13、

People often decide where to live based on the natural resources in the area. Natural resources are things that are

useful to people and come from the earth. Materials for building houses are natural resources. So are foods, such as

fruits, vegetables, animals that could be caught or hunted and water.

The weather and land forms let certain things grow in different areas. They also determine(

决定

)which living things will

be able to grow there. Areas with very rich soil are made to be good farming communities. Poor soil may send farmers to

look for better places. However, areas with poor soil may attract those who have other purposes for the land. Poor soil

doesn’t matter if you want to build a factory. It also doesn’t matter if it grows grass well.

Each area attracts people based on their interests and purposes. Areas that support many different interests will

naturally have larger populations. You may not think of the mountains, lakes or oceans as natural resources. In fact they

are. Villages and cities built near water sources have been the most successful. People who want to catch fish for a living

choose to live by the ocean, instead of the desert. People living near water can use it to meet their daily needs.

Places that are difficult to reach will naturally have fewer people. Places that are high on mountain tops are not very

desirable to most people. Neither are places that are in the middle of hot, dry deserts.

For too long, humans have destroyed resources. We have been using up those that can’t be easily replaced.

Renewable(

可再生的

) resources are those that can be replaced easily. We are lucky to have many resources that are

renewable, such as the sun, wind, water and trees. We need to use more renewable resources. This will protect our

planet.

1

Areas with very rich soil can be used as_______.

A

fishing places B

ranching places

C

a factory D

farming communities

2

What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?

A

What people living near water live on except fishing.

B

How big villages and cities by the oceans come out.

C

People choose places to live according to interests and purposes.

D

People don’t live in places that are difficult to reach.

3

Which of the following does NOT belong to natural resources?

A

Animals that could be caught. B

Beds, tables and chairs.

C

The mountains, lakes or oceans. D

Materials for building houses.

4

What is the best title for the passage?

A

The natural resources. B

An area’s weather.

C

How to choose your house. D

Renewable resources.

15、

Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful

whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and tried hard to start breathing.

Oliver had his first fight without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who

was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in

Oliver’s survival. _______.

However, Oliver finally drew his first breath, and then announced his arrival to the rest of the workhouse by crying

loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow(

枕头

) and said, “Let me see the child, and die.”

The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. “You must not talk about dying yet,”

he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, then looked

wildly around the room, fell back—and died. “Poor dear!” said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in

the pocket of her long skirt.

The doctor began to put on his coat. “The baby is weak and will probably be in danger,” he said. “If so, give it a

little milk to keep it quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman. “The mother was a good-looking girl. Where did she

come from?”

“ She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. She’d walked some

distance, Her shoes were worn to pieces. Where she came from, where she was going to, or what her name was, nobody

knows.”

The doctor lifted the girl’s left hand. “The old story,” he said sadly, shaking his head. “No wedding ring, I see. Ah!

Good night.”

And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. Without clothes, under his first blanket, he could have been the

child of a king or a beggar (

乞丐

). But when the woman dressed him later in hard cotton clothes, yellow with age, he

looked exactly what he was—an orphan (

孤儿

) in a workhouse, ready for a life of sadness, hunger, and neglect (

忽略

).

Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphan, perhaps he would have cried even

more loudly.

It’s a long-awaited day for China. The navy now has its first aircraft carrier(

), Liaoning. It’s a unique

experience to get to know the life in the carrier. The carrier is just like a small city on the sea. It has all the functions for

daily life. There are 4 words to sum up its characters: big, small, much and high. The carrier Liaoning is such a huge

one that the total length of the whole corridor

(过道)

could reach over 20 kilometers. But the living space for the sailors

(水手)

is quite small. That’s because the carrier is designed for researching purposes, rather than comfortable living.

Over 1,000 sailors, both men and women, are living onboard. They are arranged among over 3,000 tiny rooms below the

deck.. For visitors, it’s so easy to get lost. So the first thing the new sailors have to learn is their way around. The

number of female sailors is much less than that of the males, taking about 5 percent of the total. But they play a key role

in carrying out some special missions.

Also, you will be surprised by the high level of education of today’s sailors. The captain said that over 90 percent of the
