第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项

中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)

Blowing our nose, burping (

打饱嗝)

after dinner and

pooping

(

便)

…Unpleasant as they are, these things, according to Live Science, make up “the

impolite science of the human body”.

Snot (

鼻涕)

Snot's job is to protect our body from harmful viruses. Quite often, dirt, ash, or

sand fill the air we breathe. But thankfully, snot stops these unhealthy things, which are

taken out of our nose when we blow it.

Apart from protecting our nose, snot can tell us whether we’re healthy or not

according to its appearance. When it’s clear and colorless, that’s a sign of good health. If

it turns green or yellow, however, it could be a sign that our body is being attacked by a

virus.

Gas

From drinking fizzy (

起泡的)

drinks to eating food, we often breathe in gases like

carbon dioxide, which end up in our stomach. Naturally, if we take in too much gas, our

stomach will be filled with pressure and we may suffer from pain and cramps(

痉挛

).To

stop this from happening, burping is an effective way to get these gases out of our

stomach.

Occasional burping benefits our body. However, burping too much isn’t a good

sign. That’s because it may suggest that we’re suffering from a digestive disorder.

Poop

Pooping is an extremely important function of the body. Every time we eat. the

food is passed through our digestive system. Once our body has taken everything it

needs from the food, it leaves our body as poop.

And though it’s gross, checking our poop after we go to the bathroom could tell us

more about our health.

1

What does it suggest if snot is green?

A

There might be dirt in it. B

It is protecting our nose.

C

You are very healthy. D

Your body might be fighting a virus.

2

What do we know about burping from the article?

A

Fizzy drinks make people burp more than food does.

B

People may suffer from pain or cramps when burping.

C

It makes gases like carbon dioxide leave our stomach.

D

Burping a lot can make digestive disorders go away.

3

What does the underlined word "gross’’ in the paragraph probably mean?

A

Unpleasant. B

Unnecessary.

C

Unimportant. D

Unhealthy.

A typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30 am. This is often even

earlier elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 am

in the US. The average teenager ideally needs eight to nine hours’ sleep each night, but

in reality a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of the problems arise because

our sleep patterns are not fixed, and they change as we grow.

So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring to get their

eight plus hours of sleep and react properly to their body’s natural rhythms (

规律

).

There has been a general shift over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is

not at the cost of teaching time (which has remained constant) but at the cost of natural

breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.

Later start times could help teens’ grades and health. This is mainly because it

makes the management of children easier. Supervising (

监管

) hundreds of children

“playing” requires effective staffing (

人员配备

). And there is always the fear that

behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and

strictly supervised must be better.

But this means that students barely have enough time to absorb what they were

doing in maths before suddenly they are thrust into ancient history. And teaching staff

also transit from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.

Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone involved. Anyway, it could

also lead to better achievement in teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the

mornings. For teachers, it could also mean a less stressful day all around and what could

be better than that?

1

Mow do schools often shorten the school day?

A

They increase more holidays.

B

They reduce the teaching time

C

They properly adjust children’ natural rhythms

D

They reduce children’s lunch time and lesson breaks

2

A

To reduce children’s excitement

B

To make children quickly take in what they learned

C

To supervise children more easily

D

To make children behave better in class

3

What can we learn about later school start time from the text?

A

It will add to the teacher’s pressure

B

It has always been there for 25 years

C

It benefits the students only

D

Parents may support it

4

What can be the best title for the text?

A

The benefits of a less stressful day

B

How to solve teenagers’ sleep problem

C

The benefits of later school start time

D

The reasons why teenagers sleep differently

What do Leonardo da Vincii, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein have in

common? They were all left-handed, along with other famous people including Brad Pitt

Prince William, and Barack Obama. In fact, an estimated 13 percent of the

world's population may be left-handed and still most people around the world are

right-handed.

What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed? As yet no

one really knows for sure. One simple idea suggests that people normally get

right-handedness from their parents. Studies have found that two right-handed parents

have only a 9.5 percent chance of having a left-handed child, whereas two left-handed

parents have a 26 percent chance of having a left-handed child. Another common theory

is that left-handed people suffer mild brain damage during birth, which makes them

left-handed. However, if this theory were true, it would not explain why the percentage

of left-banded people is so similar in every society, when birth conditions vary so much

from society to society.

Whatever the reasons behind it, people's attitudes toward left-handedness have

changed a lot over the years. Statistics show that although 13 percent of young people

(10-20 years old) are left-handed, only 6 percent of the elderly are left-handed.

Left-handed children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like

other children, but today people who are left-handed are no longer looked down on nor

are they considered abnormal. For most people today, either case is perfectly acceptable.

1

What makes one right-handed?

A

The environment.

B

Mild brain damage during birth.

C

The reason is uncertain.

D

Other people.

2

Why is the number of young people who are left-handed bigger than that of the

elderly?

A

Because the elderly are forced to become right-handed.

B

Because left-handed people are considered abnormal.

C

Because left-handedness can be cured.

D

Because the young are easily damaged.

3

What does the text mainly talk about?

A

Left-handed people are looked down upon.

B

General facts about left-handed people.

C

Some famous left-handed people.

D

The reasons why people are left-handed.

It is one of the oldest magic tricks in the book—a magician locks a

woman in a box, with her head and feet sticking out from either end, and saws (

) it in

half. But when she finally jumps out of the box, the woman is unharmed.

This trick was introduced nearly a century ago. It has been around for some time,

but it never goes wrong. Why is it so successful? The answer is simple: the human mind

is easily fooled.

Our brain processes the world around us based on information that sensory organs,

including the eyes, pick up. For instance, when we see a cow or a horse standing behind

a tree, we automatically “fill in” the part of the animal’s body that is hidden from our

sight. “So the brain is taking this kind of very sparse (

匮乏的

) information about the

world and it’s generating this rich world by filling in information,” Stephen Macknik, a

scientist at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona, US, told Science magazine.

But since our brains are filling in the gaps, sometimes they get it wrong. They tend

to be driven by our previous experiences and we expect things to go as they have in the

past even if sometimes they do not.

This tendency explains magicians’ success in fooling people with well-known coin

tricks. For example, when you see a magician throw a coin up and down in one hand

and then fake a coin thrown to the other hand, you would naturally believe that the coin

is in the other hand.

Apart from the information gaps, magicians also use the “blind spots” theory when

doing their shows.

The most well-known experiment demonstrating this theory is called the “invisible

gorilla (

大猩猩

)”, in which volunteers watch a video of two basketball teams. They are

asked to count how many times the teams wearing white shirts pass the ball. In the

meantime, a person dressed as a gorilla walks onto the court. But shockingly, half of the

viewers don’t notice the gorilla, even when they appear to be looking directly at it.

Magicians employ this tactic (

招数

), what they call “misdirection”, in almost every

one of their acts. They direct our attention somewhere else using comedy and music,

which can make us miss stuff during the performance.

1

The magic trick is mentioned in the first paragraph to ________.

A

introduce the steps of the magic trick

B

prove magic tricks seldom go wrong

C

reveal how magic tricks are designed

D

get us to wonder how magicians trick the mind
