(1)When I try to understand what it is that prevents so many Americans from

being as happy as one might expect, it seems to me that there are two causes, of

which one goes much deeper than the other.

当我试图去理解是什么阻挡了许多美国人得到他们应有 的快乐时， 我脑海里出现两个

原因，而其中一个原因更甚于另一个。

（2）It had been a fine ,golden autumn , a lovely farewell to those who would

lose their youth, and some of them their lives, before the leaves turned yellow again

in a peacetime fall.

那是个天气晴朗的金色秋天，美好的秋色为那些青年们送别。待到战后和平时期，黄叶

纷飞的秋天再度来临时，当日的青年已经失去了青春，有的丧失了生命。

（1）It was a day as fresh as grass growing up and clouds going over and

butterflies coming down can make it. It was a day compounded from silences of

bee and flower and ocean and land , which were not silences at all, but motions,

stirs, flutters, rising ,each in its own time and matchless rhythm.

绿草萋萋，白云冉冉，彩蝶翩翩，这日子是如此清新；蜜蜂无言，春花不语，海波声歇，

大地音寂，这日子是如此安静。然而并非安静，因为万物各以其独特的节奏，或动，或摇，

或震，或起，或伏。

（2）I believe that I speak for every sincere and serious representative in the

United Nations-- so I am encouraged to believe by the speeches to which we have

already listened this morning--when I say that assessment of our failures in the

past ,matched by an equally determined will to do better in the future ,so that we

can escape from frustration and turn the anniversary into an inspiration and an

achievement.

我相信我是代表联合国每一位真诚而严肃的代表发言，因为今天早上我们听过的演讲鼓

励我去相信这个事情。所以我说这次周年纪念是一个诚实地评估我们过去失败的机会，同样

也是一个表达我们共同的决心做好今后工作的机会，只有这样我们才能从挫败中走出来，并

把这次周年纪念转变成一种鼓励和成就。
