When you go to the doctor, you like to come away with a

prescription

It makes you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the

doctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person needs is

some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo.

A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or ail empty capsule. Even though they

have no medicine in them, these things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is

medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen?

The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body

can heal itself. It is as if there was a doctor in each of us. The doctor will heal the body

for us if we let it. But it is not yet known just how the placebo works to heal the body.

Some people say it works because the human mind fools itself. These people say that if

the mind is fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did, and the body

will feel better.

Placebos do not always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with

the relationship between the patient and the doctor. If the patient has a lot of trust in the

doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient, then the placebo is more likely

to work. So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all.

A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expect a bad reaction to medicine,

then they will also show a bad reaction to the placebo. This would seem to show that a

lot of how you react to medicine is in your mind rather than in your body. Some doctors

still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think

there is still not enough known about it.

The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is

stronger than we think it is. There are people who say you can heal your body by using

your mind. And the interesting thing is that even people who swear this is not possible

have been healed by a placebo

1

What do we know about placebo according to the passage?

A

It contains some sort of medicine.

B

It won’t function if you are negative about medicine.

C

2

Why is the doctor sometimes the most powerful placebo?

A

The patient needs help badly

B

The patient believes in the doctor

C

D

The doctor has carefully studied medicine

3

What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A

Men don't go through pregnancy or childbirth. Their hormone (

尔蒙

) levels don't nosedive. What exactly have they got to be depressed about? Quite a

lot, according to research from Sweden showing that, over the past 10 years, a

significant number of men have struggled with the transition(

过渡

) to fatherhood.

This latest research tries to quantify just how many men get postnatal(

)depression. Previous studies have found between 4% and 10% of men. while, in this

smallish sample of 447 Swedish fathers who volunteered (and may therefore not

represent your average dad), a surprising 28% of men had symptoms that scored above

mild levels of depression. Overall, 4% had moderate depression. Fewer than one in five

fathers who were depressed sought help, even though a third of those had thought about

harming themselves. While women in the UK are often asked a series of questions that

screen for postnatal depression (which affects up to 13% of women), the mental health

of fathers is rarely assessed.

The lead author of the Swedish paper, Elisa Psouni, from the department of

psychology at Lund University, says the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale(EPDS)

used for both women and men is not so accurate in picking up depression in fathers. Her

research showed higher levels of depression in dads because it added in a score more

reflective of "male" symptoms of depression such as agitation, anger, irritability(

易怒

),

working longer hours and drinking too much.

Depression in fathers may be rising not just because researchers are looking for it,

but because more new dads are struggling. Psouni believes fathers increasingly face the

same dilemmas that mothers do-including trying to combine parenthood with working

Fathers who got depressed often had external pressures, such as job issues, and if their

partner was depressed, their own risk of depression doubled. Lack of sleep, having twins

and conflict in the relationship can all contribute.

A depressed dad will play and smile less with his child. Children are deeply affected

by paternal postnatal depression with studies showing poorer measures of wellbeing and

more behavioral problems at the age of seven.

Fathers who sense they may be struggling and partners, relatives or friends who

notice an increase in imitability and anxiety in a man in the first year of parenthood

(paternal depression is more dispersed throughout the first 12 months) should consider

the possibility of paternal postnatal depression.

Cognitive behavioral therapy(

认知行为疗法

) can help, as can antidepressants. If

the depression is not recognised, says Psouni, "one of most terrible things is that you

catch up with yourself a year later and realise you have been really down and

struggling-and the first year of your child's life has gone.”

1

What is revealed about men according to a Sweden research?

A

They experience a sharp decline in hormone.

B

Many of them suffer from postnatal depression.

C

They seldom go through pregnancy or childbirth

D

Many of them qualify for the transition to fatherhood.

2

What do the statistics in Paragraph 2 indicate?

A

The researchers should invite more Swedish fathers.

B

Over half of Swedish fathers tend to harm themselves.

C

The mental health of fathers deserves more attention.

D

Postnatal depression affects British women more easily.

3

Why did Psouni's research show higher levels of depression in dads?

A

Researchers use a new measure for male symptom of depression.

B

Researchers adopt EPDS to accurately pick up depression in dads.

C

Fathers have trouble in coping with internal and external pressures.

D

Fathers are often faced with the doubled risk of partner depression.

4

What may happen to a father with paternal depression?

A

He may develop terrible behavioral habits.

B

He may avoid being recognized with depression.

C

He may decline cognitive behavioral therapy.

D

He may miss the chance of giving proper childcare.

In the hills outside Missoula, Montana, wildlife biologists are looking at

how climate change affects something very small: the snowshoe hare.

Life for snowshoe hares is pretty stressful

almost everything in the forest wants

to eat them.

Alex Kumar, a graduate student at the University of Montana, lists the animals that

are hungry

for hares. “Lynx, foxes, coyotes, […. even] red squirrels.”

Kumar and field technician Tucker Seitz spend months searching these woods for

hares, often listening for signals from hares they've already put radio collars on.

They catch other hares with wire traps about the size of a breadbox, with some

apple as bait (

诱饵

). Most of the hares they track live less than a year — a hazard (

险)

of being what Kumar calls “the cheeseburger of the ecosystem”.

But snowshoe hares have a special skill: camouflage. They're brown during the

summer, but turn white for the snowy winter months.

“There’s times when you’re tracking them and you know they’re really, really dose,

and you just can’t find them,” he says.

Hares switch color in the spring and fall in response to light, when the days get

longer or shorter. But if the snow comes late, you get a white hare on brown ground.

“And they really think that they’re camouflaged,” Kumar says. “They act like we

can’t see them.”

Kumar calls this “mismatching,” and it's becoming more of a concern with climate

change.

“If the hares are consistently molting (

脱毛

) at the same time, year after year, and

the snowfall comes later and melts earlier, there’s going to be more and more times

when hares are mismatched,” he says.

Scott Mills of North Carolina State University leads the research. He says they're

finding that mismatched hares die at higher rates. That’s a concern for the threatened

Canada lynx, which mainly eats these hares.

“It’s a very clear connection to a single climate change stressor,” Mills says.

Hares might be able to adapt over time. Some snowshoe hares in Washington State

don't turn white at all. Mills is trying to figure out whether hares and other wildlife can

adapt as fast as the climate is changing.

“But how fast is too fast?” he asks.

1

The word “camouflage”

Paragraph 6) is closest in meaning to .

A

escaping B

hiding

C

fighting D

scaring

2

According to the passage, snowshoe hares can now be easily discovered by their

enemies because they .

A

change their fur color to white too late

B

haven’t adapted to climate change

C

can no longer adapt to the change of light in spring and fall

D

find it more and more difficult to molt at the same time each year

3

Which best describes Mills' tone in the passage?

A

Approving. B

Enthusiastic.

C

Concerned. D

Doubtful.

25.(10分)

If we want to find out what kind of technology people used in the

past, we normally have to rely on archaeologists to find ruined buildings and parts of

tools or instruments or machines. Archaeologists then try to reconstruct, sometimes with

the help of computer technology, what these ancient buildings and objects must have

looked like, and how they might have been made. Sometimes historians are lucky and

find an ancient document with a written description of these ancient buildings and

objects.

We can understand, then, why Chinese historians were so excited when they found

cave paintings which show ancient science. They found these paintings in the

world-renowned Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City, in Northwest China's Gansu

Province. There are 500 man-made caves and they have survived for at least 1,600 years.

Almost all of these caves have paintings on their ceilings or walls and they date from the

4th to 14th centuries. Wang Jinyu is an expert on these cave paintings (also called

frescoes) and he says: “We discovered frescoes containing scientific and technological

content in almost all of the caves which have frescoes.” What is remarkable about these

cave paintings according to the Xinhua News Agency is that they provide evidence of

"scientific and technological inventions by ancient Chinese in maths, physics, chemistry,

astronomy, geography, agronomy, architecture, textiles, traffic and transportation, arms

and military equipment and medical sciences".

Among the discoveries experts have made are cave paintings showing ancient
