0n Pursuing Fashion
Nowadays, more and more are pursuing fashion. Some of them even cut down the
expenditure/expenses on books and meals to satisfy their desire for fashionable dress.
The blind following/pursuit of fashion has had a great influence/impact,effect on college
students. First of all, the pursuit of fashion has made many college students get lost. Some of them
even fail to focus on/concentrate on their study. Secondly, it is a costly hobby to follow the tide,
which will impose great financial burden on their parents.
As far as I am concerned, college students should cherish ambitions rather than become slaves
of fashion. As for them, the main task on computer is not to pursue fashion but to study. All in all,
undergraduates should adopt a more reasonable attitude towards the pursuit of fashion.

The Prevalence of Western Fast Food
Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and
teenagers. Today, nothing is more representative of the fast pace of modern society than fast food.
There are several reasons for its popularity. For one thing, it is fast and convenient. Go into a
fast food restaurant, and your food will be ready in a minute. Precious time won’t be wasted
waiting-in-line to order or waiting at your table for your food to arrive. For another, its popularity
is also attributed to the clean food, the excellent service and the comfortable environment of the
fast food restaurant in American style.
I think that fast food isn’t healthy enough because it doesn’t compose a balanced diet and is
low in nutrition. Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and we should turn to
only once in a while.

Credit
Credit is of great importance to our development and plays a significant role in the society. It
is our wealth and way to success. It is the fundamental factor that our society develops in a
sustainable way.
Unfortunately, the whole society seems to be faced with “credit crisis” nowadays. You don’t
need to look far for evidence. The worldwide financial crisis, triggered by borrower’s failure to
pay back the money to the banks, is a typical example. Even family members and friends cheat
each other, just for their respective benefits. For instance, my neighbor Mark was persuaded by his
friend to buy an insurance product last month but it turned out that he was cheated.
As college students, we should realize the importance of credit and form a good habit of
keeping our word. For instance, if we have credit cards, we should bear in mind paying debts on
time. Whenever we make a promise, we should try to keep it. As long as we take credit seriously,
we can be trustworthy.

Environmental protection
Today the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world
population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our
natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we
continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive.
Concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. Governments of
many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop
environmental pollution.
In my opinion, more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People
should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of
birth control, to conserve our natural resources and recycle our products. We are sure that we can
have a better and cleaner place in the future.

The Advantages of Saving Money
Many people are fortunate enough to make more money than they immediately need. What
should they do with this extra income? Most people would like to enjoy it immediately. There are
too few saving it. They have no idea how important saving money is.
Saving money is of great importance. By saving money, people gain themselves more security.
Their savings can spare them a great deal of suffering and help them through a hard time. In
addition, saving money helps people develop the habit of setting goals and planning for the future.
While it is tempting for people to spend all their income on things they desire, as a college
student I believe it is better to save at least a portion of the extra income for the future. If we learn
to save our money, we will lead a more secure and, thus, happier life.

Moral Cultivation in Higher Education
With more negative reports on college students’ immoral behavior appearing in the newspaper,
people come to realize the importance of enhancing students’ moral education. Now, higher
education institutes starts to emphasize more on the young’s moral cultivation, as the primary and
middle schools do.
There is no doubt that moral education is of great significance
to human beings and the
development of the society. It is well known that man’s civilization should be governed by law.
However, law is not that almighty. There still are many fields that are beyond the reach of law,
which makes morality and moral education necessary for our society. Only with moral education
will the advance of our society be guaranteed.
In my opinion, moral cultivation is as important as academic education in colleges. If people
focus too much on high marks and neglect moral education, students bred in such an atmosphere
may turn out to be graduates with flaws in character, which will do no good to the society in the
end. Therefore, it is high time people attached more importance to moral cultivation.

The Old in the Empty Nest
Traditionally, most elderly people lived with their children, grandchildren and even grand
grandchildren if possible. However, with the social development, more senior citizens live only
with their spouses or live alone nowadays. These old people are referred to as “ the old in the
empty nest”.
There are mainly two reasons for this phenomenon. On one hand, due to the fierce competition
in the job market, millions of young people have to pursue their careers in another area or city far
away from their parents. On the other hand, with the improvement in economy and housing
conditions, it is possible for a family to own more than one apartment. Together, the two factors
change people’s former lifestyles and make the empty nest possible.
Elderly people in the empty nest are more likely to feel lonely and depressed than those who
live with their children. To alter this situation, joint efforts should be made. The young should try
to spare time and visit their parents regularly. What’s more important is that the senior citizens
should cultivate their own hobbies, join in various activities and turn their focus from their
children to their own life, which will help fight with the loneliness.

NEET
The problem of NEET, once well-known in the UK and Japan, has been brought into public
attention now in China. NEET refers to the group of the young who are not currently engaged in
education, employment or training. Most of these young people just stay at home or idle about,
avoiding employment and relying on their parents.
There are mainly two reasons for this phenomenon. For one thing, with the expansion of
university enrollment, an increasing number of college graduates pour into job-hunting market
every year. Unfortunately, some of them are not
fully prepared and thus become unemployed the
time they graduate. For another, some young people are badly spolt as the only child of their
family, so they psychologically and financially depend on their parents even when they are already
grown-ups.
To solve this problem, first, colleges should provide pre-job training courses for the young.
Second, parents should cultivate their children the sense of independence. Last but not the least,
college students should equip themselves with skills and knowledge so that they will become
competitive when seeking jobs.

Left-behind Children in the Countryside
There are about 58 million left-behind children in rural China and over 40 million
of them are under 14 years old, according to a report released by the All-China
Women
’
s Federation in February 2009. The report also found that more than half of
the children left behind don
’
t live with either parent. Telephone is often the only
means by which they can contact their parents.
Left-behind children can not get enough good care and necessary instruction in
their everyday lives, including emotional support and study help. The biggest risk for
left-behind children is that they lack of family intimacy. Intimate family care is
3 / 4
indispensable to every child
’
s growth. Since most of the left-behind children are at a
critical stage of development, they may develop psychological problems stemming
from their parent
’
s absence.
With the number of left-behind children rising rapidly, efforts will be needed from
rural families, schools and governments to care for this special group, who need, as it
is, more communication from their parents to reduce their loneliness, psychological
counseling and relative activities from schools to maintain a healthy mind, and special
homes set up by local governments where they can meet other kids of the same kind
and experience the warmth of society.
CET6-5
Many people copy the passages without citing the original contributors while writing theses.
Some people even reproduce the theses by simply changing the author’s names and try to pass the
material as their own. Take the notorious former associate professor of the X University , who
copied a doctoral supervisor’s research results in his theses and sent one paper to different journal
for publication.
There is no doubt that plagiarism does great harm. A famous person once called academic
plagiarism as a “serious violation of collegial trust, the fundamental principle on which the
integrity of medical journalism depends.” In addition to the violation of trust, it can also offend the
rights of the original author. It is the “theft of intellectual property” and plagiarists are “stealing”
others’ words or ideas without permission.
To prevent plagiarism, we may resort to modern technology to detect it beforehand.
Although it is generally difficult to detect plagiarism, advances in information technology are
making it increasingly possible. For example, the availability of dedicated web site designed to
provide information on plagiarism had made it easier for people to detect copying.
