1. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on Printed
Book or E-book. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
1. 随着网络不断深入人们生活,电子图书逐渐受到大众欢迎
2. 与传统图书相比,电子图书具有的优势
3. 我的看法
答案:
Printed Book or E-book
As the computer and Internet technology heads the way into everyone's daily life, the
printed world gradually loses its dominance. You can almost certainly see more people
staring at Internet terminals than flipping through printed books.
Unlike printed books, you can purchase, download e-books you want to read in few
minutes and start reading them without leaving your room. Besides, e-books take up
less space. You can store hundreds and thousands of them in your computer. With
modern technology, you can read e-books anywhere at any time, such as on the bus,
train, airplane or while waiting in line. Last but not least, e-books are eco-friendly by
not consuming paper, ink, etc.
However, in no way does it signal the end of printed books. Actually, not all books
are available in e-book form. And the high cost of an e-book reader prevents much of
the world's population from using e-books. Moreover, the rapidly changing
technologies put old devices out of use, thus lead to more waste and pollution.

There’s one fruit that can help feed hungry people who live in warm and wet areas in
the world. It’s called a breadfruit, but it doesn’t look like bread. It’s a round green fruit
with an unsmooth skin on the outside. When it’s ready to eat, the skin looks a little
yellow and brown. It doesn’t have much taste, and most people say it’s a lot like a
potato.
The breadfruit is a good source of food because one tree can produce around 250 fruits
each year. The tree is also easy to take care of. But the biggest reason why breadfruit
may be the answer to feeding poor people is the healthy ingredients that this fruit
provides.
It may be a fruit, but it has a lot of healthy ingredients like meat, which is important
especially in poor countries where people can’t afford meat. The biggest problem may
be for the people to accept this fruit as part of their cultural diet.

Last week, 54 people were killed when a teenager exploded bombs near a wedding in
Turkey. Twenty-two of them were children under the age of 14. A lot of women were
also killed because when the bomb exploded, women were doing a traditional wedding
ceremony of painting their hands and feet with a temporary ink near the bomb area.
Many people in these areas have become too familiar with this type of violence, but
everybody was surprised when there were so many innocent children who died or when
a child was going to do the killings. It used to be only adults, mostly men, but later
more women were involved in this kind of bomb killing. Many were still very young.
Now, even children have joined them. It’s simply unbelievable! Whenever people think
of this, they would ask this question, “Who persuaded these children to do the killing?”

M: Hey, I was cleaning the basement. Look at this funny old picture I found!
W: Oh yeah, that was from the graduation dance back in high school. That was so
much fun, getting all dressed up and fancy. I wore a beautiful blue gown and my
friend Cindy wore green.
M: No, Cindy was wearing a yellow dress; it was my partner who wore green. You
girls were so silly and noisy, walking proudly in your fancy dresses, acting like
princesses from some fairy tales.
W: Nonsense, we were calm and quiet.
M: Yeah, sure, and graceful, too, with your expert dancing! How many poor men did
you trip up on the dance floor?
W: I didn’t trip anyone up. It was Cindy that kept messing up and knocking her
partner over.
M: Oh right, you only stepped on your partner’s feet. I remembered the poor guy
couldn’t play soccer for two weeks because his toes were so sore!
W: Hahaha, yeah, I had forgotten all about that. I wasn’t all to blame though, he
dropped me right on my back during one of the dances. I’ve never been so sore and so
attractive all at once! And what about you? You were just as clumsy as the rest of us!

M: I can’t wait for Thanksgiving! Only two more days!
W: I didn’t realize Thanksgiving was such an important holiday for you.
M: Oh, it’s the biggest day of the year for my family! Everyone at our parents’ home:
my two sisters, my brother, all our families – it’s at least 23 people — More than 30 if
aunts and uncles come over!
W: Wow, sounds like a lot of people for one house!
M: Yea, but we love it! We move all the furniture out of the big living room and set up
four long tables so we can all eat together.
W: Must be quite a wonderful dinner! Is it all the classics?
M: You bet! We have two whole turkeys, and 10 pounds of sweet potatoes! Not to
mention heaps of mom’s famous fruit salad. Aunt Peggy brings three meat pies and
Uncle Charlie brings three apple pies.
W: Haha, that’s so traditional! You guys are like the original Americans two hundred
years ago!
M: What do you do, if it’s not “so traditional?”
W: Thanksgiving is never big for my family. My parents live in Florida on the other
side of the country, so, my sister, her husband and I all go out to eat. We try a new
restaurant every year. Last year was Greek – this year we’re trying Mexican food!
M: Um … okay – but don’t you miss the turkey and the pie?
W: Not really. I do sometimes miss the pie … So, the last few years I’ve baked an apple
pie – and after dinner the three go back to my place and have apple pie with ice cream.

What's the secret of eternal youth? Please try a tomato! At this rate, scientists will have to come up
with a better description for the tomato than mere "super food".
While it has long been credited with preventing some cancers, the fruit now appears to have two
more healthy-giving benefits. A study has found that tomatoes have got protection against sunburn
and help keeping the skin looking youthful. Tomatoes could provide a cheap and easy way of
improving health. Researchers recommend two tomato-based meals a day for health. Possible
menus include a glass of tomato juice with breakfast and a salad later or tomato soup for lunch and
pasta with a tomato sauce for dinner. To test the fruit's ability to protect the skin, ten volunteers were
asked to eat five tablespoons of tomato paste mixed with olive oil every day for three months.
Another ten had a daily dose of olive oil—minus the tomato paste. Tests showed the tomato-eaters
were a third better protected against sunburn. Other tests suggested the tomato-based diet had
increased production of collagen, the protein that keeps skin supple. If that were not enough, the
fruit also protects our elements of cells which turn the food we eat into energy. The fruit is likely to
contribute to improved skin health, which in turn may have an anti-ageing effect.
The researchers stressed, however, that their findings were not an excuse to throw away the sun
cream. People should not think tomatoes in any way can replace sun creams.

When US spacewoman Joan Higginbotham is not flying and working in space, she
might be found somewhere on earth giving a speech. Higginbotham, who grew up in
Chicago and became an engineer before joining NASA, that is the National Air and
Space Administration, gives about a dozen speeches a year. Each speech is different
because she tailors her remarks to each audience. Through interviews and E-mails, she
finds out in advance her listeners' educational level and what information they want to
know. On the subject of space walks, for example, audiences vary in their interests and
how much complexity they can comprehend. To elementary school children,
Higginbotham may discuss a problem that many kids want to know about. "How do
spacemen in a spacesuit eat, drink, and go to the bathroom?" Her answer is "the
spacesuit is really a small spacecraft with room for food and water-containers, and a
waste-collection system." To a high school audience, she might satisfy a curiosity that
often arises in her pre-speech interviews with students who obviously have seen many
science fiction movies. "Do spacemen carry weapons in case they encounter enemies
in space?" Her answer is "No." To scientists, she might provide technical details on
such topics as the design of spacesuits that protects spacemen from the deadly
temperature extremes of space. Just as elaborate preparation is required for success in
space, Higginbotham says that it's important for speakers to learn as much as possible
about their listeners before a speech because every audience is different.

Most of us will spend decades getting our finances ready for retirement. But as we
get closer to retirement, we also need a plan for what we will do in retirement.
The transition from full-time work to retirement is difficult for some people. It is not
easy to jump from working all day to a completely unstructured day. Perhaps you can
give back to the community and volunteer in an organization that you believe in. This
will help with the retirement transition, and many organizations need a helping hand.
You will have a lot more free time in retirement, so it is the perfect time to pursue
your hobbies and interests and try new things. In some cases, you might be able to turn
your hobby into a micro-business. If you like playing music, perhaps you can teach
music lessons. This will give you a little bit of extra income and help keep you
interested.
Some people don't like retirement after a lifetime of structure. Give yourself a year or
two to settle into retirement. If you don't like being idle, try getting back into the
workforce again. Perhaps you can try consulting or a part-time job. If you have the
resources, you can start a small business or a joint venture with friends.
There are many useful things you can do after retirement, and there is no need to stay
home all day and watch TV. Retirement means you can do whatever you want to, even
if that means getting a job.

A rat or pigeon might not be the obvious choice to tend to someone who is sick, but
these creatures have some superior skills that could help the treatment of human
diseases.
Pigeons are often seen as dirty birds and an urban nuisance, but they are just the latest
in a long line of animals that have been found to have abilities to help humans. Despite
having a brain no bigger than the tip of your index finger, pigeons have a very
impressive visual memory. Recently it was shown that they could be trained to be as
accurate as human at detecting breast cancer in images.
Rats are often associated with spreading disease rather than preventing it, but this
long-tailed animal is highly sensitive. Inside a rat’s nose are up to 1,000 different types
of olfactory receptors (嗅觉感受器), whereas humans only have 100 to 200 types. This
gives rats the ability to detect slight smells. As a result, some rats are being put to work
to detect TB (肺结核). When the rats detect the smell, they stop and rub their legs to
indicate a sample is infected.
Traditionally, a hundred samples would take lab technicians more than two days to
examine, but for a rat it takes less than 20 minutes. This rat detection method doesn’t
rely on specialist equipment. It is also more accurate—the rats are able to find more TB
infections and, therefore, save more lives.
A) associated B) examine C) indicate D) nuisance
E) peak F) preventing G) prohibiting H) sensitive
I) slight J) specify K) superior L) suspicious
M) tip N) treated O) visual
Directions: There are two passages in this section. Read the
passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Scientists and others in the psychological, sociological fields have asserted that
humans use maybe 0.01 to 0.10 percent of our brain. Here is an easier way of
understanding what that means.
First let us make it clear that mechanically you use 100 percent of your brain.
Enhancing usage to its maximum is another subject. So when someone puts a
percentage of use on the brain they do not mean that the other, say 90 percent,
is not active or useless.
Think of it this way. Let’s say your brain is a stereo (立体声音响). When you are
using your stereo you are using 100 percent of it. If the volume knob (旋钮) is
set at a 2 level, then you are not getting the same usage when compared to
turning the volume knob to 8 or 10.
So what scientists are trying to get across to us is we have a lot more room in
our cranium (头盖骨) to fill. We have more volume to boost. We are not even
close to tapping our potential of brain power.
There is no physical data to determine in clear evidence the amount of usage
the human brain has. However, there has been data that has shown that people
have increased their brain power. Then there are the people who show mental
abilities that are very rare. Some people with autism (自闭症), for example, have
had the ability to calculate very high levels of math equations (方程式) without
ever having learned how.
There are also more and more variables we are learning about the brain.
Studies suggest that even though our brain is one as a whole, we evidently get
production out of separate parts of the brain for different mental tasks. We have
all heard of the right brain/left brain references for example.
So regardless of how you want to interpret the brain usage by percentage, the
fact is that it is the most amazing gift we have. A computer is nothing compared
to the human brain. And we can build upon our ability to get more out of it. So
turn up the volume button and get the brain working.

express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Some explode with anger, and
scream and shout. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or
will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
Many doctors think that repressing anger is more dangerous to a person’s
health than expressing it. They say that when a person is angry, the brain gives
out the same hormones (荷尔蒙) as that are produced during tense and
nervous situations. They speed the heart rate and raise blood pressure, so the
person feels excited and ready to act. Repressing these feelings will only make
the feelings continue, and this can lead to many medical problems. To prevent
these problems, these doctors suggest letting the anger out by expressing it
freely. But recently some other doctors question this. They say that people who
express anger repeatedly and violently become, in fact, more but not less angry.
And this could cause medical problems.
However, some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be
dangerous. They believe that those who express anger strongly may be more
likely to develop heart diseases, and that those who keep their anger inside
may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is to learn how to deal with anger. The first step is to
admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, and then
to decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, do not
express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down, and
express yourself calmly and reasonably. Doctors also say that a good way to
deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry, for
laughter is much healthier than anger.
