The Trouble with Tenses
English is hard. I really like learning new words and reading
stories, but there's one part of English that makes my head hurt -
the tenses for talking about the past and the future! Why can't it
just be simple?
First, there's the past tense. You'd think it would be easy to
talk about stuff that already happened, right? But no, English has
to make it super confusing with multiple ways to say it. There's
the simple past tense like "I walked" or "She played." Seems
straightforward enough. But then there's also the past
progressive, like "I was walking" or "She was playing." When do
you use which one? Nobody really explains it in a way that sticks
in my brain.
And don't even get me started on the perfect tenses! The
present perfect is supposed to be for things that happened in
the past but still connect to the present somehow. "I have
walked" or "She has played." But I never know if I should use that
or just the simple past. My teacher tries to explain when to use
each one, but I still get them mixed up constantly.
Then there are the really weird ones like past perfect and
past perfect progressive. "I had walked" or "She had been
playing." Who actually talks like that in normal conversation? I've
been learning English for years now and I still don't fully
understand when you're supposed to use those. I usually just
stick to the simple past to be safe.
Talking about the future is no picnic either! With the simple
future like "I will walk" or "She will play", it's not too bad.
Although you have to be careful to use "going to" instead of
"will" sometimes, like if you're talking about your intentions. I'm
going to pull my hair out trying to keep that straight!
The future progressive is the one that really ties my brain in
knots. "I will be walking" or "She will be playing." What does that
even mean? Why can't you just say the simple future? My friends
and I joke that the future progressive is only for extraordinarily
complicated scenarios, like:
"Yes, at 9:37am next Thursday, I will be frantically running
down the sidewalk because I'm late for the bus. I will be carrying
my backpack and half-eaten Pop-Tart in one hand while trying to
