When you go to the doctor, you like to come away with a prescription
.
It makes you feel better to
know you will get some medicine. But the doctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person
needs is some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo.
A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or ail empty capsule. Even though they have no medicine in them, these
things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen?
The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body can heal itself. It is as if there was
a doctor in each of us. The doctor will heal the body for us if we let it. But it is not yet known just how the placebo works
to heal the body. Some people say it works because the human mind fools itself. These people say that if the mind is
fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did, and the body will feel better.
Placebos do not always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with the relationship between the
patient and the doctor. If the patient has a lot of trust in the doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient,
then the placebo is more likely to work. So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all.
A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expect a bad reaction to medicine, then they will also show a bad
reaction to the placebo. This would seem to show that a lot of how you react to medicine is in your mind rather than in
your body. Some doctors still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think there is
still not enough known about it.
The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is stronger than we think it is. There
are people who say you can heal your body by using your mind. And the interesting thing is that even people who swear
this is not possible have been healed by a placebo
.

The best tool needed for survival in the event you get lost when you travel is your skill of advanced
planning. You must expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. Even if you are going out for just a few hours, pack
enough essentials that you can stay hydrated (
体内水分
), fueled and prepared for any type of weather. Your essentials
should include at least:
• More than enough food and water for the activity you plan.
• A compass that you know how to use. You may want a GPS device, but those sometimes do not receive a signal or
the battery fails. Cell phones also likely will not work because of a lack of signal.
• Appropriate maps. Study the terrain (
地形
) and your planned route. Know where you are going and how you will
return.
• Comfortable hiking boots, clothes that you can wear depending on the weather conditions and additional socks in
case the ones you arc wearing get wet.
• A blanket, flashlight, matches kept in a water-resistant container, and other items that will help you survive
overnight if necessary.
• Cheek with the local forest office for special warnings, such as fires in the area, bear sightings, flooding, trail or
road closures, etc.
It’s also important that once you have planned your outing, tell someone. Give them exact details of where you are
going, the trail you plan to follow, when you will return, the vehicle you are driving (and where you plan to park) and
how many people will go with you—do not go alone.
If you do become lost, your most important tool is keeping a positive mental attitude.

If we look around us at the things we have purchased at some point in our lives, we would no doubt
23.(8分)
notice that not everything we own is being put to good use: the thick woolen coat which we thought looked trendy
despite the fact that we live in a tropical country. the smartphone that got put away when we bought ourselves the
newest model, or even the guest room in our house that somehow got turned into a storeroom.
Those underutilized(
未充分使用的
) items may seem useless to some, but could be of value to others. With the
occurrence of the Internet, online communities have figured out a way to generate profit from the sharing of those
underused property, Using websites and social media groups that facilitate the buying and selling of second-hand goods
it is now easier than ever for peer-to-peer sharing activities to take place. And this is known as the sharing economy.
These popular online platforms are providing a chance for people to make a quick fortune. To give an example,
busy parents previously might not have bothered with setting up a stall at the local market to sell their children’s old
equipment, but with online marketplaces, parents are now able to sell on those hardly worn baby clothes that their
children have outgrown so as to put some cash back into their pockets.
Businesses have also caught on to the profitability of the sharing economy and are seeking to gain from making
use of those underutilized resources. Companies like Airbnb act as a middleman for people to cash in on their unused
rooms and houses and let them out as profitable accommodation. Another example is Uber, which encourages people to
use their own personal cars as taxis to make some extra cash in their free time.
This move towards a sharing economy is not without criticisms. Unlike businesses, unregulated individuals do not
have to follow certain regulations and this can lead to poorer and inconsistent quality of goods and services and a higher
risk of fraud. Nevertheless, in the consumerist society we live in today, the increased opportunities to sell on our
unwanted and underused goods can lead to a lesser impact on our environment.

Spotify can tell if you're sad. Here's why that should scare you. Want to figure out if someone is a
patient with a mental disability: Ask them what their favorite song is. A New York University study last year found that
people who loved Eminem's Lose Yourself and Justin Bieber's
What Do You Mean?
were more likely to have trouble
with mental disabilities than people who were into Dire Straits.
Over the past few years, Spotify has been improving the ability to analyze information to help businessmen target
consumers with advertisements made specially for their needs. They conclude this from the sort of music you're listening
to, combined with where and when you're listening to it, along with third-party data that might be available.
Now, to be clear, there's nothing significantly illegal about what Spotify is doing with your information. I certainly
don't think that they are working with shadowy consulting firms to serve you ads selling a culture struggle while you're
listening to music that suggests you might be in a terrible situation. However, I find it disappointing that our personal,
private moments with music are increasingly being turned into information points and offered to advertisers.
You can see where this could go, can't you? As ad targeting gets ever more accurate, businessmen will have the
ability to target our feelings in potentially improper ways. According to one study, you are more likely to spend more on
a product if you're feeling sad. You can imagine some companies might take advantage of that. And on that note, I'm
feeling a little down about all this. Head off to treat myself to something expensive.
1
、
What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A
.
To introduce a new song.
C
.
To help more patients.
B
.
To draw readers' attention.
D
.
To promote a new medium.
