English Learning
Abstract: This article is intended to explore the influences caused by gender-based differences in
English learning and the relevant strategies. Domestic and overseas researchers indicate that there are
gender differences in English learning which have great influences on students' learning effects. This
article systematically analyzes the gender differences between male learners and female learners in
physiology, motivation of learning, learning interest, character, self-awareness and perception of
patterns. In order to make English learning effective, learner should be made to develop their strengths
and circumvent their weaknesses, thus, the optimum efficiency of English learning would be achieved.

1. Introduction
In recent years, all aspects of traditional education have been pounded by the reform
of basic education with brand-new educational idea; English teaching reform is one of
them. “Basic education curriculum reform (try out)” explicitly states that teachers should
respect students' personality, pay attention to individual differences, meet different
students' learning needs, and create the educational environment that can guide students to
take part in educational activities actively. Teachers should arouse students’ enthusiasm
for study, improve their attitude and abilities with which students can master and apply
the knowledge, and teachers should make every student get full development. This also
reflects the guiding ideology of the “student-oriented” teaching method, which is revealed
in the new curriculum reform.
Therefore we should study the individual differences of learners. For many years,
English teachers generally have such a feeling that the overall performances of male
learners are worse than female learners in English learning. But if we talk about the
1
reason, the most correct answer is that the learning attitude of female learners are correct,
and the female learners are more interested in language learning. For a long time,
educators in our country carry out the combined teaching mode to both men and women
that male and female learners study in the same classroom. Besides paying attention to the
overall teaching, teachers should also focus on individuals. But few take into account the
different needs of male and female learners. In other words, teachers rarely consider the
impact that is caused by gender differences. Therefore, with the new curriculum reform
today, as language teachers, it is necessary for them to implement the new curriculum
reform in language teaching sufficiently.
H
ow do the different genders and different English learning styles influence English
learning and what relevant strategies should English teachers take? In order to improve
learning academic performance in English when they are learning English, English
teachers should according to different genders let both male and female learners foster
their strengths and circumvent their weakness.
2 Domestic and overseas researches
In social linguistics, gender and language difference is the hot spot that many social
linguists research. Early in the 1920s, Sapir discovered in California Yana that language
contains a special form that only belongs to female learners. Hass observed in Koasati (a
kind of American Indian language that southwest Louisiana SuoBu use),that male
learners often send in the verb ending, while female learners didn't. In the category of
English grammar, Brend (1975) says that when speaking, male and female learners didn't
use the same tone. Compared with male learners, female learners use more polite and
more surprising or joyful tone. Ronald LabOV (wardhaugh 2000) in New York's research
also shows that the adult language has significant gender differences. Gender differences
according to the domestic and overseas researchers are to be introduced in the following
part.
First, in the relationship between gender and learning, there are also a lot of related
researches. Michael Gurion (2003) found in his study that female learners who are one
