教材分析
本课是阅读课，介绍了由于人类活动的原因，加剧了地球物种灭亡的速度，地球
将面临第六次大灭亡，并提出及时止损的措施。
教学目标
在本课学习结束时，学生能够：用所学知识谈论如何保护动植物，如何保护我们
的地球。
教学重难点

教学过程
Step 1 Activate and share
1. What can you see from this picture?
2. What caused those animals and plants to be extinct?
3. What does the word “extinction” mean?
4. Can you predict what the text is about according to the title “The Sixth Extinction”?
设计意图：根据所给图片，提炼关键信息，思考这些动植物灭亡的原因。
Step 2 Read and explore
1. Read the text and answer the questions.
设计意图：快速阅读，了解文本关键信息。
2. Read the text and complete the notes.
设计意图：根据图表要求，查找与extinction相关的信息。
3. Based on the diagram, talk about the different aspects of extinctions.
设计意图：根据图表信息，进行语篇输出练习。
4. Read again and answer the questions.

Step 3 Think and share
1. Use different colored pens to highlight at least one example for each of the four
elements listed below in different colors. Then find out:
(1) What typical language is used?
(2) What text type is this piece of writing?
(3) What is its communicative purpose?
2. What writing methods does the writer use to convince readers? Are you convinced?
Why or why not?
设计意图：回读语篇，标注语篇中的事实、原因、看法/预测以及解决办法表达，
并总结语言表达特征。了解写作体裁、写作目的及写作方法等方面的知识。最后
谈谈你对这篇文章写作手法的看法。
Step 4 Discuss in groups

Step 5 Assignment
Watch the video “When will the next mass extinction occur” carefully, and take notes
of the main ideas. Then compare with the text “The Sixth Extinction” to find out the
similarities and differences between the video and the text.
设计意图：观看视频“When will the next mass extinction occur”，记录主要信息，
然后和所学第一课“The Sixth Extinction”课文内容对比，找出视频和课文之间的
异同点。通过观看相关主题的视频学习，拓展视野和思维角度。通过比较，客观
分析各种信息之间的内在关联和差异，发现产生差异的各种原因，从中推断出它
们之间形成的逻辑关系，并形成自己的观点。
