高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——恐音
症
——改编自Have you ever heard of misophonia?
Misophonia, or a strong dislike of certain sounds, is a
condition that affects some people. Despite being doubted by
experts, sufferers of misophonia experience intense emotional
and psychological responses to certain noises. While
non-sufferers may just find these sounds as an inconvenience
or distraction, misophonia can cause severe anxiety, panic, and
even physical reactions.
For someone with misophonia, the sound of chewing food
from a loved one could trigger a panic attack and their
fight-or-flight reflex, causing them to want to flee or lash out
in fury. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this condition
although methods such as tinnitus retraining therapy,
cognitive behavioural therapy, and counselling can help
manage it.
Misophonia can lead to isolation as sufferers avoid places
with lots of noises like restaurants or move away when they
feel like lashing out at someone due to their breathing. This
condition also causes people to use coping strategies that
keep others at a distance.
If you see someone who appears to fly into a rage because
of a sound that is driving them crazy, it might be a sign of
misophonia. These individuals are not just irritated by the
sound but struggle to manage their symptoms and are trying
their best to cope with the condition. It’s essential to
understand and provide support to those who have
misophonia rather than dismissing their feelings or actions as
something petty or trivial.
