3 Personal history, educational机会opportunity ,individual 两难困境

dilemmas — none of these can 阻止inhibit a strong spirit 致力于 committed to

success. No task is too hard. No amount of preparation is too long or too difficult.

Take the example of two of the most 博学的 scholarly scientists of our age, Albert

Einstein and Thomas Edison. Both faced 巨大的immense 障碍obstacles and

极端的extreme,过激的 批评criticism. Both were called "slow to learn" and written

off as 白痴idiots by their teachers. Thomas Edison ran away from school

because his teacher 鞭笞whipped him 屡次,再三repeatedly for asking too

many questions. Einstein didn't speak 流利地fluently until he was almost nine

years old and was such a poor student that some thought he was unable to learn.

Yet both boys' parents believed in them. They worked 强烈地intensely each day

with their sons, and the boys learned to never 避开,绕过bypass the long hours

of hard work that they needed to succeed. In the end, both Einstein and Edison 克

服overcame their childhood 迫害persecution and went on to achieve 壮观的,

伟大的magnificent discoveries that 有益于benefit the entire world today.

5 Just like Churchill and Lincoln, only those who "keep their eyes on the 奖,目

标p、prize ", those who 拥护,维护uphold a committed and 全神贯注的,注意

力集中的focused will and spirit, will find their 努力endeavors successful. Many

artists, 政治家statesmen, writers and inventors have had the same experience.

They achieved 繁荣,兴旺prosperity because they拥有possessed a 凶猛的,激

烈的fierce will to keep preparing and working and a 热情,激情 passion to

succeed. They 实现,达到 attained success, not because it was easy, but because

they had the will to overcome 深刻的profound obstacles and to work 勤奋地

diligently in the 追求 pursuit of their goals.

7 Many people simply say that they want something, but they do not 花费,付

出expend the 大量的substantial effort required to achieve it. Many people let the

威胁threat of failure stop them from trying with all of their heart. The secret of

success is based upon a burning inward desire — a 茁壮的, 精力充沛的robust

fierce will and focus — that 提供燃料,刺激fuels the决心determination to act,

to keep preparing, to keep going even when we are tired and fail. As a wise saying

goes: "It's not how many times you fall down that 重要matters . It's how many

times you get back up that makes success!"

4 The little girl who would become the world's most 有魅力的magical actress

began as an 无名的,匿名的anonymous refugee 面临confronting life's horrors

and 脆弱fragility firsthand. But she refused to allow her spirit to be 折磨,使痛苦

afflicted by the 绝望的 desperate real ity of her young life. Instead, she 超越,战胜

transcended those 挑战challenges but never forgot what it felt like to suffer, to be

hungry, alone and helpless.

10 She turned down three million dollars to pen her 自传autobiography and

instead accepted one dollar a year in the more 需责任心的,认真的

conscientious role as 大使diplomat for UNICEF. For seven months out of each of

her last five years, she and Robby left the peace and beauty in their 舒适的

cozy home to踏上embark on 主动提供的outreach trips into some of the most

difficult places on earth. From Bangladesh, Sudan, India, Vietnam, Kenya, Ethiopia,

Central and South America, to Somalia, Audrey Hepburn traveled 代表 UNICEF,

making over 50 情感上 emotionally 耗尽,用光draining and 身体上physically,

对人身来说 dangerous使命,任务missions into 荒凉,无希望的bleak 目的地

destinations to raise world 关注,意识 awareness of wars and 干旱droughts. Having

been a 受害者victim of war, she understood the 幸福blessing of being the 受益者

beneficiary of food, clothing, and, most of all, hope.

11 Audrey felt it was 罪恶的wicked that billions of children were 剥夺

deprived of simple joys and 溺水,深陷于drowned in 压倒性的,巨大

的 overwhelming misery. She believed deeply in the 理念ideology that all

people share in the duty to care for those in need. Audrey Hepburn was always

ready to lead by example. She said: "When you deny childhood, you deny life." She

saw UNICEF's work as an 不可分割的,必要组成部分的integral , 神圣的sacred force

in people's lives and said of UNICEF's results, "Anyone who doesn't believe in 奇迹

miracles is not a 现实主义者.realist"

15 The 雄伟,庄严majesty of Audrey Hepburn's spirit of social 责任

responsibility and 奉献dedication lives on in her words: "Remember, if you ever

need a 帮助的helping hand, it's at the end of your arm. As you get older,

remember you have another hand: The first is to help yourself, the second is to

help others." And "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips,

speak only words of 善良kindness; and for 镇定自信poise, walk with the 了解,知

道knowledge that you are never alone."

6 The larger lesson, though, is that our thoughts are 充斥,充满saturated with

the familiar. The brain is a space of near 无限的infinite 可能性possibility, which

means that it spends a lot of time and energy choosing what not to notice. As a

result, creativity is 买卖,交换traded away for 效率efficiency ; we think in finite,

字面的,缺乏想象力的literal prose, not symbolic 诗歌,诗句 verse . A bit of

distance, however, helps 解开,放松loosen the 认知的cognitive chains that 束

缚,监押 imprison us, making it easier to 混合mingle the new with the old; the

世俗的mundane is 理解 grasped from a 稍微,稍稍地 slightly more 抽象的

absorb 视角,观点perspective . According to research, the experience of an 外

国的,奇异的exotic culture 赋予endows us with a valuable思维开放

open-mindness, making it easier to realize that even a 琐碎的,平凡的trivial thing

can have 多重的,多个的multiple meanings. Consider the act of leaving food on

the plate: In China, this is often seen as a 赞美,表扬compliment , a signal that

the host has provided enough to eat. But in America the same act is a 微妙的,含

蓄的subtle insult, an 表明,迹象indication that the food wasn't good enough to

finish.

8 Of course, this mental 灵活性flexibility doesn't come from mere distance, a

simple change in 纬度latitude and 经度longitude . Instead, this 复兴,复苏

renaissance of 创造性appears to be a side effect of difference: We need to change

cultures, to experience the 令人迷失方向的,令人晕头转向的disorienting 多样性

diversity of human traditions. The same 方面facets of foreign travel that are

so 令人困惑的confusing (Do I tip the waiter? Where is this train taking me?) turn

out to have a 持久的lasting 冲击impact, making us more 富于创造力的creative

because we're less 与世隔绝的,思想狭隘的insular. We're 提醒remained of all that

we don't know, which is nearly everything; we're surprised by the 不断地,永恒的

constant stream of surprises. Even in this 全球化了的globalized age, we can

still be 惊讶啊mazed at all the earthly things that weren't included in the Let's Go

旅行指南guidebook and that certainly don't 存在exist back home.

2 The fact is that Chinese parents do things that seem 挑衅的provocative, 难

以想象的unimaginable, even 违法的illegal, to 顽固的opinionated Westerners.

Chinese mothers can 摈弃dispense with formal 礼貌做法courtesies and say to

an 肥胖obese的child who 狼吞虎咽 gorges on food, "Hey fatty, lose some

weight." By 对比,不同,contrast Western parents must be 仁慈的humane , 踮起

脚尖,小心翼翼 tiptoe around the issue, talk in 术语,方面issue of "health", and

never ever 提起,提到mention the f开头的单词-word . And still their kids end

up in 治疗,疗法therapy for eating 紊乱,疾病disorder and a 负面的negative

自我形象self-image. I've thought long and hard about how Chinese parents can

get away with what they do, and I think there are three 意识形态上的ideological

differences between Chinese and Western parents.

11 Westerners 宣扬,布道preach respecting the children's 个性individuality ,

encouraging them to 追求pursue their true 激情,爱好passions, supporting their

choices, and providing a 积极的positive and 培育,助长的,有益的nurturing 环境

environment. But while Western children may have a high 看法,意见opinion of

themselves and 发光的,赞美的glowing self-esteem, how do they 表现perform, in

the real world? Chinese parents protect their children by盔甲,为…提供防御

armoring them for the future, letting them see what they're 能干的,能胜任的

capable of, and 赋予,授予conferring upon them skills, work habits, and 内心的,

内在的inner 信心confidence that no one can ever take away. When the time comes

to perform, Chinese children have a 蓝图blueprint for success; they know how to

竞争,比赛compete with the best the world has to 提供,给予offer. The 证据,证

明 proof is in the pudding!
