Providing Physical Exercises Should Not Be The Schools Responsibility?
While physical exercise is important, I do not believe that it is the school’s
responsibility to provide physical training for its students.
That is something that everyone can take care of on his or her own.
Many students get plenty of physical exercise as part of their daily life or recreation. A
student who bicycles ten miles to and from school does not need more exercise. A good
physical education program must take a student’s outside activity into consideration.
Otherwise, some students will spend valuable class hours repeating physical exercise.
If a school offers such activities, it also suggests that students will be graded on them.
The range of possible physical activities is great: football, swimming, weight lifting, ballet,
ballroom dance, yoga, skiing, horseback riding, and golf are just a few. However, the
number of activities that a school could offer is small. Some students could get bad grades
in physical education simply because the school could not provide an activity they enjoy or
do well. This seems unfair. Research suggests that participation, not excellence, in these
activities determines the physical benefits the body will get.
Another issue is economic. Many schools do not have the money to provide gry
facilities, playing fields, and athletic equipment for their student. Other schools are located
in cities where the kind of space just is not available. A few schools would rather keep
money for academic purposes.
3
Schools can certainly encourage physical activity. They can provide space for activities,
events, and classes for physical activities. They can encourage students to plan time away
from academic studies to get some exercise. However, I think that providing exercise should
not be the schools responsibility.
Living In University Dormitories or Apartments in the Community?
I think it is better for college students to live on campus during their first two years, and
then move into an apartment for off-campus life, while juniors and seniors need the
independence of off-campus life. Student’s needs change over four years, so their housing
should too.
Living on-campus makes it easier to get oriented to the way things are done. You get
the whole university experience. Plus, you interact more with other students. This includes
not only your roommates, but everyone in your dormitory. The older students in the
dormitory can be a big help for the new students. Keeping up with studies in your first year
is hard enough. You should not have to worry about finding your way around and figuring
out the university bureaucracy.
Living in the dormitory also makes a student feel more a part of the university
community. There are more opportunities for becoming involved in university activities and
networking with students and university administration.
Living off-campus, however, is a definite advantage for older students.
Finding an
apartment, dealing with leases and the landlord’s regulations, cooking meals, and figuring
out budgets are all good practice for life after graduation. This kind of independence helps
4
older students grow in adulthood.
Off-campus housing also gives students a better perspective on what is going on
around them. Campus can be like little worlds of their own. There are few children or older
people and everyone is focused on education. Getting to know neighbors who are not
students is good for students coming from difference places. It is a chance to find out what
other people think and feel.
I think a combination of two years on-campus and two years off-campus is a winning
combination for most students. Children should begin their formal schooling at an early
age
5
Children Should Begin Their Formal Schooling at an Early Age
People have different views on what children should do at a very early age. Some think
that children should begin their formal education and start to spend most of their time on
studies. Others believe that it is still time for young children to play. Both views are based
on respective ground.
Those who argue for the playing time for children suggest that children at a very early
age are still too young to focus their attention on learning. Their brain may not be ready for
serious studies such as comprehension and memorizing learning materials. These people
are partially right, for it is true that young children can hardly concentrate. Their attention
on one thing lasts for no longer than 15 minutes or so. But we can arrange classes for
shorter periods, can’t we? And we can shift teaching subjects. Through putting them to
study, young children are occupied with learning but not with playing.
Those who argue for children’s early commencement for formal education believe
that being put to studies, children can develop good habit of studying, for the process of
learning helps develop children’s mental abilities like the ability to memorize, the ability to
understand and the ability to do simple calculation. Children’s habit of studying and love
for learning are of great importance to youngsters because these two things set up the
sound foundation for their future studies.
Having children start formal education at a very early age benefits young children
much more than simply letting them play most of their time. A good habits needs a long
6
time to develop to become a second nature. More importantly, it is better to develop a
good habit before a bad one may grow. Similarly, the love for learning should take toots for
before the love for playing is established.
7
Should A Person Make An Important Decision Alone?
A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should
be well thought out. People who know you well, know what is best for you, and close to you
can give you good advice, give you a different perspective, or share their own experience.
When I had difficulty deciding which classes to take in collage, I talked to my teachers
and advisors, they had the knowledge and expertise to help me determine which classes
were the best ones to take for my future career. Without their advice, I might have chosen
unsuitable courses.
In collage, I had convinced myself that I was not good enough to act in the school play.
Therefore, I decided not to audition even though drama had always been my passion. The
day of the audition, a friend of mine asked me why I was not auditioning. When I told her I
did not feel I was good enough, she was shocked, she was able to provide me with another
perspective on myself and my talents. I rethought my decision and tried out….and got a
lead in the play.
Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to
my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decision for me because
I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied
overseas the precious year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might
encounter and helped me make the right decision. I went and it was amazing.
8
Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am
well-informed and have the benefit of their perspective and experience

amount of effort goes into their production. So in most cases the
photography is truly artistic, the slogans are genuinely witty, and the
situations are decidedly funny.
Generally speaking, advertisements have become one of the most
authoritative voices speaking to us today. Let us make our life easier by

salve.:At the beginning of the new millennium, there are wider social concerns
about increasingly conspicuous splits in society between those who are
computer literate, employable and well paid, and those who are not, -----Such
split is termed "Digital Divide". What do you think is ONE of the major
problems that may result from this trend? Write an essay of about 400 words
on the topic given below:
A Major Problem Resulted From Digital Divide(数字鸿沟,数码鸿沟)
In recent years, although the majority of all countries especially the post-industrial
societies, have achieved preeminent(卓越的) progress thanks to the widespread of personal
computer and Internet, this trend also resulted in large groups of poor, underprivileged(被
剥夺基本权力的,穷困的,下层社会的) and disadvantaged(贫穷的,处于不利地位的) people who
lack in computer skills. Such groups have limited access to the information age and are
10
identified below the Digital Divide. These people find it difficult to find a decent job, and
many of them are likely to turn to drugs and crimes. In a word, this tendency has created
many social problems, namely unemployment, cime, drug abuse, disparity(不一致, 不同, 不
等) between the rich and the poor, and so on. I think the most important element among
them is crime.
The Digital Divide functions on two levels, namely the domestic level and the
international level. On the domestic level, when it comes to other negative effects
accompanied by the emergence of Digital Divide such as unemployment and drug abuse,
some people may adopt an inappropriate perspective that they are not affected by these
problems and show no interest in solving them. Regardless of the political correctness of
such opinions, the devastating effects of crimes closely associate with all those in the
society and allow of no neglect. If we don't put this issue under scrutiny, our lives and
properties will naturally suffer great loss as a result and this issue virtually serves the
function of a trigger of dissatisfaction among the people. Furthermore, since the computer
skills are necessary in our routine jobs, those computer illiterate will be disappointed to find
they are not qualified to have an upper hand in the job market. They have no choice but to
commit crimes as a means of earning their bread as well as revenging(报仇, 复仇,替...报仇,
复仇)on the society.
On the international level, people in underdeveloped countries will lament that their
situation is worse than before since the advent of the personal computer and Internet,
whose original purpose is , ironically, to provide convenience as well as efficiency to all
human beings instead of causing social and economical gaps between rich and poor
countries. To make it worse, radicals from some underdeveloped countries will attribute
their plight to the exploitation and oppression inflicted by developed countries aided by
11
advanced technology. Consequently, they are entitled to take an extreme form of crime,
namely terrorist attacks launched against Western contries, as they deserve the
punishment.
If the digital technology continues to develop at the expense of those beneath the
Digital Divide and the underdeveloped countries do not take an active approach to the
problems, even well educated computer literates in developed countries will not enjoy their
lives devoid of a sense of security. To eliminate all crimes caused by the Digital Divide, all
governments should provide the underclass with educational and financial provision, which
in turn generates possible job opportunities. Meanwhile, developed countries should
provide unconditional economic, financial, technological aids for poor countries to help
them build infrastructure and purchase equipment so that they can take advantage of
current technology.
Should Household Chores Be Required as Part of the Daily Routine of School
Children?
Some people think that household chores家务杂事 should be required part of the daily
routine of school children. Other people believe that young children should spend more
time on their academic studies. Which viewpoint do you agree to? Write a composition of
about 400 words on the following topic:
Should Household Chores Be Required as part of the Daily Routine of School Children?
Some parents prefer to do all the household chores by themselves for fear that the
daily job will infringe on their children's valuable time on learning. In fact, it is advisable to
12
provide household chores as a daily responsibility to young children.
Since great progress has been made recently in terms of(根据, 按照, 用...的话, 在...方面)
living conditions thanks to the material prosperity in our country, school children generally
enjoy a more comfortable life under cozy(舒适的, 安逸的, 惬意的) circumstances and have
greater chance to receive first-rate education. On the other hand, however, some of them
are spoiled and unwilling to take on their own responsibility. With the introduction of home
economics(家政学), young students will respect physical labor and develop their work ethic,
which may contribute tremendously to the development of their characters. With numerous
shackles(桎梏) and obstacles waiting for them in the long journey of life, the students
should become aware of the urgent need to practice chores as an essential form of
tempering(回火) their willpower. When they take up the chores industriously(勤勉的, 刻苦的)
on the own with parents' guidance instead of interference, they will gradually acquire such
qualities as diligence, perseverance, and patience.
Another reason why I preach the importance of household economics for children lies
in the fact that it is a convenient method to learn useful skills after class. During the course
of cooking, house cleaning, baby-sitting, fence repairing, car washing, grass mowing, and
wall painting, the young children may obtain certain techniques and then use their
imagination to foster a sense of creativity and achievement, which combine to pave the way
for their future career.
The last but not least factor is economic. If their children dawdle(偷懒,闲逛) over the
work or even refuse to fulfill their obligations, an incentive payment is a good proposal to
encourage them to earn them own pocket money. The truth is that the children will find
themselves overtaken(突然降临,压倒) with joy upon receiving their deserved salary, which
13
in turn helps them realize the virtue of self-reliance(自恃, 倚靠自己) and self-struggle.
Some people may concern that the housework will occupy a large amount of their
children's time, which will bring about terrible school reports, cause physical and mental
fatigue, or even result in unpredictable negative effects. Obviously, appropriate amount of
chores in children's leisure time is the last one to threaten their academic achievements and
health because of advantages such as relaxation, stress relieving, and weight maintenance.
If parent entrust(委托) appropriate housework to their children with necessary guidance,
they will be amazed at these young people's abilities to tackle a good many problems,
which help to cultivate(培养,栽培) a sense of responsibility and pride. As an effective
complementary form of school education in modern society, it should no doubt become a
productive part of school children's life.
University Education is Essential to One's success
It is said that nowadays one cannot acquire the qualifications and qualities essential to
success through university education or study in some institutions of similar nature. You are
going to argue for or against it and support your view with details.
University Education is Essential to One's success
It is not an uncommon phenomenon that many people become successful without a
formal college education, some typical examples of which are Bill Gates, chairman of
Microsoft; Li Jiacheng, a Hong Kong billionaire and Hua Luogeng, a world-class
mathematician. This leads some people to believe that a person can achieve great success
14
without a formal education and that the qualifications a successful person needs cannot be
acquired through the study in university or other institutions of similar nature. It cannot be
denied that there do exist such examples in every country; however, I can hardly share the
above point of view for several reasons
In the first place, a college or university is a specialized institution of higher learning
where people can receive systematic and scientific training in a certain field, which paves
the way for(为...铺平道路) their future career. With the advent of the era of knowledge-based
economy, a man without a sound academic background can hardly accomplish anything.
Only in universities and other institutions of higher learning can he/she master the
professional knowledge and relevant skills essential to his/her career.
Secondly, it is wise to learn at another man's cost. We can benifit much from the
invaluable experience and knowledge handed down from our ancestors and draw a lesson
from the failure of our predecessors so as to avoid detour.
Thirdly, when in university, one also has to learn to communicate and cooperate with
teachers and fellow students, during which one cultivates friendship and acquires the
interpersonal skills, both of which are conductive to one's future career and success.
University is said to be a miniature society.
Last of all, there are innumerable successful people who attribute their achievements to
a formal university education. It is no wonder that so many parents spare no efforts to send
their children to colleges and universities.
From what I have mentioned above, it is obvious that we can acquire the qualifications
15
and qualities essential to our future career and success through university education. The
systematic knowledge and solid academic foundation will make it easy for us to understand
and absorb new-developed theories based on previous research efforts; with the social
skills we acquire in such a miniature society as university, we will not have to waste much
time learning how to handle human relationship. Compared with those without formal
university education, university graduates have already gained an upper hand(优势,上风,有
利地位) at the very beginning of building their own career.

Travel Helps Promote Communication Between Countries
Tourism has already become a multibillion-dollar industry that supports economic
development. You are going to write an article entitled: Travel Helps Promote
Communication Between Countries
Travel Helps Promote Communication between Countries
With the steady growth in the world's economy as well as the people's living standard,
nowadays more and more people are able to afford to go to travel abroad. Thus people of
different races and colors have more chances to meet each other and understand each
other. Such activities among people help promote the understanding and communication
between countries, which helps to make this world a better and more harmonious place.
Different countries are striving to develop their national tourism because tourism really
has a lot of advantages. Firstly, beautiful scenery, attractive tourist spots and splendid
culture allure tourists with different parts of the world, which provides many opportunities
to promote exchanges among people from different backgrounds. For example, since the
reform and opening-up, China, a country which has rich tourist resources, receives millions
of foreign tourists every year. The frequent contacts between foreign tourists and Chinese
people promote the exchanges of culture and science, creating international friendship and
promoting deeper understanding and strengthening ties. Meanwhile this has accelerated
the development of these countries. Secondly, travel enriches one's knowledge, widens
one's vision and enhances mutual understanding. In the past, Chinese people knew little of
17
the outside world. Since the reform and opening-up, with people's living standard greatly
improved, more and more people have the chances to go abroad for sightseeing. Through
traveling, we Chinese have expanded our scope of knowledge, and we have come to know
the world better and have been learning how to develop our own country better. Thirdly,
tourism boosts推进 local economy and promotes commercial exchanges. Singapore is
such a good example. It is a small country with scarce natural resources. But owing to the
prosperous tourism, the country's economy develops very well and it is named one of the
four economic "tigers" in northeastern Asia.
But some people say that tourism cannot work so well as people expect. They argue
that the purpose of the tourists is just to enjoy sightseeing and in fact tourism has its
disadventages. Firstly, tourism does great harm to the tranquility宁静 and sanitation卫生,
卫生设施 of the local place, and sometimes it even causes pollution to the naturel
environment. Secondly, many tourists cannot even speak a word of the language of the
country they are visiting. There is little possibility that they will have a deep understanding
of the country in such a short period of time. Thirdly, during the trip, poor service and
language barrier语言障碍 may even give rise to unwanted不必要的 misunderstanding. Also
the tourists' wealth may make the local people more aware of their own poverty and lead to
jealousy and psychological imbalance.
As the proverb goes, " No garden is without weeds." In my opinion, compared with the
advantages, disadvantages of tourism have become trivial things. It is important for a
country to develop its tourism to upgrade its international position and at the same time
promote global understanding to remove prejudice and bias. We should make good use of
our rich tourist resources to make our motherland more beautiful and attract more foreign
friends.
18
In recent years, some people raise doubts about the practice of co-education. They
think it is not a good idea for the overall development of our younger generation. They
think all-boy or all-girl schools may be a better choice. You are going to write a composition
on the following topic :Co-education or Single-sex Schools
Co-education or Single-sex Schools
Nowadays, we can often hear people complain that it is much more difficult to teach
students of today. They create a lot of problems, which make adults very worried. Some
people even raise doubts about the practice of co-education男女同校. They think that the
problem may lie in our educational system. A girl school or a boy school may be a better
choice. There are also people who firmly advocate提倡, 鼓吹 the practice of co-education.
As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of赞同, 有利于 the latter opinion.
Co-education has a number of advantages. Above everything else, as we all know, the
adult world is made up of male and female, so should the school be. Co-education helps
one better know his/her social role so that one can easily adapt himself/herselp to the
outside world. Secondly, co-education offers a good chance for male and female students
to better understand one another, thus removing illusions and wrong impression of the
opposite sex. The fact is that the more they are segregated from the opposite sex异性, the
more curious they become about the opposite sex. Thirdly, co-education helps refrain
students from忍住, 制止 indecent下流的, 猥亵的, <口>不象样的, 不妥当的 behaviors
because of the presence of the opposite sex. According to an investigation conducted by
some psychologists, students, both male and female, will pay more attention to their own
speech and action with the opposite sex. They will be well-behaved行为端正的, 彬彬有礼的
and well-adjusted.
19
On the other hand, those who are against co-education have their own reasons. First of
all, they maintain that there is a possibility of puppy love 早年初恋. Some teenagers are
precocious早熟的 and they easily fall in love. Second, female students may suffer from
discrimination and inequality. Thirdly, the co-education system cannot cater to the
individual needs of students of both sexes. While in segregated schools, boys and girls can
fully develop themselves to their own interest and abilities. In boy schools, boys can enjoy
many courses specially designed for them while it is the same with girls in girl schools.
When advantages and disadvantages are put together, we can see that the advantages
of co-education far outweigh its disadvantages. What we should do is to change our
methods of teaching children when time changes so that we can keep up with the trend
and let our children develop in a healthy way.
20
Social Activities----a Necessary Complement to College Life
Many university students are taking an active part in all kinds of club activities or sports
on the campus, but quite a few other students dismiss拒绝接受 these activities as
time-consuming耗时的 and useless. This phenomenon results from their different
understanding of college life.
The 'pro-club' students regard participation of some social activities such as activities in
clubs or societies as an important part of their college life while the 'anti-club' students
focus their attention on studies rather than, as they put it, on recreation消遣, 娱乐 or
entertainment.
In fact, clubs or sports mean much more than recreations or entertainment. They are a
necessary complement补足 to college life, enriching the students life by engaging them in
certain interesting activities. Furthemore, to take part in an art club, or say, a Project Hope
Association will prevent the students from becoming book worms极爱读书的人,书呆子 and
help them improve their skills in communicating with people, planning an activity or
leading an organization.
It is reported that students who have engaged themselves in certain club activities or
sports can easily adapt themselves to a new environment after they graduate from their
universities. But it is a hard nut to crack棘手的问题 for those who have all the time been
burying themselves in books.
21
Someone may argue by raising a problem of time. As a matter of fact事实上, time is not
a problem so long as只要 we arrange it in a proper way .The key is how to improve the
efficiency of study so as to使得, 以致 spare aome time for appropriate social activities.
However, it is safer to say that priority should be given to academic courses普通课程;
学术课程. Only on the premise that both energy and time are available, can we engage
ourselves in certain club activities or sports.
22
What Do We Need: Physical Recreation or Intellectual Activities
Many people enjoy very active physical recreation like sports, camping and fishing.
Other people prefer to spend their leisure time participating in more intellectual activities
like reading, listening to music, collecting stamps or watching films. Write an essay,
comparing physical pastimes with intellectual ones and explain why you think physical or
intellectual activities are better to a person of your age.
What Do We Need: Physical Recreation or Intellectual Activities
Many people are inclined to倾向于 take active physical recreation, like sports, camping
and fishing in their leisure time, while others would rather participate in more intellectual
activities, like reading, listening to music, watching films and so on. Although it is
unreasonable and impossible to tell which one is absolutely better than the other, in my
opinion, it seems more advisable for the young people about 20~25 years old to take the
latter which is in accordance with与...一致 their unique characteristics.
First, compared with physical activities, intellectual ones become more urgent and
important. Since the young generation full of energy are at their highest points to learn and
explore, there is no doubt that they should make full use of their golden age to enrich
knowledge, cultivate their mind, broaden their vision, and develop their tastes. Thus, they
will be more creative and contributive to the society as they set out to开始 their own
careers.
23
Second, intellectual activities are more helpful for the young people to contact with
their surroundings, of both the past and the present. For example, through reading one can
learn about the wisdom and philosophy held by great figures in history, which may guide
him to lead a more intelligent way of life. Watching films or listeniing to music can help a
person grasp the contemporary当代的 cultural tendency and accordingly因此, 从而 keep
pace with the fast-developing world. It is obvious that simple physical exercises cannot
achieve all of these.
Of course, I want to make it clear that I don't mean physical activities are less helpful to
life than intellectual ones. People should have their own choices on the basis of their
different life styles, characters, hobbies and health. Yet, for the young people of my age, I
suppose the latter will be more practical and meaningful.
Take more intellectual activities when you are young, which will benefit you for your
whole life.
Is Originality Important in Language Learning
In my opinion, originality创意, 新奇is not important in language learning. The reason
why I think so is that language learning does not need originality as a vital condition条件.
Originality is less important to an English learner. A case in point恰当的例子 is in
pronunciation. Every English learner has to spend a long and boring period of time on a
large amount of大量 training of pronunciation. During those days, what students do is to
24
try their best to imitate teacher's pronunciations about English words and make the sound
of them, and then repeat them time by time. To an English learner, the experience is of great
use很有用 to improve his pronunciation. From this case we can see clearly the great
importance of imitation or repetition rather than originality or creativity in the beginning of
language learning.
Originality refers to creativity which amounts to changes, but there are many formed
rules which cannot be changed in language, such as grammatical rules. We cannot create a
new grammatical rule. It is the same that we cannot speak or write a language at will随意,
任意. If one who speaks English wants to make the other peopler understand him, he must
speak it according to English grammar; otherwise nobody would understand him.
Therefore, there is no originality in grammar learning of language.
I do not think originality is important in language learning. It does not follow that
originality is useless. It is when one masters a language and learns to use it that originality
could give him a great beneficial help.

Universality or Diversity
. At present many people think that one language should be used as the universal
language世界语, but others think that by doing so the cultures of different nations will be
lost.
Universality or Diversity
With the development of globalization, there are an increasing number of scholars
these days who hold the opinion that we need a common language共同语 to be spoken by
all the people in the world. However, other scholars are afraid that this will weaken other
languages and cultures at the same time. As for me, I am not in favor of the viewpoint that
one language should replace others as the universal one.
Nowadays it is universally acknowledged公认的 that language is not only a tool of
communication but also a kind of art. Each language, no matter what kind of language it is,
has its unique pronunciation, grammar and expressions, which contribute to the diversity
多样性 of the world. Therefore, if the diverse languages are diminished, our world will
become less colorful.
We can say that language is part of culture, and plays a considerably相当地 important
role in culture. Indeed, some social scientists consider it the keystone重点, 要旨 of culture.
Without language, so the argument goes, culture would not be possible. On the other hand,
language is influenced and shaped by culture; it reflects culture. In the broadest sense,
26
language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises包含, 由...组成 their
historical and cultural backgrounds as well as their approach to life and their ways of living
and thinking. Cultures differ from one another, and each culture is unique. There is no
denying that it will be a disaster for us to see the world's diverse cultures disappear one by
one.
When all the factors are examined, we may safely确实地 come to the conclusion that
although we are convinced that确信,承认, no matter what our career choice职业选择 is, a
command of foreign languages is an important skill to acquire, yet we should protect our
own language, the carrier of our culture.
Old People Should Not be Forced by Law to Retire
There has long been a debate about whether old people should be forced to retire from
work at the age of 55 or 60, regardless of不管, 不顾 their own wishes. People in favor of this
say that old people, having worked for over thirty years, should not go on working, because
physically they are not as strong, healthy and energetic as they used to be, and mentally
they are not able to endure the same pressure of having to work to earn a living as young
people are. Personally, I do not agree with this point of view for the following reasons:
First, it seems to me that no one should be forced to change his/her lifestyle unless
he/she has committed a crime犯罪. People, whether they are old or young, should have the
right to decide their own way of life. Just as young people can choose to stop working and
enjoy their leisure time as long as they can make ends meet, old people should also be
allowed to continue working, provided that they are still qualified for their jobs.
27
Second, there are many jobs that are especially suitable for old people, such as jobs
that call for more experience and wisdom than physical power. With their rich experience in
both work and life, many old people would make good consultants, instructors, coaches,
doctors and psychologists, to mention only a few.
Last but not least, some old people do not go on working simply for economic reasons.
It seems to them that there is more to work than just making money. They simply enjoy
working as an indispensable不可缺少的 part of their lives. Some of them even develop
various mental and physical problems after retiring from work, and it seems that the best
way to keep them in good health and high spirits is to allow them to keep working.
All in all总而言之, I believe that not only should old people's physical conditions be
taken into consideration but also their psychological needs should be respected. Therefore,
letting them do whatever they are fond and capable of doing will make them much happier
than forcing them to stay isolated from society and endure loneliness in their twilight 黄昏
的 years.
What Is the Most Appealing Feature of a Job?2008年06月25日 星期三 02:24

What Is the Most Appealing Feature of a Job?
What is the most appealing吸引人的 feature of a job? Some people claim that it is a
high salary that makes a job appealing. Others believe that job satisfaction or being useful
to society is more important. In my opinion, although a high wage is by no means决不
unimportant, job satisfaction has priority.
For a start, compared with sheer money, the satisfaction and pleasure one derives from
得自, 由来 his or her work are much more fulfilling and long lasting. Almost every kind of
job can provide people with money to sustain维持 their daily lives, that is, to meet their
physical needs. However, only a few careers can supply people with a sense of satisfaction
and satiate their psychological demands. It is this very sense of gratification满意, not the
money, that makes people feel confident, happy and optimistic. To lead a quality life, a
person should attach more emphasis to job satisfaction than the salary of the job brings.
At the same time, focusing too much on the salary will jeopardize危害 a person's career
prospects. Taking a high salary as a career goal can restrain抑制 one's initiative主动,
suffocate使窒息 one's creativity and hamper妨碍 one's future development, because all
that is involved is earning a living. However, a person who resolves决心 to seek pleasure
and satisfaction in his or her work will go all out全力以赴 to tap his or her potential for
career advancement with the utmost enthusiasm. In this sense, job satisfaction is a more
powerful driving force驱动力 for a person than money.
Lastly, a high salary leads only to the gratification of one's personal needs, while being
29
useful to society coincides with与...相符 the public interests. If a person regards
contributing to the common good as the most important feature of a job, that person will
make the utmost efforts to provide the best service for society, benefiting both the public
and the individual.
Therefore, from the above analysis we can conclude that although a high salary is a
very important feature of an appealing job, job satisfaction is of far more significance for an
employee.

Personal Appearance: Looks Really Count
There is a heated discussion on whether or not one's personal appearance should
count in our daily life. Some will say looks are not everything, and beauty is but skin deep;
others will not agree. They hold the opinion that good personal appearance will leave good
impression on people, and beauty will make people pleasant. On this issue, my opinion is
that personal appearance should count in our daily life.
In job-hunting求职 personal appearance is especially important. A good personal
appearance will make the interviewer feel pleasant and have a good impression of the
interviewee. To some jobs such as public relation associator, model, movie star, a beaufiful
face is essential. In those jobs, homely faces不好看的:缺乏吸引力的 will make people sick.
Personal appearance is also important in looking for a partner in marriage. When a girl
in introduced to a boy by a go-between, the girl's beautiful face will to a great extent make
the boy a prospective seeker; on the other hand, the boy will leave the girl alone after the
meeting if the girl is ugly. Perhaps, this is the reason why boys and girls will try their best to
make themselves have a good appearance before this kind of meeting.
Personal appearance also plays an active role in many other aspects. From these we can
conclude that in our daily life, personal appearance really counts.

Sending Teenagers to Study Abroad: Good or Bad?
Nowadays more and more parents send their teenage children to study abroad. This
has drawn public attention. Some people believe it is good for the children while others are
worried about the development of these teenagers.
Sending Teenagers to Study Abroad: Good Or Bad?
Over the past few years, more and more Chinese parents have been sending their
children abroad, believing the experience of studying abroad will pave the way for their
children's future success. Even now, this rush continues and has become very widespread.
This phenomenon has drawn public attention, with people standing on both sides. It is my
contention论点 that sending teenagers abroad without proper preparation may do more
harm than good to their development.
First of all, these teenagers may have difficulty adapting to the new environment which
might be totally different from the homeland they are used to living in. Therefore, they will
probably experience the so-called "culture shock". They may dislike the food, be unable to
follow the teachers’ teaching method, or have problems dealing with people around them.
As a result, they may find nothing goes well at the beginning and feel lonely and frustrated.
If these teenagers are not well prepared psychologically, their character will probably be
severely affected.
Moreover, for these youngsters'年青人, 少年 language can be a great barrier, which
32
may cause difficulty in both their daily life and their studies. As most of them have just
graduated from middle schools when going abroad, their command of the foreign
language is usually inadequate for living and studying in a foreign country. Consequently,
they may find it hard to follow the teacher's instructions and feel at a loss困惑 as to how to
use the library and how to rent an apartment. The pressure of study and stress of life may
make them feel anxious and upset, which may in turn affect their academic development(学
生)知识的发展, 学术水准的提高.
In conclusion, teenagers studying abroad will probably have an extremely difficult time
and their perspective of academic success will be far from their parents’ expectation.
Sending teenagers abroad may be an unwise decision. Parents should be careful when
making such a choice.
Many parents believe that early childhood education is extremely important for
children's development. How far do you agree or disagree with them?
Early Childhood Education
It is a tradition in China that parents have a high expectation of their children. As
education is considered the most important way to success, young couples today are
paying more and more attention to their children's early education. Many parents send their
children to classes of English, drawing, music, dancing and so on. On the other hand, many
people are strongly against this phenomenon. In my opinion, early childhood education
can be benificial to children's future when it is conducted properly.
33
First of all, good early education can be a lifetime benefit to children. As we know,
cildren are generally quick to grasp new knowledge and master a new skill. So childhood is
usually believed to be the golden time to learn. Many people share the experience that
what they have learnt in their childhood helps lay a solid foundation for their future success.
Many well-known musicians, sports stars, and scientists owe their success to early
childhood learning experiences.
However, early childhood education should not be conducted by force. Many young
couples, with high expection of their children, often force their children to learn when the
children are reluctant不情愿的 to or fail to meet their requirement. This often results in
children's loss of interest in learning and confidence in themselves. Therefore, if parents
really believe it is important or necessary for their children to learn some knowledge or a
certain skill, they should first try to arouse their children's interest in it. When the cildren do
have the desire and the potential, parents can provide them with good conditions, which
will not be too late.
In conclusion, early childhood education is important for children's development. It,
however, should not be carried out only according to parents’ will. Children's interest
should also be taken into consideration.

In Support Of Disabled Students' Access To Higher Education
Things are getting much better since the introduction of the anti-discrimination law in
1991. According to Beijing Daily, more than 300 high school graduates with physical
disabilities残障 attended universities in Beijing between 1996 and 2001. Suppose you
believe disabled students should have access to higher education……
IN SUPPORT OF DISABLED STUDENTS' ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION
Since the introduction of the anti-discrimination law in 1991, there has been a heated
dispute on disabled students' access to higher education. In my point of view, disabled
students should have access to higher education.
Firstly, it is immoral and cruel to deprive disabled students of the right for higher
education. It is a great misfortune for disabled students to lose certain physical functions.
Deprivation of their right for higher education would undoubtedly无庸置疑地, 的确地
worsen(使)变得更坏, 恶化 their situation and make their future life even harder since
education is one of the most important means to achieve a happy life. Some of them,
having overcome countless great difficulties caused by their physical problems, manage to
achieve good academic results. It is definitely inhuman野蛮的 to neglect the great efforts
they make for success and smash their hope for a good life. Besides, higher education can
help disabled students to obtain greater achievements. Disabled people can be as
intelligent as any other citizens, many of them have made remarkable contribution to the
world. Some of the well-known examples include Franklin Roosevelt, Helen Keller, etc.
35
Going over their life experieces, we can easily draw a conclusion that they owed their great
success to the good education they had received. Therefore, discrimination against
disabled students may lead to a great loss of many talents.
In conclusion, we have the obligation to help these people in misfortune to live a happy
life, instead of pushing them to an even worse situation. As disabled students with good
schooling学校教育 can contribute on a larger scale to the development of our country,
shutting the door of higher education to them is not only unethical but also unwise.
Human Cloning or Not?
With the development of cloning technology, the debate over human cloning has been
intensified加强. Proponents建议者, 支持者 of human cloning believe that this technology
will benefit those couples who cannot have children. However, I insist that human cloning
should be banned for the following reasons.
First of all, biological problems underlying cloning are so complex that human cloning
is unsafe. It is well known that animal cloning has a high rate of failure. Many animals are
born dead or deformed残废的. Even if some survive, they may have defects from which they
will die of later on. It was reported that the cloned mice that appeared normal showed
evidence of证明, 说明, 表明 genetic mutation(生物物种的)突变. This is because the
regulatory mechanisms调节机制, which occur normally during development, are disturbed
during the process of cloning. We simply do not have enough knowledge about cloning
and the technology at this stage. If we clone humans, we may produce many abnormal反常
的, 变态的 kindred, which will be nothing but a disaster to our human kind.
36
Moreover, human cloning will bring some social and moral problems. For example,
those couples who are unable to have children might choose to have a copy of one of
a copy of the husband). However, how should the wife react to a physical copy of
her husband who she is in love with? In addition, when the copy meets friends or relatives
of the original, these people will confuse the original with the copy. How they should treat
the copy would be another problem. Besides identity身份, his social status would be a great
headache to the society.
In conclusion, human cloning should be prohibited in the world because it is
scientifically unsafe and will trigger引发, 引起 social and moral crises. Any attempt to clone
humans is an irresponsible action to human life and should be severely punished.

Will Teachers Be Replaced By Computers In The Future?
With the development of society, the computer has pervaded遍及 almost all areas of
life. Some work which used to be done by human beings can be completed by computers.
Therefore, some people assume that teachers will be replaced by computers in the future.
To what extent do you agree of disagree with this opinion?
WILL TEACHERS BE REPLACED BY COMPUTERS IN THE FUTURE?
In education, the computer is playing an increasingly important role, so some people
assume that teachers will be replaced by computers one day. However, I believe that
computers will never be able to replace teachers.
Firstly, the computer can never fulfill teachers’ role in nourishing the human mind and
spirit. Education is more a process of instruction students emotionally and psychologically
than passing on knowledge mechanically. It is widely acknowledged that successful
education is always based on a large amount of investment of love and concern. Students
need teachers' love while in difficulty, for teachers' encouragement can help them gain
confidence. No wonder the famous blind educator and writer Helen Keller once said, "My
teacher's love illuminates my dark life and enables me to find my direction." But how could
students get all of these from an inanimate死气沉沉的, 没生命的 machine even if all the
information of the world could be stored in it?
Another demanding task computers cannot perform is that they cannot teach students
38
according to their individual gifts. A competent有能力的, 胜任的 teacher is always good at
finding out students' shining points. For example, when Gauss高斯 was a child, his teacher
realized he had a special talent in mathematics and helped him exploit his potential and
thus set him to the way of tremendous success in mathematics. This work, of course, is
beyond any computer's ability. Besides, teachers can adjust their teaching to different
students of different characteristic. Students' characteristics are so diversified 形形色色的
that computers can hardly be programmed to meet this requirement.
In conclusion, no matter how advanced computers will be in future, education still has
to be fulfilled by teachers. The teacher is able to be fully aware of students' needs and offer
them what they really want accordingly while the computer is merely a tool manipulated(熟
练地)操作 by human beings to assist the fulfillment of such tasks.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
In China, many grandparents undertake担任 the responsibility of raising their
grandchildren when the young parents are too busy with their paid jobs. This phenomenon
has been the subject for dispute for some time. In my opinion, young parents should take
care of their children by themselves because there are many disadvantages in grandparents
taking care of grandchildren.
First, children who are left to grandparents at an early age may be educationally
disadvantaged later in life because they may miss important early learning opportunities
that occur in parent-child interaction. It is widely acknowledged that childhood is the
golden time to learn. As most young parents receive better education than the
grandparents, they can better assist children in their early learning. Scientific investigation
39
has also shown that intimate parent-child contact accelerates children's language
acquisition语言习得[掌握] and intellectual development.
Moreover, children brought up by grandparents can develop emotional defects. All
children are most attached to使依恋 their parents by nature生来. When unwillingly living
apart from their parents and seeing other children enjoying parents' love and attention,
these children may have a feeling of abandonment, which may develop into an incurable
trauma伤口 in their later life.
Last but not least, children's psychological development can be severely affected. These
children, deprived of direct care from their parents, are usually spoiled by their
grandparents. Consequently, these children are more likely to develop such psychological
problems as egoism自我主义, 利己主义 and egotism自我中心, 自尊自大.
In conclusion, grandparents raising grandchildren may cause negative effects on
children's intellectual, emotional and psychological development. Therefore, the best place
for children is always at their own parents's side.

Psychological Education in Schools
Some people suggest that schools, including primary schools, middle schools and
colleges, should carry out psychological education. To what extent do you agree or
disagree with this opinion?
PSYCHOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS
It is reported that nowadays the number of students with psychological problems in
middle schools and universities is growing rapidly. Therefore, many people propose that
schools should carry out psychological education. Personally, I entirely agree with this
proposal.
First of all, students are the social group most likely to incur psychological problems.
Currently, Chinese students are under growing pressure: society puts high demands on
them; parents have great expectations of them; and they also set themselves exacting强求
challenges. But the fierce competition of various exams forces them to spend almost all
their time on study, which deprives them of the chance to know themselves, or to grasp and
apply practical social skills. Moreover, most students are brought up in uneventful
circumstances, so they are psychologically immature and fragile易碎的, and consequently
lack adaptability. When encountered with frustration or adversity不幸, 灾祸, 逆境, they may
retreat or react with excessive过多的, 过分的 "countermeasures对策".
On the other hand, students cannot get the psychological guidance they need.
Currently, few Chinese educational institutions have established a psychological health
system, and psychological education within primary and middle schools remains nil零. In
41
most cases, students are left to kill the time in their psychological class. Besides, there is not
enough communication between parents, teachers and students. As a matter of fact,
parents and teachers attach so much attention to young people's study that they often
neglect their mental health. All these factors contribute to the increasing psychological
problems in students.
In a word, psychological education is imperative 必要的 for Chinese students. All
schools should offer psychological education so as to achieve the ultimate goal of
education----to foster培养 students' capacity for survival, good inter-personal skill, and the
means of advancing human civilization.
Married Women's Choice: Housewives or Career Women
Today, a great deal of people hold that a man should devote himself to building up a
career while a woman's role should be at home. Some even propose that married working
women should quit their jobs to be full-time housewives, bt some strongly oppose it.
MARRIED WOMEN'S CHOICE: HOUSEWIVES OR CAREER WOMEN
As many families become rich enough to spare wives from having to work, the
centuries-old悠久的Chinese value that a woman's position is at home revives复兴. The
question of whether to be a housewife or a career woman puzzles many Chinese married
women. In my opinion, women should never quit their career.
In the first place, when a woman leaves her job and becomes a full-time housewife,
family and husband will be the centre of all her life, and she will gradually lose her
42
self-esteem自尊 and become spiritually dependent on her husband. However, if the
husband is too busy to spare as much time for her as she has expected, she will feel empty
and frustrated.
Moreover, great differences in the living environment between husband and wife may
result in a tremendous gap, which may ruin the harmonious family relationship. When a
woman gives up her paid job, she will be isolated from the society, and thus ignorant of不
知道 the latest happenings in the world while her husband who fully participates in various
social activities will be well-informed消息灵通的, 熟悉的, 博识的, 见闻广博的 and upgraded
concerning taste and knowledge. Consequently, the couple will have difficulties
communicating with each other. Ths may lead to serious family crisis.
Last but not least, a married woman, when quitting from the job, will lose economic
independence, which is most important in case of divorce. As the divorce rate is growing
higher and higher in today's society, women need to have a career so that they will have a
means to support themselves and their children when marriage breaks up分裂.
In conclusion, a career enables women to live a fuller and safer life. They should have
their own career for the well-being康乐, 安宁, 福利 of themselves and their families.
Should College Students be allowed to Change Their Majors Midway?
For a long time, universities in China adopt a rigid policy on students' selected major.
Students can apply for several majors at a number of colleges or universities before they are
enrolled into the university. Once this process has been completed, it is very difficult for
students to alter their choices. Now many universities start to reduce restraint on major
43
shift. ……
Should College Students be Allowed to Change Their Majors Midway?
Most Chinese college students know how difficult it can be to change their majors
midway through their studies. Now, some universities have adopted a more flexible policy
which allows students to change their majors without restraint自由地, 无拘束地, 无节制地,
providing they can meet the entrance requirements入学标准 of the course they wish to
take. This has aroused a heated discussion. In my opinion, this alternation in major policy is
good for students' development and should be practiced in all universities.
Firstly, reducing the limitations previously imposed on changing majors gives students
another chance to select their careers with a mature outlook. It is well known that the
majors many college students take are not what they are really interested in. As a result,
some students have no zest 热情 in their major at all. In the past, students had to either
struggle with their original choices or kill their time in desperation无可奈何地 and wait for
the second choice in their postgraduate 研究生 studies. Therefore, restriction on changing
major is in fact an artificial barrier for students' development and should be lifted.
Moreover, allowing students to shift to the major they are good at means better
exploitation of their potential talent. Every student has his/her own passion and talent.
Universities, as an important education institution, should try their best to help students to
achieve their potential instead of suppressing镇压, 抑制 it. There are numerous
outstanding figures in history that gave up their original major and achieved great success
in the new major. For example, Yang Zhenning would not have won the Nobel Prize if he has
stuck to experimental physics实验物理学.
44
In conclusion, we should provide students an opportunity to take a more decisive role
in choosing their individual destiny. A flexible major policy can produce a win-win situation.

Is A College Degree Necessary In Today's World?
With the rapid increase in the cost of college, many people say that the costs of the
4-year college are not worth the return of the investment, and that many jobs do not
require a college degree. Is a college degree necessary in today's world?
IS A COLLEGE DEGREE NECESSARY IN TODAY'S WORLD?
Because a 4-year college education requires a large commitment of time, effort, and
money, many high school graduates decide not to go to college. They enter the work force
immediately, or decide to go to a vocational职业的 or trade school instead of college. Is a
college degree really necessary these days? Despite the expense and delay in entering the
work force, I strongly believe that a 4-year college education is necessary and desirable in
today's world.
One major reason to go to college is that college provides necessary academic
background for a career. Durng four or more years in college, students have time and
resources to explore many different areas in the humanities人文学科, social sciences,
science, and professional fields such as business and engineering, and to take a variety of
academic courses that will provide important background for particular careers.
A second important argument for the value of college is that people with college
degrees have better job opportunities and higher income level than people who have only
a high school or vocational school education, so college means a better quality of life. Job
46
opportunities and starting salaries are generally excellent for people with college degrees
while the employment outlook may not be so cheerful for those with only a high school
diploma.
Also, college tends to provide a labor force with a certain knowledge and skill, which is
beneficial to the advancement of our society. Students who exercise their minds and
develop strategies to deal with hard problems over four years of college are likely to
graduate with many skills and strategies that can be transferred to dealing with tasks later
in life, both on the job and in their personal life. This will surely contribute to the progress of
the world.
In summary, there are many good arguments in support of the value of a 4-year college
education. All in all, the benefits far outweigh the problems and expense. I firmly believe
that everyone who wants to have a bright future should go to college.
