In America, there's only one way to pronounce 1. the letter Z: zee, of course.

However, head to England, Ireland, or any other English­speaking country, 2. and

you'll find that most natives refer to the same letter as zed.

To understand this difference 3. in pronunciation, you have to look at the origins

of the English alphabet. As you can imagine, the British zed is the 4. older (old) of the

two pronunciations, and it 5. dates (date) all the way back to the 1400s. The

pronunciation comes from Latin and Greek, as both ancient languages are 6. similarly
