Fifth-grader Kayla Martel loves basketball. But her school doesn’t have a girls’

team. So for the past four years, Kayla has played on the boys’ team at St. John the

Apostle School in Clark, New Jersey. That hadn’t been a problem until earlier this

year. The team was told that it either had to ask Kayla and another girl to leave the

team or end its season early.

The team, called the Chargers, plays in a league (联赛) that didn’t allow mixed

teams after fourth grade. When the league leader found out that there were girls in the

team, he gave the coaches (教练) bad news. The team could keep playing but only

without the girls.

Keisha Martel, Kayla’s mom, is one of the Chargers’ coaches. She asked the team

to take a vote (投票), knowing it would be difficult for the kids to choose.

“They all said, ‘It doesn’t matter. We’re a team and we’re sticking together (团结
