RED BANK, New Jersey (January 31, 2020). These days, women go to space. They sail

(

航行

) around the world. They have all kinds of adventures (

冒险

). This wasn’t true hundreds

of years ago. Back then, women were expected to stay home. But that didn’t stop these three

women from taking off and doing big things.

Jeanne Baret (1740—1807): Baret was a French scientist. She studied plants. And she

was the first woman to sail around the world. In 1766, Baret wanted to set sail with a group of

scientists. But they were all men. Women weren’t allowed to travel on French navy ships. So

Baret dressed up like a man. And she sailed away.

Lady Hester Stanhope (1776—1839): Stanhope was from England. She wanted to travel.

She traveled throughout the Middle East by herself. And she led an archaeological (

考古的

dig there.

Nellie Bly (1864—1922): Bly was a reporter. In 1987 she wrote a story about hidden

problems at a hospital. She dressed up like a patient at the hospital. Then she wrote an

alarming six-part report. The story made Bly well-known. It also led the way for other women

reporters. Two years later, Bly set a world record. She traveled around the world in

Learning English can be great fun. Today I learned some expressions (

表达

) about fruit

and vegetables. I’d like to tell you something about them.

First, cucumbers (

黄瓜

) are long and green. People often eat them. If we say a person is

“as cool as a cucumber”, that means he never worries about anything or gets angry. He is

calm at any time.

If two people look exactly the same, we might say they are “two peas in a pod (

豆荚

)”.

Potatoes are popular food in many countries. “Small potatoes” means something or

somebody unimportant. For example, Jim doesn’t want to be “small potatoes”, so he works

hard. Someone might call you “a couch potato” if you sit and watch television all day and get

little or no exercise.

Bananas are a kind of popular fruit. We can say you “go bananas” if you are very angry.

Lovers. B

Teammates. C

Classmates. D

There is a new kind of glasses that permits people considered legally blind to see again.

The company E-Sight created these unusual glasses. They are electronic, and work by

providing the users with huge amounts of visual information.

试卷第4页,共8页

But how do they work? A high-speed, high resolution camera is set in the middle of the

glasses. It gets video images of whatever is before it. The computer in the glasses

immediately processes the video and shows it on two screens in front of the user’s eyes. The

video is improved by the glasses’ technology so that the user is able to see the image.

The glasses also autofocus (

自动聚焦

) extremely quickly between short, medium, and

long distance vision. This permits the user to move easily from reading a book, to watching

TV, to looking out a window.

“The device is almost bombarding (

轰击

) the eyes with so much information to send to

the brain through the eye that it can present them with a picture that is pretty much what you

would see or I would see. It is a true wearable breakthrough for those who are living with

vision loss,” Jeffrey Fenton, the marketing director for E-Sight, said.

The company says the glasses have what it calls “bioptic tilt abilities”. With these

abilities users adjust (

适应

) the device so they have the best video clarity (

清晰度

) along with

steady (

稳定的

) side. Such balance in vision helps users avoid feeling sick. Users are advised

to take time to get used to the glasses. In the beginning, they should wear them just a few

hours at a time while their eyes adjust.

The World Health Organization says about 285 million people are visually impaired,

including 39 million who are blind. Among that group are the sisters of E-Sight founder

Conrad Lewis. Lewis, an engineer, decided to help his sisters see.

The glasses are costly, however, user Julissa Marquez says they are worth the money.

Marquez lost most of her eyesight in 2013 and after more than ten operations she was left

with about thirty percent vision in one eye. Through the glasses, however, she says her vision

is “amazing”.

33

The glasses catch video images with the ________.

A

glasses’ technology B

computer C

screens D

camera

34

The glasses have all these advantages EXCEPT that ________.

A

users do not need to focus by themselves

B

it takes just a few hours to get used to the glasses

C

the pictures presented are as clear as the real things

D

users won’t feel uncomfortable thanks lo bioptic tilt abilities

35

In Julissa Marqucz’s opinion, the glasses are ________.

A

too expensive B

quite difficult to use C
