 4, meaning its cars can drive under full autonomy in preset areas that
have been carefully mapped out and tested. Uber, General Motors, Aptiv PLC, BMW
and others have been conducting testing to reach level 4, but all of them still keep a
human in the driver’s seat.
1
、
What should people do in the driverless car test?
A
.
Take over in an emergency.
B
.
Call for a car without an app.
C
.
Let the car operate in full autonomy.
D
.
Test the car in a deserted place.
2
、
The third paragraph may be used to show .
A
.
Google’s driverless technology is really advanced
B
.
Way mo will be widely acknowledged two years later
C
.
driverless cars will damage the entire automobile market
D
.
the technology of driverless cars is developing too fast
3
、
Why is Waymo confident about trying out its first driverless cars?
A
.
Because it already invented a basic version.
B
.
Because it has a technology lead in this area.
C
.
Because it has reached full, level 4 autonomy.
D
.
Because its cars can drive wherever a person likes.
4

A
.
Supportive. B
.
Opposed.
C
.
Skeptical. D

Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV
rays while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a
report by the UK newspaper.
The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan and American company
Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on
newly fallen snow on a ski trail in Ishikawa District, northern Japan. They compared
the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan's Okinawa
District.
They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules (
千焦耳
) of UV
a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.
The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological (
气象的
) Agency. According to
the agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent,
compared to 80 percent in the new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent
with a 300-meter rise in height.
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That's why we wear sunscreen on our
skin before we get out in the sun. But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also
harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time,
you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eye, which is harmful. Your eyes will
become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light. Fortunately, this is
usually temporary and seldom causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies
and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a
period of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total
blindness.
