The Importance of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Have you ever felt really nervous or scared to try something

new? Maybe it was your first day at a new school, or maybe you

were about to perform in a play for the first time. That feeling of

being unsure and a little bit afraid is what we call being "out of

your comfort zone." Your comfort zone is the familiar place

where you feel safe and relaxed because you know what to

expect. But as scary as it might seem, stepping out of your

comfort zone is really important if you want to grow and learn

new things.

When I was in third grade, I had to step way out of my

comfort zone. My family moved to a brand new city and I had to

start at a completely new school. I didn't know anybody there

and I was really nervous about making new friends. On my first

day, I remember standing in the playground feeling shy and

alone. My comfort zone would have been to just stand there

quietly and not talk to anyone. But I knew that if I wanted to

make friends, I had to step out of my comfort zone and

introduce myself to the other kids.

So I took a deep breath, walked up to a group of girls, and

said "Hi, my name is Lily. I'm new here. Can I play with you?"

Those few words were so hard for me to say because I was so

nervous, but I'm really glad I said them. One of the girls smiled at

me and said "Sure, we're playing tag. You're it!" From that

moment on, we became best friends and I felt so much better

about being at my new school.

That experience taught me that amazing things can happen

when you step out of your comfort zone, even though it's scary

at first. If I had stayed in my comfort zone and not introduced

myself to those girls, I might have missed out on making great

friends and having a lot of fun that year.

Another time I had to step out of my comfort zone was when

I joined the school play last year. I had never acted on stage in

front of so many people before, and the idea of it made me really

nervous. My comfort zone would have been to not sign up for

the play at all. But I'm really glad I stepped out of my comfort

zone because being in the play ended up being one of the most

fun experiences I've ever had!
