Vocational Education in Germany and China: A World of
Difference
Hi there! My name is Emily and I'm a 10-year-old student.
Today, I want to tell you about something really interesting I
learned - the big differences between vocational education in
Germany and China.
Vocational education is all about learning skills for specific
jobs and careers. It's different from the regular school stuff we
do like math, science, reading and so on. With vocational training,
you prepare for work like being a chef, carpenter, electrician or
nurse.
In Germany, vocational education is a hugely important part
of their education system. They have a really cool setup called
the "dual system." I think it's super neat!
The Dual System in Germany
With the dual system, German students spend part of their
time in vocational schools, and part of the time getting
on-the-job training at companies. How awesome is that?
The school part teaches them the theoretical knowledge and
classroom basics for their chosen career. The on-the-job part lets
them get real, practical, hands-on experience at an actual
workplace. It's like the best of both worlds!
Students in the dual system typically spend a few days a
week at their vocational school, and then a few days getting
trained at a company. The companies provide the practical
training and even pay the students a small salary during the
apprenticeship period. Isn't that so cool? Getting paid while
you're still a student!
There are hundreds of different vocational programs to pick
from in Germany, everything from banking to zoology. Once
students complete their dual program after 2-3 years, they earn
official certification as a skilled worker in that profession. Pretty
neat, right?
The Importance of Vocational Education in Germany
Germans value vocational education so much. Around half of
all students go through the dual system after finishing basic
