My Self-portrait

My father thought I am his duplication, because we share many commons no matter in

appearance but also in aspect of characteristics. We are both very outstanding and optimistic. We

both like climbing mountains and going for an outing. Maybe because of the similarity of

characteristics, I tend to share many secrets with him. Sometimes, we are person-organization fit.

When meeting problem, he could consider problem from my point. Therefore, when family

members differ in opinions, it is easy for me to forge a united front with my father. This makes my

mother very jealous. I am very happy I could share so much with my father, who plays an very

important role in my course of growth.

The experience of being an Olympic volunteer leaves a deep impression to me. At Beijing

National Indoor Stadium, I met a handicapped man. He pointed at his broken legs and asked me:

“Are there any possibilities for me to ever be an athlete?” I froze for a second. “Oh, of course

there are, you look…healthy.” But my voice was uncertain. The poor man started crying bitterly.

“But there isn’t a chance, I’m just a piece of crap…” He chocked. “No, believe-in yourself.

Disabled people can show strong abilities which will make wholesome people marvel at.” The man

took my encouragement, wiped off his tears and swore to get well again. An Olympic volunteer

should never impale anyone and we should give people courage so as to make them face

difficulties directly.

One of my precious experience is to participate the long running. Along the long runway, I told

myself you had to keep going. I felt my breathing deepen and feet became heavier. Sweat was

dripping off from my brow. After surpassed by other runners, I gave all my power running to the

ending. In heart, I was yelling for my self. When crossing the finish line, I ranked third. But this time,

I defeated my previous self.

I enjoy the time I could stay alone, which is a good time for me to read books. In a quiet

afternoon, a cup of tea and a book are good match. I love to be alone. I never found the companion

that was so companionable as books. When reading books, I can communicate with different

professors in all walks of life, such as philosophers, doctors, and physicists. Books not only expends

my horizon, but also enrich my experience. Within books, I can find houses of gold. Within books, I

can find ladies as fair as jade. And I always regard reading books as a best way of self-cultivation.

Traveling has gradually become an inseparable part of my life. I love traveling and I enjoy

spending quit hour alone under the sunshine. Only contacting closely with nature, I could realize

the vastness of nature. Standing in the nature, I am usually aware that how small I am. The blue sky,

white clouds, fresh air and the dew of the morning all make me fresh. Then the whole day I will be

full of energy. By accident, I could find several plants with tenacious vitality fighting with rugged

environment. Touched by them, I get a lot of inspiration about life.

When I stepped into this school, I told to myself: this my near future, all starts here. Following I

will learn how to become a person, a integrated person, who has a fine body, can take on important

task, has independent thought, an open mind, intensive thought, and has the ability to judge right

and wrong. Once my teacher said : “you are not sewing, you are stylist; never forget which you

should lay out to people is your thought, not craft.” I will put my personality with my interest and

ability into my study, during these process I will combine learning with doing. If I can achieve this

“future”, I think that I really grow up. And I deeply believe kindred, good-fellowship and love will

enrich my life.

As a student, last year I had to face my failure in the examination. After each failure, I will

absorb courage from The old Man and the Sea. No book has ever influenced me so much as The

old Man and the Sea written by Ernest Hemingway about a fisherman named Santiago who finally

proved himself a hero by his perseverance and confidence. "A man is not made for defeat," said the

old man."A man can be destroyed but not defeated." Such words encourage me when I was upset.

This book tells me the truth of the saying "Failure is the mother of success." No matter what kind of

difficulty I face later, I always can find courage to conquer them. I believe I can make it this year.

My growth is deeply influenced by an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the

University of Pisa. Maybe people can find his shadow from me. From him, I learned a lot. I know the

meaning of duty from his devotion to teaching. His humor makes me more optimistic. His

reasonable way of thinking helps me mold my thinking style. The most importance is that from him,

I know how to get along with others. The main sense is to give.

In the times of early childhood, the dream seed of being a lawyer is in my heart. I hope I could

contribute to maintaining the fairness and justice of the society through law. On the one hand, I can

make use of my expertise knowledge to help people mediate their conflicts and disputes, creating

a harmonious society. On the other hand, there are many people needing legal aid. I can defend

legitimate rights and interests for innocent, so as to protect them from unnecessary injury. By

popularizing legal knowledge, more and more people can obey law and apply the law. To realize

this dream, I still need to enlarge my legal knowledge.

lose your will when you are in adversity. Before, I didn’t take anything seriously since I thought

everything would be mine. But this sentence changed me. I understand gradually that failure

always follows pride. This motivational sentence has become my motto. It tells me what kind of

attitude I should take when facing success and failure. When getting success, I could keep calm to

consider the next step. When meeting difficulty, I could find where the holes are and take active

measures instead of being demoralized.

In my essay, to attract readers’ attention and help them better understand, I choose many

metaphoric and interesting words to engage readers’ imagination, such as independent thought,

an open mind, intensive thought. I choose the way of showing rather than telling such as the

conversation between me and the handicapped man. For example, He pointed at his broken legs

and asked me: “Are there any possibilities for me to ever be an athlete?” I froze for a second. “Oh,
