“文明”的英译

上篇讨论“精神”一词之英译，本篇聚焦“文明”。“文明”一词内涵深广，与之搭配的词语亦

极其丰富。今天我们一起考察英文版《习近平谈治国理政》对该词的移译。

原文：在新中国成立100年时建成富强民主文明和谐的社会主义现代化国家

译文：turn China into a prosperous， democratic， culturally advanced and har-monious

modern socialist country by the centenary of the People’s Republic of China

点评：“文明”并未草率译为civilized，而是译作culturally advanced，可见译者匠心独

具;“现代化”译为modern较为常见，避免见“化”即用modernized。“新中國”更是依照惯例，直

奔主题，the People’s Republic of China。

原文：在五千多年的文明发展历程中，中华民族为人类文明进步做出了不可磨灭的贡献。

译文：Throughout 5000 years of development， the Chinese nation has made a significant

contribution to the progress of human civilization.

点评：本句汉语含有两处“文明”，其中“文明发展”中的“文明”在英文中阙如，而“人类文

明”中的“文明”忠实译出。另外，汉语中的“不可磨灭”在英文中淡化为significant，足见译者深

解国际语境中谦逊之道。手潮译员遇此往往倾向于“忠实地”译为indelible，倘真如此，语气稍

显豪壮。

原文：中国特色社会主义道路，既坚持以经济建设为中心，又全面推进经济建设、政治建

设、文化建设、社会建设、生态文明建设以及其他各方面建设。

译文：This path takes economic development as the central task， and brings along economic，

political， cultural， social， ecological and other forms of progress.

点评：因为译文中的上一句刚刚提及“中国特色社会主义”，此句承上省略这一术语，此乃

译者篇章方面的谋略。“生态文明”直接译为ecological progress， 与“精神文明”之译为cultural

progress异曲同工。如：中国特色社会主义是物质文明与精神文明全面发展的社会主义。

Socialism with Chinese characteristics is a form of socialism in which material and cultural progresses

go hand in hand.而在提到“精神文明创建活动”时，译者则使用了如下表述：various activities

concerning intellectual and cultural progress。用progress表示汉语之“文明”的另一常例为“政治文

明”，如：扩大社会主义民主，发展社会主义政治文明，expand socialist democracy and promote

socialist political progress。

原文：提高精神境界，培育文明风尚

译文：upgrade their moral outlook and foster civic virtues

点评：此处“文明”显指与公民相关的美德，英文采用civic，可谓精准。

原文：推动文明交流互鉴，可以丰富人类文明的色彩。

译文：Greater exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations can further enrich the colors

of various civilizations.

点评：其实，此句之难不在“文明”一词，而在语气的浑然一体。“推动”这一动作被译者以

太极手法化解为一个形容词的比较级，使原本可能复杂的英文结构瞬间明晰疏朗了。

原文：切实做到严格规范公正文明执法

译文：to ensure strict， impartial and civilized law enforcement

点评：或许因为“公正”则必然“规范”，译文省略了“规范”，“文明”直译为civilized倒也铿

锵有力。

原文：把我们的国家建设得更加富强、更加民主、更加文明、更加和谐、更加美丽

译文：make China richer and stronger， more democratic， more harmonious and more

beautiful

点评：显然，译者略译了“文明”一词，假如译文中一定要加上此词，你觉得该如何表达

呢？
