Brandy was an old dog. When her owner died, the dog stayed near the house and waited for

her owner to return. Some of the neighbors left food out for Brandy. But while they thought the

dog was friendly, they weren’t much worried about Brandy.

One day, Brandy walked into my yard and began playing with my 18-month-old Adam. I

didn’t like the dirty dog at first. But seeing my son having fun playing with her, I decided to let

Brandy stay.

One afternoon, I left Adam in the yard to play while I had to answer an important phone.

When I returned, he was gone. I was scared and called the police. We looked for Adam for six

hours, but were unsuccessful.

Then someone said he had heard barking coming from the woods. So we all rushed to the

woods. Adam was fast asleep against a tree. Brandy was keeping Adam there while one of her own

legs dangled over(悬垂) a deep hole.

Brandy had followed Adam when he walked away. Seeing him in danger, she’d held him

safely for all those hours.

I was so thankful for what Brandy did and let Brandy spent the rest of her days with us. In

Brandy’s honor, I founded Pets Alive, a pet rescue center in New York. I can’t save every animal,

but I know if someone had put that old dog to sleep, I could have easily lost my only son.

26. What did Brandy do after her owner died?

A. She looked for food everywhere. B. She waited for her owner to return.

C. She was sad and cried all day long. D. She walked around in the community.

A. Adam set up Pets Alive to save more animals.

B. Brandy kept Adam safe from falling into the deep hole.

28. Where can you probably read the story?

A. In a nature magazine. B. On a pet website.

In order to lose weight, it is necessary to understand the importance of calories and how to

calculate(计算) the amount of calories required for your body to lose weight. In weight loss, your

diet plays 80% role for achieving the ideal results.

Most people take part in different weight loss programs with the hope of losing weight.

However, have you ever stopped to ask yourself what helps people to lose weight? The simple

answer is “calories you take in VS the calories you expend.” In order to calculate and burn the

calories to lose weight, you need to understand what calories are.

_____________, calories are treated as the unit of energy that is got

from food and drink. Your body cells need the calories to live properly and

that is why you need to make sure that you meet your daily calorie intake.

What you need to understand is that any food item that contains calories

has the possibility to increase your energy intake. Now, people who don’t understand the

importance of calories in the body, end up gaining or losing too much weight.

To be able to understand the dynamics(动态) of weight loss and weight gain, you need to

understand what the calories are and what their role is in the body.

Calories as mentioned above are units of energy. They are the ones that provide the body with

energy. However, the calories intake are directly linked to the energy outlet. This means that for

you to be able to lose weight, the energy outlet needs to be higher than the calories intake. To gain

weight, you need to keep a higher energy intake than the energy outlet. The opposite is true if you

want to lose weight, you must burn more calories than those you take in.

If a polar bear tells you to talk to the hand, don’t be surprised. The animals seem to

communicate with each other through scent trails(气味痕迹) left by their paws. As they walk

across the snowy Arctic, polar bears are usually alone. In the past, people noticed that polar bears

sometimes smelled the footprints of other bears. Could there be chemical information hidden in

their tracks?

Researchers gathered scent samples from the feet of 203 wild polar bears. All of the samples

were taken in spring, when polar bears produce young. To get each bear’s scent, researchers

rubbed a cotton cloth between its toes. Then they went to zoos and tested

28 zoo polar bears to see how they responded to the foot scents of strange

bears. In case(以防) the toe clothes from the wild bears carried any

disease, the researchers spread each scent sample onto a piece of

cardboard and put it inside a little wooden box. The bears could smell and

approach the boxes, but they couldn’t touch the samples directly.

In general, bears were more interested in foot scents from the opposite sex(性别). They were

more likely to approach the scent boxes in spring than in fall.

Judging by the zoo bears’ special interest in scents from the opposite sex, it seems that polar

bears use foot smells to track down potential(潜在的) mates. By following a set of attractive

footprints, a lonely polar bear can find itself a partner and make more polar bears. But this will

only work as long as the sea ice that bears walk across is unbroken. The more it melts, the more

bears’ trails will be incomplete. As a result, they will have no one’s feet to smell but their own.

37. What’s the right order of the steps that researchers follow to study the communication between

polar bears?

a. Rub a cotton cloth between each bear’s toes.

b. Go to zoos and test 28 zoo polar bears to see how they respond.

c. Write down the zoo bears’ responses and find out the reason accordingly.

d. Spread each scent sample onto a piece of cardboard and put it inside a box.

A. a→d→c→b B. a→d→b→c C. d→a→c→b D. d→a→b→c

38. Why were the pieces of cardboard with scent samples placed in the boxes?
