It is one of the most famous books in the world; yet it has no story and
no interesting characters, no exciting beginning and no satisfying ending And
yet this book keeps being printed and it keeps growing! At its last printing, it
was 20 volume(卷),with nearly 22,000pages. This book is one of the most
famous dictionaries in the English-speaking world, the Oxford English
Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary or OED for short, began in 1857 as just an idea of a group of
people who thought the word needed an English-language dictionary to show the history of
English words from 1150 CE to the present. It wasn't until the late 1870s,however, when James
Murray joined the project that it began to grow. Murray planned for a dictionary of about 6,400
pages in four volumes, completed in 10 years.
James Murray (1837-1915) did most of his work in a small metal building called the
Scriptorium. That small building. hot in summer and cold in winter, was the place where
Murray and his assistants( 助 手 )collected millions of pieces of paper, each one with a word
and an example sentence or phrase written on and his assistants worked hard, but
after five years they had only reached the word ant!
It was not until 1928 that the dictionary was told to the public completed and published:
1O volumes with over 400.000 words and phrases. James Murray did not live to see the
completion of his life's work; he passed away in 1915,over ten years before OED came out.
As soon as the dictionary was published, however, the editors started to
update( 更新)it!In1933, the Oxford English dictionary was reprinted in 12 volumes. Between
1972 and 1986, four more volumes were added with new technical and scientific vocabulary
and words from other English-speaking countries, such as Canada, the USA. Australia, New
Zealand, and South 1989,the entire (整个的)dictionary was reprinted in 20 volumes
Three years later, all 20 volumes were put onto the entire dictionary is available online
today.
With about 600,000 words and three million quotations( 引 语 )from over 1000 years of
English, the OED not only records where the English language has come from but has also
become an important part of he history of English-speaking cultures around the world.

Memory of Old Beijing
Set in an old teahouse, the play Teahouse is typical of Lao She's art that tries to provide
panoramic(全景的) view of Chinese history and culture in their change from traditional to modem
society.
From the Qing Dynasty and the Republican Revolution to the birth of the People's Republic
of China, Teahouse, published in1957, crosses 50 year of Chinese history and shows more than 60
characters in all walks of life. Wang Lifa, owner of the Yutai Teahouse, serves tea for half a
century and realizes that no matter how many years goes by, people finally stay the same.
Teahouse has been performed in Europe and Japan, and has been translated into many
play also remains one of the most welcomed plays of the Beijing People 's Ant
Theater.
One reason that Teahouse remains so popular is the setting Beijing. Lao She(1899-1966) was
born and grew up in Beijing. Best known for his lively descriptions of common people's lives,
especially of poor people, which reflect the social reality of the time, Lao She was also good at
describing the local life through the use of his special sense of humor and the raw dialect(地道方
言) of the capital. Camel Xiangzi is another famous story of his. It told the tragic story of a
rickshaw puller(人力车夫) called XiangZi in Beijing. He failed to improve his life no matter
how hard he was. According to Lao She’s stories, we can experience how Beijing used to look and
feel and we can still recall the old Beijing,
Today there is a Beijing teahouse inspired by Lao She's play that attracts visitors from all
over the world. In 1988, Lao She's Teahouse was opened in Beijing. It's a popular place for
tourists to enjoy a “big -bowl tea”and a real royal(皇室的) dessert. The teahouse also has
showings of Beijing Opera and guzheng performances. The building itself stands as a memory of
the old Beijing teahouses and the Chinese culture.

Wind is a powerful force. Wind energy may cause the great waves(浪)in the world's oceans.
Winds can help create powerful storms, but wind is a force you can’t see but can surely feel. Its
power can be used to create electricity for cities and the
countryside.
Wind can also show people's feeling or ideas in American
English. Let's start with a simple one. If you run like the wind,
you can run very fast. After running, sometimes you can feel full of energy. The runner gets what
we call a second wind. We use it when we are tired, but then get more energy to finish something.
For example, sometimes I feel tired after work. But after a short rest and a cup of tea, I get my
second wind.
If you are doing something difficult, it is good to have the wind at your back. In this way, it is
easier to go forward. It's always more difficult to do something in a strong wind-unless you are
sailing.
Knowing the direction of the wind is the most important part of sailing. When wind fills a
sail, it makes the boat go faster. If you take the wind out of someone's sails, you prevent them
from reaching their goals. You create a barrier(障碍)or stop
them in some way. In life, it's lucky to have friends who want to fill your sails with wind and not
take it out.
Let’s turn from sailing to music. Many songwriters use the image(形象)of wind in their songs.
If something such as an idea is blowing in the wind, it is being discussed but has yet to be decided.
When a singer sings “you don' t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”, he
means that you don't need someone in power to make sure of something for you. Just trust
yourself when you know which way the wind blows, you know what is going on.
Now you know which way the wind blows. Then how can you use them properly? First, read
them aloud and keep them in mind. Then, practice using them and test yourself. You know,
practice makes perfect.
Do you know which way the wind blows?
A powerful Wind energy is one of ___6___ of great waves, powerful storm and electricity.
force
nature
___8__ on About ◆A person who runs like the wind is a very fast runner
