After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park.
Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone
wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves. Gray wolves once were seen here and there
in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually
displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the
Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer
humans around. The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk
populations—major food sources(来源)for the wolf—grew rapidly. These animals consumed large
amounts of vegetation(植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves,
coyote populations also grew coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes,
and completely drove away the park’s beavers.
As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to
Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems.
Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or
pets. The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The
U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitor and manage the wolf packs in Yellowstone.
Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and
coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The
Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to
reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.

Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just
made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to
itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to“overhear”the cry. So information was exchanged,
but it wasn’t a true, intentional back and forth. Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a
world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的)than the world we can see and hear. Our
senses are weak. There’s a whole lot going on.
◆What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The world is changing faster than ever. B. People have stronger senses than before.
world is more complex than it seems. D. People in Darwin’s time were more imaginative.

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in
Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival
is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful. A nervous night to be sure, but
sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had
responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active.
And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all—LUNCH! The parents had done
their duty and would probably continue to do so.
◆How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?

(2016·浙江高考·C片段)
Viewing childhood development as a scientific investigation throws light on how children
learn, but it also offers an inspiring look at science and do young children and
scientists seem to be so much alike? Psychologists have suggested that science as an effort—the
desire to explore, explain, and understand our world—is simply something that comes from our
babyhood. Perhaps evolution(进化)provided human babies with curiosity and a natural drive to
explain their worlds, and adult scientists simply make use of the same drive that served them as
children. The same cognitive(认知的)systems that make en feel good about figuring
something out may have been adopted by adult scientists. As some psychologists put it, “It is not
that children are little scientists but that scientists are big children.”
◆What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The world may be more clearly explained through children’s play.
B. Studying babies’ play may lead to a better understanding of science.
C. Children may have greater ability to figure out things than scientists.
D. One’s drive for scientific research may become stronger as he grows.

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile
laboratory named“Drive LAB”in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to
discover where the key stress points are. Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key
reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more
isolated(隔绝)and inactive. Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing
in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into
later life. “For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone
else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and
so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the
benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that. “We hope that our work
will help with technological solutions(解决方案)to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the

Researchers have discovered that” night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has
been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul,
South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both
during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of
melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime,
according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food. Night milk quickened the start
of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to

Measles(麻疹), which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly
wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗). But
the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and
misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been
reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but
they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they
still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called“herd immunity”, which
protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical
reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. But
herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins some refuse vaccination and
seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger. That’s exactly
what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County, California,
where 22 measles cases were reported this month, to Brooklyn, N. Y. , where a 17-year-old caused
an outbreak last year. The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a
real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer. Making
things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加)of what are supposed to
be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get
an exemption(豁免), sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a
, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out.
But no one does enough to limit exemptions. Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited
medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough. Everyone enjoys the
life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks.
◆What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the idea of exemption. B. To discuss methods to cure measles.
C. To stress the importance of vaccination. D. To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.

the way we tie them. Instead, the new shoes have small motors that control their laces. When
you step in them, your feet will hit a sensor(传感器)in the shoes and the motor will automatically
tighten the laces. But the shoes weren’t just designed for lazy people’s needs. They could actually
give athletes an advantage during competition. They are also useful for people who cannot move

At a click of mouse consumers can purchase the goods and service they need at online shops.
What they have to do is waiting for the goods sent to their homes. We shall all be grateful to the
pioneers of online shopping for bringing us such convenience.
Michael Aldrich(the UK)
Online shopping was invented and pioneered by Michael Aldrich in the UK. In 1979 he
connected a television via a telephone line to a real-time multi-user transaction(交易)processing
computer. He sold mainly Business-to-Business systems. There were a number of significant
world firsts with new applications in several business fields.
Jeff Bezos(the USA)
Jeff Bezos defined online shopping and rewrote the rules of commerce. Tim Berners-Lee
invented the World Wide Web server and browser(浏览器)in 1990. In 1994, Jeff Bezos read an
article about how the World Wide Web was growing by 2, 300 percent a year. He knew he had to
tap into such a great potential for commerce. On July 6, 1995, Bezos launched Amazon. com,
which operated out of the garage of his two-bedroom home in suburban Seattle, Washington.
With almost no publicity, sales took off immediately. The company has now expanded into
dozens of product categories, forcing the world’s biggest retailer(零售商)to rethink their business
models, and finally changing the way people shop.
Jack Ma(China)
As a child, Jack Ma was bad at maths but fascinated by English. He travelled to the United
States in 1995 as a translator to help a Chinese firm recover payment. The attempt failed. But a
friend in Seattle showed Ma the Internet, and an idea began brewing.
In 1999, Mr Ma gathered 17 friends and founded Alibaba in his apartment in Hangzhou.
21 Alibaba’s model was simple: allow small and medium-sized Chinese companies to find global
buyers they would otherwise only be able to meet at trade works brilliantly. Alibaba’s
sales are now more than those of eBay and Amazon combined.

主旨大意题 (2017·全国卷Ⅱ·C)
Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the
company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle—named the
Transition—has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The
Transition, which flew at 1, 400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per
hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per
hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon. Around 100 people have already put
down a $10, 000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely
rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto
Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279, 000. And
it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway. Inventors have been trying to
make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann
thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government
has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly.
The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety
said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five
years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those
for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20
hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy
to meet.
Step 2 Answering questions
1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The basic data of the Transition. B. The advantages of flying cars.
C. The potential market for flying cars. D. The designers of the Transition.
2. Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?
A. It causes traffic jams. B. It is difficult to operate.
23
批注 C. It is very expensive. D. It burns too much fuel.
is the government’s attitude to the development of the flying car?
A. Cautious. B. Favorable.
C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.
is the best title for the text?
A. Flying Car at Auto Show B. The Transition’s First Flight
C. Pilots’ Dream Coming True D. Flying Car Closer to Reality

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film—it
wanted somebody as well known as Paul—he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people
would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later
had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of
theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digging into the characters
we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors:
humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying affection.
Those were also at the core(核心)of our relationship off the screen. We shared the belief that if
you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance
and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that
brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events. I last saw
him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal
was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
Step 2 Answering questions
25 1. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?
A. Paul Newman wanted it. B. The studio powers didn’t like his agent.
C. He wasn’t famous enough. D. The director recommended someone else.
2. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?
A. They were of the same age. B. They worked in the same theater.
C. They were both good actors. D. They had similar characteristics.
3. What does the underlined word“that”in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Their belief. B. Their care for children.
C. Their success. D. Their support for each other.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show his love of films. B. To remember a friend.
C. To introduce a new movie. D. To share his acting experience.

I’ve got two ice packs and that’s how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are

Article 2: (2017·全国卷Ⅰ·D)
A build-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器)is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas
where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U. S. Department of
Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary
equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components
required, though, are a 5'×5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a
container—perhaps just a drinking cup—to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat
little pack and fastened on your belt. To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a
hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water
catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place
so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up—and out—the side of
the hole.

体裁 议论文 话题 冲突 词数 351
(2017·衡水中学三模)We can have conflicts with our important persons like friends, relatives,
workmates, etc. But the conflict doesn’t necessarily mean that the relationship will be destroyed.
In fact, sometimes conflict helps people to let out their silent feelings, allowing them to free their
suppressed emotions. However, when in a conflict, we usually get angry and say or do things
which aren’t linked to the problem at hand. Therefore, it is important that we should try to avoid
conflicts through effective communication.
In a heated argument, we usually say things that aren’t related to the real problem, and even use
rude words to make sure we gain an advantage over the other person. Then the whole situation
goes badly. So we should separate(隔离)the root cause of the problem and build our discussion
around it. This ensures that there are no rude remarks and the situation moves in a positive
direction.
It’s easy for us to think we’re right and if something isn’t working out, it surely must be
someone else’s fault. However, if you aim to solve a conflict, first of all, you should show some
respect and allow the other party to express themselves. Using remarks like, “I understand your
concern on this”or“I know you’re right at your end”, would make the other person feel more
appreciated.
Sometimes some people get too excited and may behave in the wrong way or say something
others may not appreciate. This can cause a worse situation. Actually, they should control their
emotions and keep calm. This has to be learned through self-control and observing behavior of
other people.
The tips mentioned above are useful for most situations. However, we don’t rule out the
possibility that there are some people who always want to create some sort of trouble for others.
You can tell them from others, and putting in an effort to resolve a conflict with them may just not
be a wise idea. The best way to deal with these people is to forget them. A famous saying can
help you and that is: “You should never fight with a pig; you both get dirty and only the pig likes
31 it.”
【文章大意】本文主要谈论的是如何通过有效的交流来避免人与人之间的冲突。

体裁 夹叙夹议文 话题 贫穷 词数 306
(2017·广元二模) The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We
meet them every day. A few days ago, my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and
the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply
listening to the engine. I was amazed. The sad truth is, great talent is not enough.
I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than
5 percent of Americans earn more than $100, 000 a year. A business consultant who specializes
in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was
this business consultant who gave me the phrase, “They are one skill away from great wealth. ”
There is an old saying that goes, “Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’. ”And unfortunately, I would
say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial
intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means”. They work and they pay the
bills. Instead I recommend young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what
they will earn.
32 When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than
McDonald’s? ”, almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask, “So if most of you can cook
a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you? ”The answer is obvious:
McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor
is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business
systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at
building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
【文章大意】本文主要谈论的是为什么有那么多有才能的人贫穷。
5. The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that________.
A. he has a sharp sense of hearing
B. he is ready to help others
C. he is just one of the talented people
D. he knows little about car repairing
【解析】选C。推理判断题。根据第一段首句The world is filled with smart, talented, educated
and gifted people. 可知, 作者提到这位技工是为了表明他是作者遇到的有才能的人之一。
6. The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by“________”.
A. spend more than they can afford B. do in their own way
C. live in their own circle D. live within what they earn
【解析】选D。词义猜测题。根据前面的Job means‘just over broke’“工作意味着仅比破产强一点”, 再结合后面的They work and they pay the bills. 可知, 画线部分的意思是“用自己赚的钱维持生活”。
7. Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?
A. They lack financial intelligence.
B. They don’t work hard enough.
C. They don’t make full use of their talents.
D. They have no specialized skills.
【解析】选A。推理判断题。根据最后一段中的The reason why so many talented people are poor
is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business
systems. 可知, 有才能的人很穷的原因是他们对商业体系知之甚少, 也就是他们缺乏经济头脑。
8. The main purpose of the author is to tell us________.
A. how young people can find a satisfactory job
B. what schools should teach students
C. how McDonald’s makes much money
D. why so many talented people are poor
【解析】选D。推理判断题。通读整篇文章, 根据第一段中的The sad truth is, great talent is not
enough. 以及最后一段的内容可知, 作者的写作意图是告诉我们为什么那么多有才能的人会很穷。

“Don’t be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer
one it makes you much stronger. If you do little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of
themselves, ”said Dale Carnegie.
Sometimes, doing your best work or trying your hardest at something is difficult. It may have
something to do with trying to do something new for the first time, like a new sport or activity at
33 school. It may have something to do with doing homework for a subject that is not your favorite
or is not your best.
As Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Anything worth doing is worth doing right. ”And as
Albert Einstein added, “We have to do the best we can. This is our sacred human
responsibility. ”
Developing the habit of trying your hardest and doing your best is something that will help you
succeed throughout your life. If you have looked at some quotes related to trying your hardest,
you will see that many of them come from people who have made a big difference in the world.
This is not a coincidence. It was not only their cleverness that helped them stand out and change
the world, but their ability to try their hardest and do their best in whatever they were doing. If
you can develop this same habit—to do your best in any situation, it will be a great benefit to your
family, career, school and community.
As Bob Cousy put it, “Do your best when no one is looking. If you do that, then you can be
successful at anything you put your mind to. ”The choice is yours.

【解析】选C。推理判断题。根据第二段中的It may have something to do with trying to do

subject that is not your favorite or is not your best. 可知, 当你发现很难尽最大努力时, 通常是第一次做某件事, 或者是做你不喜欢的家庭作业时。由此可推断出, C项“做你感到厌烦的事情时”为正确答案。
3. Why does the author suggest we develop the habit of trying our hardest?
