Lima, the capital of Peru, is located in the central coastal part of the country, overlooking
the Pacific Ocean. With a population of more than 9 million, Lima is one of the largest cities
and the only capital in South America that faces the ocean.
Lima has a long history. The lost Inca civilization, is thought to be a mystery. There are
many museums, where you can learn: How the ancient American Indians founded the Inca
Empire and built Machu Picchu, a famous ancient city in the Andes Mountains; what
happened in 1532 and why over 90% of Peruvians speak Spanish. Visiting the historic center,
a World Heritage Site, you may find you are communicating with both the past and the
present.
Lima is also a place where you can find the lifestyles and fashions, created by its people
and culture. You will see Peruvian clothes, dances, and taste their delicious foods and drinks.
You can see buildings in different styles, enjoy the fantastic sunset over the ancient ruins,
climb the mountains, fly over the ocean, or sit in the restaurants and bars to experience
Peruvians’ relaxing life.
You may have heard “It never rains in Lima.” In fact, the special geographic feature
makes it not as dry as it is said to be and it is warm all year around. Though it seldom rains in
summer, it sometimes drizzles on early winter morning. The drizzle and the wet air “water”
the ground, which makes the crops and the plants grow. Moreover, modern technology helps
to bring water from the snow and ice on the top of the Andes (over 6,000 m high) for the city
to use. People there never waste water.
Lima is such an amazing city that it is worth a visit.

One day, Lindsay and Erica were at Lindsay’s house working on a science project about
the weather.
Lindsay was a hard worker like Erica, so the two girls were happy to be partners. They
were now writing about rain and were amazed to learn how much rain their town gets every
year.

Pet owners know very well that animals can communicate with humans and with each
other, but scientists still find it difficult to explain how this happens.
Animals communicate through sounds, smells, movements and touch. 18 For
example, these senses can tell a member of their group about food, or warn them of danger, or
even just to play.
No one has ever proved that animals can really talk. 19 He learned to say
many English words, such as “I love you”, which he said to his trainer every night. Other
birds can use different noises or songs when they are in danger or want to make friends, but
they cannot make human sounds.
We also know that animals produce different smells in order to communicate
information to each other. Dogs are well-known for having a good sense of smell. 20
They also get to know other dogs by smelling them first before they become friends!
Scientists have known for some time that when a bee has found a place with a lot of food,
it goes back to its home and performs a kind of dance. This shows the others exactly where to
go. They don’t need the bee to actually take them there.
Finally, a lot of animals use different parts of their body to communicate like humans.
21 Elephants will do something similar as they join their trunks (
象鼻
) to
show friendship.
A
.
That’ s why they make good pets.
B

C

D
