My Family and Helping at Home

My name is Emma and I'm 9 years old. I live with my mom,

dad, and little brother Jack who is 6. My parents work really hard

to take care of me and Jack. I see how much they do for us every

day and I want to help them as much as I can.

At home, there are lots of little jobs I can do to make things

easier for my parents. In the mornings, I make sure to get myself

dressed, brush my teeth, and pack my backpack for school

without my mom having to remind me. I also help set the table

for breakfast. After school, the first thing I do is put away my

backpack and take off my shoes so they aren't left in the middle

of the floor for someone to trip over.

My biggest job is keeping my room clean and organized. I

make my bed every morning and put away my clothes and toys

when I'm done playing with them. Once a week, I vacuum my

room to pick up any crumbs or dirt. My mom doesn't have to

worry about my messy room adding to her housework. I'm

proud that I can do this job all by myself.

On weekends, I like to help out even more around the house.

On Saturday mornings, I help my dad by taking out the trash and

recycling bins to the curb. I'm getting bigger now so the bins

aren't too heavy for me anymore. My parents don't have to do

that smelly job! I also help my mom by dusting the furniture and

using the hand vac to clean up any messes I see. Keeping the

house clean is a big job, so I'm happy I can take some of those

tasks off her hands.

Another way I help my family is by doing little jobs for my

brother Jack when he needs it. Sometimes he has trouble

reaching things that are up high, so I'll get those down for him.

Other times he gets stuck on part of his homework, so I try to

explain it in a way he understands. When we're playing, I always

share my toys and games with him. A good big sister helps out

her little brother!

My parents are always telling me how proud they are of me

for being so helpful around the house. It makes me feel really

good inside to do nice things for them. They work so hard at

their jobs and taking care of me and Jack. The least I can do is
