Anthem: O Canada

O Canada!

Our home and native land!True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand

on guard for thee "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100

years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée,

a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir

Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have

appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was

written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes

changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons.

The French lyrics remain unaltered。

Saint George (patron saint of England) edged in white superimposed on the

diagonal red cross of Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), which is

superimposed on the diagonal white cross of Saint Andrew (patron saint of

Scotland); properly known as the Union Flag, but commonly called the

Union Jack; the design and colors (especially the Blue Ensign) have been

the basis for a number of other flags including other Commonwealth

territories。

The National Anthem,

God save our gracious Queen,Long

live our noble Queen,God save the Queen!Send her victorious,Happy and

Glorious,Long to reign over us;God save the Queen!O Lord our God arise,Scatter her

enemiesAnd make them fall;Confound their politics,Frustrate their knavish tricks,On

Thee our hopes we fix,Oh, save us all!Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to

pour;Long may she reign;May she defend our laws,And ever give us causeTo sing

with heart and voice,God save the Queen! Not in this land alone,But be God's mercies

known,From shore to shore!Lord make the nations see,That men should brothers

be,And form one family,The wide world overFrom every latent foe,From the

assassins blow,God save the Queen!O'er her thine arm extend,For Britain's sake

defend,Our mother, prince, and friend,God save the Queen!

It is also among some of the world's national

anthems that are based on a poem, along with the Hymn to Liberty, the national

anthem of both Greece and the Republic of Cyprus. The lyrics come from "Defence of

Fort McHenry",

a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet,

Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British

Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War

of 1812,"The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the Navy

in 1889, and by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national

anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 (46 Stat. 1508, codified at

36 U.S.C. § 301), which was signed by President Herbert Hoover。
