What’s best to read this year?

Secrets I Know

(Random House Children’s Books, ages 3-7)

This tale written by Kallie George and pictured by Paola Zakimi follows a young

girl and her little friend as they move from rain to sunshine, from pleasant loneliness to

sweet friendship, and finally from adventures on earth to an exploration of the sky

above. The colors of Zakimi’s pencildrawings are calming and George’s poetic text tells

her story with simple language.

Pandora

(Clarion Books, ages 3-7)

The award-winning author Victoria Turnbull tells the story of a little fox Pandora.

Pandora lives alone. She makes herself a handsome home, but no one ever comes to visit.

Then one day something falls from the sky -- a bird with a broken wing. Little by little,

the bird helps Pandora feel less lonely. Turnbull’s watercolor and colored pencil

drawings make this story of friendship and growth an atmospheric delight.

Prince

and Pirate

(G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Younger Readers, ages 5-8)

A different kind of friendship is described in this book, by Charlotte Gunnufson

with pictures by Mike Lowery. Prince and Pirate are a pair of mismatched fish put into

the same aquarium

(水族馆

). At first it seems that they’ll never learn to be friends. It’s

only when both take pity on a frightened dogfish that they learn the benefits of

cooperation, and soon all three fish become good friends.

The

Giant Jumperee

(Dinal Books, ages 3-5)

The story was written by the award-winning British author Julia Donaldson. When

Rabbit hears a loud voice bellowing

(吼叫)

threateningly from inside a cave, he gathers

Cat, Bear and Elephant to help him decide what to do. But it’s Mama Frog who

fearlessly confronts

(面对)

the unknown creature. Helen Oxenbury’s soft watercolors

creat a beautiful countryside and her characterizations of the animals are impressive.

In a study published in the U. S. journal

Science

, researchers from the

Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS) and the University of Florida

identified the chemical combinations and genetic recipe for better tomato flavor(

味道

).

“In recent years, consumers often complain that the modern tomato is less flavorful

than it once was” said co-principal researcher Sanwen Huang. “Our results provide a

practical road map for breeding tomato varieties with better flavor.”

For the study, a 170-person consumer group was created to evaluate 160 tomatoes

representing 101 varieties, based on qualities such as “overall liking” and “flavor

degree”. The results pointed to dozens of chemical compounds of interest, and further

research using a statistical model discovered 33 flavor compounds connected with

consumer liking, such as glucose(

葡萄糖

). The reason why modern tomatoes don’t taste

good anymore is that a total of 13 of these flavor-associated compounds “were

significantly reduced in modern varieties,” their paper wrote. Moreover, the researchers

found that smaller fruit tended to have greater sugar content, suggesting that “selection

for more sizable tomatoes has cost sweetness and flavor”.

Based on this knowledge, Huang and Professor Harry Klee of the University of

Florida studied the whole genomes of 398 varieties of tomato, identifying about 250

positions of genes on a chromosome(

染色体

), which controlled tomato flavor.

“We’re just fixing what has been damaged over the last half century to push them

back to where they were a century ago,” said Klee in a statement. “We can make the

supermarket tomato taste noticeably better.” Klee said new tomato varieties with better

flavor could be ready in three to four years. In addition, “the genes and pathways

identified here in the tomato almost certainly point to pathways worth researching for

improvement of flavor quality in other fruit crops,” they wrote.

1

According to the text, the study ________.

A

was carried out just through a survey

B

was conducted by Chinese researchers themselves

C

was completely focused on the genes of different tomatoes

D

was done with the background of declining flavor of tomatoes

2

The researchers have found that ________ in the study.

A

bigger tomatoes are much sweeter

B

some genetic positions affect the taste of tomatoes

C

some chemical compounds make tomatoes less tasty

D

a total of 13 flavor-associated compounds make tomatoes appealing in taste

3

What is the influence of the study according to the text?

A

The study lays the foundation for further researches to improve other fruit crops’

flavor.

B

The study makes it possible for us to have noticeably more tasty tomatoes next year.

C

The study provides a road for where to plant tomatoes with better flavor.

D

The study has fixed all the genes of existing tomatoes.

Travelers to a new city are often encouraged to take a bus tour. The

thinking is that they can later return to the places that attracted them, but that’s

nonsense! What you see from the inside of a fast-moving bus is sanitized (

清洁的

) and

unreal , entirely removed from the real sights, sounds, and smells outside.

The best way to experience any destination is by foot, without an itinerary,

wandering where your spirit leads you. Even in the largest cities, the savvy(

资深的

)

traveler plunges into the very center of town and walks down the nearest street,

experiencing the actual life of the people while looking into the grocery stores and

courtyard. You eventually get to many of the same sites that are on the bus route--the

museums, the monuments, the city hall--but you will have witnessed so much more

because you will have felt the contemporary life of the city you’re visiting.

“But what if I get lost?” people ask. No one ever gets permanently lost in a major

city. Eventually, a trolley or bus passes with the words “Central Station” on its front and

you can easily return to the center of town. Besides, the most wonderful things can

happen if you do get lost, such as stopping at a sidewalk cafe to sit and relax and then

asking directions from the locals at the next table. Hopefully , your trip may be

attractive by this encounter. Here are a few ways to make the most of your travels:

Know before you go. Before you depart, spend time in a library or bookstore,

learning about the history and culture of your destination so you will better understand

the place you’re visiting .

Move around like a local. Use the local subways, trams and buses. You’ll not only

save money, you’ll learn how people live there , and you’ll gain a realistic perspective of

the city.

Check the bulletin board. Bulletin boards list free lectures, concerts, workshops

and social gatherings, giving you a chance to join or meet the area’s most dynamic

residents.

Take a walking tour. If you must book a guided tour, select the nonstandard ,

inexpensive kinds conducted on foot.

So, the next time you feel lured by a sightseeing bus tour, save your money and

instead, wander around on your own. I promise you a time you’ll remember fondly.

1

What does the author think of a bus tour?

A

It is reasonable. B

It is fast.

C

You can’t be exposed to the outside world. D

It is noisy.

2

What does the underlined word in Para 2 mean?

A

a guided book for travelers. B

a car.

C

a bag. D

something to eat.

3

Why is traveling by foot one of the best choices to experience the city?

A

Because you can buy anything you like.

B

Because you can get to the same destination as the bus tour.

C

Because you can experience the real life in person.

D

Because you can go to museums and city halls where the bus doesn’t get.

4

How do you make the most of your travel? Which statement is not true?

A

Read some introduction of the place where you want to go.
