Reading on Screens: The New Way to Dive into Stories
Hi there! My name is Alex, and I'm a 4th grader at Oakwood
Elementary School. I love to read all kinds of books, from
adventure stories to mysteries to books about science and
history. But these days, I don't just read regular paper books – I
also do a lot of my reading on electronic devices like tablets,
e-readers, and even my mom's smartphone sometimes!
It's really cool how we can access so many books right at our
fingertips thanks to technology. My parents got me a
kid-friendly tablet last year, and I've been using it to read ebooks
from our local library. All I have to do is borrow the ebooks
online, and they get delivered straight to my tablet! No more
waiting for the library to have a physical copy available.
One of the best things about reading on a device is that I can
customize the text to make it perfect for my eyes. If the font is
too small, I can make it bigger with just a pinch of my fingers. If
the background is too bright, I can change it to a softer tone
that's easier on my eyes, especially when I'm reading at night
before bed. Some ebooks even have audio options, so I can
listen to the story being read aloud if I get tired of reading
myself.
Speaking of reading at night, having ebooks on my tablet is
super handy when I'm travelling or going on vacations with my
family. Instead of packing a whole bunch of heavy books in my
suitcase, I can just bring my tablet and have a whole library's
worth of stories right there! It's way more convenient, and I never
have to worry about running out of things to read.
Of course, I still love the feel and smell of a good old paper
book. There's just something special about turning the pages
and getting lost in a physical book. But I've come to really
appreciate the advantages of ebooks and digital reading too.
One of the coolest things is that some ebooks have
interactive features that make the stories come alive even more.
In certain books, I can tap on illustrations to see animated scenes
or hear sound effects. Some non-fiction books even have video
clips that help explain concepts in a really engaging way.
Another big plus of reading on devices is that it's much
easier to look up words I don't know. If I come across an
unfamiliar vocabulary word, I can just hold my finger on it, and
the definition pops up right there on the screen. No more
struggling to figure out meanings from context clues or
constantly interrupting my reading to grab a dictionary!
That reminds me, ebooks also make it super simple to take
notes, highlight important passages, and even share my favorite
quotes on social media or with my classmates. With paper books,
I have to dog-ear the pages or scribble in the margins, but most
reading apps and ebook platforms allow me to make digital
annotations. I can even search within the text for particular
words or phrases I need to find again later.
Despite all these awesome digital reading capabilities, I
know some people worry that kids like me are missing out by not
reading physical books as much. They think we're getting
distracted too easily by games, videos, and other apps on our
devices. And sure, I'll admit – sometimes I do get sidetracked and
have to remind myself to stay focused on my book. But plenty of
my friends still prefer to read paper books, and that's perfectly
fine too!
At the end of the day, what matters most is that we're all
reading, learning new things, exercising our imaginations, and
developing strong literacy skills. Whether you're turning the
pages of a hardcover or swiping across a tablet screen, reading is
reading. And in my opinion, having choices and variety when it
comes to how we experience books and stories is pretty darn
cool.
So while printed books will always have a special place on
my bookshelf, I'm really glad I also get to take advantage of
ebooks and digital reading technologies. From customizing the
text to exploring interactive features to accessing thousands of
titles from anywhere, reading on devices has opened up a whole
new world of possibilities for bookworms like me. Maybe
someday I'll even write and publish my own ebook for other kids
to enjoy! But for now, you can find me curled up with a good
whichever way I feel like escaping
into an amazing literary adventure.
