PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent substance capable of exhibiting a

high luminous brightness.

SOLUTION: The fluorescent substance comprises a compound represented by the

formula: xM1O-M2O-yM3O2containing an activator, wherein M1denotes at least one

selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sr and Ba; M2denotes Mg and/or Zn;

M3denotes Si and/or Ge; x is a value in the range of 4 to 6; and y is a value in the range of

2 to 4. A fluorescent substance is represented by the formula: M15(1-z)EuzM2M33O12,

wherein M1, M2and M3are the same as in the above; and z is a vlue in the range of 0.0001

to 0.3. The fluorescent substance has the same type of crystal structure as Bredigite.
