二、阅读单选
“Internet addiction (
瘾
)” was once used to describe young people who spent too much
time watching videos or playing games online. But today, an increasing number of the old are
becoming victims(
受害者
).
According to a report on the Internet use of China’s elderly people last year, 38.6% of
people aged 60 or over were Internet users. And some surveyed(
接受调查的
) elderly people
spent at least 10 hours on the Internet every day.
Phone overuse could lead to the higher risk of many diseases like cervical spondylosis
(
颈椎病
). Besides health problems, elderly people’s phone addiction also brings family
problems. For example, their adult children often get upset when they stay up late playing
with the phone or shop online blindly.
Why do old people depend heavily on mobile phones? It’s because they have lots of
spare time and they wish to communicate with others.
Though it’s natural for the elderly to meet their spiritual (
精神上的
) needs through the
smart phone, they should limit their time on the Internet and get regular rest at night. Adult
children should go home more often to talk with their parents and reduce their sense of
loneliness and encourage them to do healthy activities.
11
.
What can we learn from the report?
A
.
An increasing number of the young played games online.
B
.
People aged 60 or over were easy to catch diseases.
C
.

D

① Limit their own time on the Internet.
① Spend more time with their parents.
① Introduce their elderly parents to healthy activities.
① Teach their elderly parents to use the smart phone.
A
.
①① B
.
①① C

It was a hot sunny summer day. A tired man was walking through a desert. He lost his
way and had no more water with him. He felt helpless and thought he would certainly die if
he could not meet his thirst (
口渴
).
Suddenly, he saw a small house not far away. He could not believe his eyes but he
decided to walk closer to have a look.
The small house was abandoned (
废弃的
), but had a hand pump (
泵
) inside. “What a
blessing!” the man thought. However his over-excitement soon came down when he saw no
water coming out of it. As he was about to leave, he noticed a bottle of water in the corner of
the room. And there was a piece of paper under that bottle. It said, “Use the water to start the
pump. Don’t forget to fill this bottle.”
What should he do now? He stopped and thought for a moment. He could simply drink
that bottle of water and save his life immediately. But, in that case (
既然那样
), he would not
be able to carry along any water on his way ahead. Also, no one else would turn up there to
get a drop to save his life. But if he chose to follow the instruction of the paper and that didn’t
work, he would simply die.
In any case, he had to take a risk—sooner or later. He closed his eyes and picked the
second choice finally. To his great pleasure, cool clear water came out of the pump in a
glug-glug noise. He drank it like a thirsty cow, refilled (
再装满
) the bottle and put it back in
the corner. Moreover, he added some words on the paper, “Believe me; it works.”
He also refilled his own water bottles, rested for half an hour, and started his journey
once again with a smile on his face.

Cheetahs, the world’s fastest animals on land, died out in India over 70 years ago.
____18____
Long ago, Asian cheetahs used to roam (

) across India. But by 1952, they were
considered extinct (

). One of the main reasons was that much of their natural land was
taken over by humans. ____19____
Since 1952, there have been efforts to return cheetahs to India. Recently, that finally
happened. Eight cheetahs were set free in Kuno National Park, India, which was set up in

The cheetahs were a gift from the government of another country. The cheetahs were
chosen because they were used to being near humans. The cheetahs that were released(

aren’t Asian cheetahs, but African cheetahs. There may be as few as 12 Asian cheetahs still
living in the wild, and they live in Iran.
____20____ Now, there are only about 8,000 left. Some scientists believe that getting
cheetahs going in India again will help make sure that cheetahs don’t die out completely.
To make sure that they are all healthy, the eight cheetahs will spend some time in an
enclosed area. ____21____ They will be able to roam into nearby forests.
