The Chinese Writing System: Connecting the Past and the Present

Lead in:

T: If you have a chance to introduce what China is famous for to foreigners, what will you think of

immediately?

S:

T: The Great Wall; the Analects of Confucius (论语);the four great inventions; so

many things we can share with the foreigners because China enjoys a profound history of more

than 5000 years. As Chinese,we are so proud its ancient civilization!

T: What makes it possible for generations by generations to appreciate Chinese ancient

civilization?

S:

T: The Chinese characters are the carriers of our culture. So the Chinese writing system is very

important. Today, we are going to learn a passsage about the it. Please turn to page 62, .....(标题)

Skimming:

T: It is evident that there are 6 para in the passage, everybody read the passage quickly within

3mins, find out which paras describes the development of Chinese writing system and how many

important times are mentioned? Are you ready?

S:

T: para24 is about the development. How many important times are. Mentioned?

S:

T: Yeah, 5 important times. What are they?

S: at the beginning; the Shang. Dynasty; over the years; the Qin Dynasty; Today.

T: Nice work!

Scanning:

T: please read para24 carefully, write down what happened to the Chinese writing system at each

important times? Clear? Here we go.

T: time is up. Any volunteer? James, would you like to share?

S:

T: 1. At the beginning: a picturebased language. 2. Shang Dynasty: welldeveloped writing system.

3. Over the years: different forms/various of dialects and characters. 4. Qing Dynasty: a unified

system. 5. Today: municating tool (板书 时间线)

T: From the timeline, we can know the Chinese writing system witnessed the developmet of

China. It functions like the bridge, connects the past and the present, making it possible for us to

know what happened in ancient time. From the text, what influence of the Chinese writing

system are described ?

S:

T: 1. Connect China’s past and present, through classic works written by Chinese; 2. Making

Chinese characters develope into an art, calligraphy; 3. More and more foreigners know about

China through written Chinese. (板书 the pastthe present; characterart; Chinathe world)

Futher thinking:

T: As student, what should we do to give the Chinese writing a bright future and better

development.?

S:

T:appreciate the beauty of written Chinese; hold some activities to promote Chinese characters;

offer the writing courses; cultivate a sene of ; tell the story about Chinese writing

T: Although we enjoy the convenience of typing system, we should not abandon our great writng

system, it is our responsibility to promote and to pass it down.

Make a poster about Chinese writing, introducing its development, its functions and measures to

promote it.
